If you are a rec player, a casual player, or even just an average avid player that has no plans to ever play professionally, the best advice I could give you is: don't play online. Just play in live card rooms and casinos. Online sites are 80% grinders who crunch hud stats. Unless this is you, you don't really stand a chance online in the long run. The action in live rooms is much, much softer on average, and if you have a solid understanding of the game fundamentals you can easily table select to get the best situation for your session. Yes, on average playing live will cost you a higher initial investment due to the higher stakes (1/2 NL with a $300 buyin vs. online $0.50/$1 for $100 buyin), but it will be worth it.
Love the idea of a fish tax, great point. I'd like to get to a point where I don't have to just stop playing for a while after being subjected to a bad beat like this. If I stick around I always end up playing way too loose
Your one of the few instructors who seems to understand that bad beats happen. Sometimes poor play gets rewarded for the rec player. It sucks but a reality especially in low stakes.
Dear Nathan, Love your site and your UA-cams. When I am on a poker binge , I let my hair get all straggly and greasy. I wear a fishermans cap with ties and hooks in it and old raggity clothes, I am grey man.(wifey hates it) I let my chips get all messy and tumbled together and never seem to know what I am doing. I look at my cards constantly like I cant remember what I have, At showdown I flip my cards over and go did I win. My jumbled chips are frequently in many piles no one has yet figured out I use them to keep track of how often the other players see the flop (lowest value chip) the turn (next up value chip) and the river (next chip up). a mixed pile or 2 or 3 is how many hands have been dealt, I use the chip counts and displayed hands at showdowns to estimate the range of each player. I am a previous blackjack card counter that is a persona non grata at local gambling establishments. I embrace the deep complexity of poker and learning the things you learned 20 years ago, I have been to your sites and take detailed notes of all the knowledge you give for free on your youtubes. You'd be raising pre to fold out bad low suited connectors so why not bet and get called my missed Broadway's or AxKxQxJx combos.. don't need to be praying for AA to improve. Bet and get coolered if you lose to a 4, but they'll likely be raising you to let you know they have trips or better.
Folding low suit conectors facing a MP raise is too nitty. A well constructed BB calling range includes: 54s, 65s, 64s, 44, 66, 55, A4s, 87s. Against the BB flop calling range AA has no incentive to bet. So you should check the flop a high frequency (60%). If you bet the flop (sometimes) and get called you should check back the turn when the 5 comes almost always. The only hands that are behind your AA on that turn are 77, 88, 99.
I normally choose online tables by the highest average pot. To find weaker opponents, would I be better choosing rooms with a higher percentage of players seeing the flop? Thanks Great channel BTW 👍😃

If you didn't, you could never describe that situation. Yes, it's happened to me also. Now, I cheerfully say Wow, I never expected that, nice hand. My number one thing in Holdem is PATIENCE.
Like calling all in on the turn with no pair and only an inside straight draw, for 1/3 pot bet size of $650 (both had $650 left), and hitting the one card on the River 😂😭 beating your two pair. Yup, bad beats can be tough to swallow but that’s what separates the winners from the losers
I’ve watched most your videos and decided to play real money poker online. I’ve played for years in local garages and have done well with “friendly money”. So I logged into Ignition Poker and deposited $50. I was dealt 67 hands. 7 of those were playable (top 20% of hands). 2 were pocket Kings while 1 was pocket Queens. I followed your advice and raised pre flop. Each time I got one caller. Each time I lost on the River. I led out on all 3 Streets with 1/3 pot bet. Lost to 7/8 off, jack/7 off and Ace/8 off. The fish called all the way through, like you state, but the VARIANCE was entirely one sided here. When you state variance works itself out in the long run you forgot to mention people like me take the beatings while others “make the odds equal out”. It is very upsetting when my equity is constantly in the 84% range, but my win rate is less than 20%. Constantly making the right call (strictly based on % at the time of the All-in call) and constantly losing is making poker painful to play.
Definitely not..AKsuited only against bad players who love to play polarized ranges or junk. Any strong linear range player types will take that gamble often. Even 44 vs AK is bad to be shoving 100% because you are going to miss the board 2/3 times. If you've seen them shove AToff or Ax combos then those are the fish to target but maybe 50% or less shoving preflop when you can flat and see if you connect on the flop.

I can tell that I have seen these suicide moves many times not only from regs. AA is not a reason to torch your money. Some people would have nothing and some would have that straight. The first thing you need to do is to watch the opponent. Otherwise in a long term you might be winning in general but you will keep losing to the 'lucky fish' every single time. Poker is not about the math only in a long run. It's a lot about psychology. Pro players don't watch such videos, the beginners do. And they are mostly playing small stakes, where they would leave all their money trying to make a distance of a million hands - because of these 'lucky fishes'
I don't know if only 2% know this, but it is actually pretty rare that someone gets value in all spots where it is available, so it may be that only 2% read hands well enough to do it.

Most of the rest of us are too conservative at times (or alternatively self-own too often).I don't expect to turn into Garrett Adelstein by watching a UA-cam video.
Most online poker players that are on the leaderboard are hammers. All they do is pound. That is why Doug Polk plays great online and very mediocre in a live game.
#3... give that fish a compliment!!!! Do NOT berate them. You want them to be playing those hands. Say "nice hand". Do everything you can to encourage that fish to believe they outplayed you. Give them room so they can brag to their friends they cracked your aces with 7-2 off (they like embellish their story a little too!)
Well said. Anytime I see a player berating a fish for bad play. I make a note. As I know they are intermediate at best. I will play any suited connecters against their raise or 3 bet, as they've proven they can't lay down top pair.

I watched this streamer win like 10k in tournaments playing garbage, overbetting with bluffs and getting lucky here and there..didn't know anything about preflop selection. How are these people making money in cash/tourn games? Yet with discipline, study and focus, I can't be winning for two months now? Makes no sense.
I flopped an ace high flush vs AJoff in a deep tournament and you'll never guess what happened..they shove AJ top pair and turn two pair then rivered a fullhouse lol XD what a beat
2 months is absolutely nothing in sample size. Keep playing, keep studying. Take poker courses. Studying with limited knowledge can only do so much for you. Maybe a new book.
Yeah some of the streamers aren’t the best but you still see them make cashes. I know it can feel demoralizing to watch that while your working hard and not doing well but keep your head up and just keep making good decisions. This isn’t about the bad streamer it’s about you
just take a week off and let the theory in your head (if you studied some, of course) to cool off and get self-organised. After a break you won't recognise yourself
personaly I think you should not raise the flop vs TAG by raising you tell them you have a strong hand and they will fold almost always and its hard for them to have a pocket pair like you said if you check they will most likely C bet and that is the way you get most value not by raising and making them fold I was making that mistake for a long time but now Im much better and I win a lot more. I dont want to you to be offended by this its just my opinion.
i highly disagree with the sentiment that no one will bluff after you three barrel on the river in the first example. the second player, at no point, has reason to think you have a ten in your hand. meanwhile he could easily represent a 10 that was calling and letting the first player dig his own grave. representing a 10 and raising the river with a big bet is not a crazy move. a lot of people would do it.

My luck on the first example is that they had pocket TT to make a quad… at at least one T for a set.
Betting AA on the turn on 4456 board is a mistake. Check behind and bluffcatch or pray for a 4 or A on the river.

1-3 online is not for beginner's. Live yes, online no. Drop down to the lowest stake. Learn how to beat it, then move up.

If you keep playing well it’ll even out. Over thousands of hands, not 67 hands.

Hey Mario, yes, Preflop you should always call an all-in with pocket aces. Postflop, "it depends" as you will often hear in poker :)
