Like you I’ve been a fan all my life. I still listen to all those albums. Wembley 81 was my all time fav gig. I grew up around London Airport West London so he always seemed to be a prominent figure of conversation. His GN4 number plate on his Ferrari. Sadly he was not always portrayed well or liked. And yet he’s always been a really decent person. I met his parents too. Both lovely. I’ve only met him once in person to shake hands. And that was outside Currys electrical Eastbourne by accident. He was exiting with Gemma and the girls. I never was one who needed to meet him. I knew he was shy and I probably felt awkward too. And of course I enjoyed the gigs and his work. Still do very much. Glad you met the way you did. Sounds like a real natural connection. What’s lovely now he finally receives all the recognition he rightly deserves. In my view he got the worst end of vile journalism back then. Which to this day I never really understood. Thanks for your post.
Lovely story. Gary was my first idol as well. I have so much respect for him given all the ups and downs, really like his current music and he is brilliant live.
That’s a great story thank you……
Awesome story man!
I met Gary quite a few times at various of his gigs and there was one time in 2019 when I was actually able to have a proper conversation with him, I spoke to him about me covering some of his songs on my iPad through the GarageBand app. I would effectively reconstruct the song from top to bottom to the best of my ability, and I showed him some of them and he was genuinely very impressed! I showed him how to replace the Vox Humana Minimoog sound that he’s of course famous for and he said to me that Persia had recently got an iPad of her own so he was gonna steal it and use that to help him write when not in the studio when an idea comes up.
As a fellow musician who has idolised Numan from birth pretty much, to think that I’ve been able to help and influence him with his music is amazing to me!
Glad you finally got to meet him! Such a pioneer. I met him once at a NIN concert and he was just such a lovely dude. Probably the nicest famous person I've ever met actually! Looking forward to seeing you with Siouxsie in London.
Thx Nick, yes it was a blast! Yeah man, see you in London!! x
Bravo , thanks for sharing
No problem my man, was a fun story to share.
Met him in Liverpool! Airport he flew a ww11 plane that was 84 he invited us on well manners man Also ask me were I got my jacket from
Met him a number of years ago when I was doing sound at the O2 Academy Bristol. Wonderful guy, got to hang out with him for most of a day. After the gig (about midnight), my motorbike broke down (waiting for RAC), he was outside the tour bus and waved me over to hang out with him and the crew, had a beer etc. Eventually they left at 2am. (RAC didn't arrive until 4:30am!). A lovely memory of a great guy.
Wow, that's awesome! Gary really is a lovely guy x
I remember well, went to most his English gigs during 80s, think I must b few yrs older than you. He stayed at the Imperial hotel where I bumped into him... litarely
I ve his original vinyl albums n singles, still spin well.
Brilliant stuff! Lucky you, bless ya ! I've loved Gary since the first top of pops appearance,,though,Wow ! This is different.!Love his SAVAGE concert,on UA-cam at the intimate setting of Brixham Academy.👊👊👊🖤
That was a fantastic story, and yes I was blown away by the super image he had in the I die you die video, love the red in the hair totally original look, and in the last few days I got a cd copy of photograph best of,was looking for it since 1981 payed a lot of money for it but it’s worth it and it’s mint condition happy days
Such a cool story. I met Gary after a gig in Manchester back in 1993. We found out which hotel they were staying in and went back to the after gig meet up. Only spent a few minutes in his company but he came across as a very humble down to earth guy. I wasn't really into music until I heard Cars. Something just clicked, and that was that. Been a fan ever since. I am tempted to do a meet and greet at the next tour. Would like to meet him again, and thank him. It may sound a bit mad, but he's been a massive part of my life.
I remember I met Gary with a friend who asked for his autograph, Gary said to him "do you have a pen?" and my mate said "err no" lol
Love this story
Nice one Rob.
Thanks for sharing.
Great story mate 👍
I'd subscribed to your channel yesterday, had watched three videos on it - and only _now_ do I find out you're Siouxsie's drummer! 😅
Anyway, I'm very pleased for you having met your very first idol! 😊 Exactly - No photos necessary while this wonderful moment will be stored in your memory forever! 😉
And I've been very much enjoying your content so far
😀👍
In regards to Cedric Sharpley: Did he also play on Visage's song 'Mind Of A Toy'? I noticed that the snare drum on Numan's 'M.E.' sounds quite similar 😀
Greetings from New Zealand!
👋😊
Great story. Is that a model Dalek in the background next to the drums?
Yes indeed, I have a few sci-fi, Batman and 60's/70's show memorabilia lying around 🙂
I from the Netherlands and Gary Numan wasn’t a big thing here, sadly. I’m glad UA-cam presents videos like yours to meet equal persons that have the same musical taste. Loved your story. By the way. Didn’t Gary’s Drummer quit? There is an opportunity for you there?
fantastic, what a great vid,
Fantastic story, thanks for sharing

👍🏻. Where did you get those specs?
Nice😮😮😮😮❤
Fabulous!!! I recall you telling us about his influence on the young Rob during the interview we did back in the Covid times. So happy for you
Indeed I did, I loved that interview! Maybe you should share the link here?
What a story. Like you, I've been atound since the John Peel show when he played DiTP. You dead right about not having a picture, its all in your Numan memory bank.
The times I've met him, I've become tongue tied and nervous. The only only artists I get nervous when I met them is Tim Dry and Shaun Crawford from Shock.
