- This is a review of a 1993 MRE Pork Chow Mein Menu#9. I wanted to take a look at this one because I thought if one would go bad it would be the pork. BTW 1993 was an awesome year for MREs. Watch the video to hear why I think this.

This was a near perfect menu lineup for long term storage. The first items that would spoil are the chow mein noodles & main. And followed by that cherry drink caking. So yours was well stored gem. And of a menu that unfortunately has not been around for some time. Your description of the main course was 100% on point. The mushroom is barely there.. thankfully. Water chesnuts add crunch, but the noodles add more and it takes it texture wise to a whole new level.
I agree, they need to bring FD fruit back.

But I try to to smell the urinal cakes if I can help from it haha. What do you think?

I'll answer for him. He's about done with a couple really, really cool videos. I'm not going to give anything away but in my opnion they are huge. But he wanted to upload today but had some complications I think. He might wait til Friday now idk. Heck if he gets it fixed he might upload tonight.
Great look at a vintage MRE Smokey! Glad it seemed to hold up well. I gotta tell you, great minds must...eat alike! My next vid is going to be a 1992 brown bagger! The CBH is hands down my favorite brown bag menu of all time. I've got a few that are good for second place but the cbh wins by a landslide. I lucked out getting x2 cases of 1993s and they seem to be in good shape. I'm going to try to pick our a more questionable menu and check it. I've gotta send you one of these 93s. If the frh works in all these like it did mine you'll be very surprised. It literally transfered print from the bag to my kitchen counter top and I can't get it if no matter what I do. Plus it was insanely hot. Which I guess is why it transfered the print idk. Maybe the saltwater did it idk. I'll definitely be looking forward to checking out your cbh review. Hope ya like the hot chip video. I just found another way hotter chip that I can afford. So as soon as I can I'm picking those up for meb and the boy. Thanks for taking the time to watch. .... Later.
That looked really good, those chocolate cookies are amazing.
Those cookies are a modern marvel imo. I've never had a "bad" one. I've had a couple that tasted like the package a little bit but we're still good.

I could have used those Chow Mein noodles on my Cold Weather MRE Turkey Tetrazzini, I had on Monday. It really needed some crunch in there.

25 years old, that's amazing, proper storage is so important.
It really does wonders with these old meals. I won't hesitate to eat any that I got from this guy. He stored them very well. I'm in the process of sending some to a few other reviewers now. I get excited to see them get good stuff out of the vintage meals I send them.
Awesome love the old brown bags. I hope these are edible for you. Nice chow mein soup, with crunchy noodles. Yup Cherry drinks, artificial flavor and neon colors. Yeah that freeze dried fruit block looks amazing, I would love to try one of them some day. Thanks for the great review.
I'm sure I have an extra freeze dried fruit somewhere. Just remind me some time in about a month probably and I'll send it to you with some old school crackers and PB&J. I'm having a little trouble with a couple things at the moment but I'm confident I'll get it worked out soon. Oh and I'm pretty sure these are going to all be edible. I need to pull one with cheese spread or something like that to check.
Always wanted to try get my hands on the freezedried peaches..
I'll tell ya where you can get some freeze dried peaches that taste basically the same as these. If you have a dollar tree near you go check it out. I get those and strawberry, mixed fruit, and apples all the time for $1 a bag.
Sometimes it's really scary how long this stuff holds up. The US chocolate is the only one that doesn't bloom.. I wonder what they put in there to keep it that way. Great review. This was a fantastic ration.

I definitely thought that the pork would be one thing that would go bad. I'm glad it didn't because I ate the whole thing haha. I knew my 93 history pretty well. I've been wanting 93s for a long time. Especially since there's alot of 1st that year. There's alot of changes in 96 too.
just occurred to me people should stop eating MREs just in case the world comes to an end and there's nothing left to eat...except maybe each other 🤔 #jussayin

This was a decent home cooked feeling type of meal. I was happy to get to review it. I wish my camera had stayed on so I could have filmed me eating the whole thing. But ol well I only do that for the doubters. Lots of people think I don't eat the meals. I just prefer not to film me eating the whole meal because I'm a terribly slow eater.

I'm pretty excited to do that but I've got like 10 other things that are a bit more time sensitive. I'm trying to film as much as possible this week. hopefully I can knock a meal a day out without getting super fat.

bummer the coffee didn't make it, I watched another brown bag vid today, his was a 1992 and his Taster's Choice coffee did survive. must have been that much of a difference in storage conditions
I honestly think I just have bad luck because I know that these were stored about as good as they possibly could have been. I watch Gs video on the 92 cbh too.

I did my homework before I bought these ones. I'm not buying anymore unless I know that they were stored well. The guy had these since 1998 until 2018 and kept them really cool, dry, and even dark. So I expect to be able to eat them all.
Pork chow mein was one of my favorites, I would always pull out the mushrooms and just dump the whole bag of noodles into the bag of chow mein and mix it up...and peanut butter always went on the chocolate covered cookie bar lol +++++
Yeah I think the mushrooms last their flavor over the years or I would have picked them out. I figured that tons of guys ate the cookie and pb like that. I think this is a good solid menu. Better than alot of the new menus.
I was lucky enough to be given two brown bag MREs. One was ham slice with potatoes and the other was the corn beef hash. This was in 2016 before I knew anything about MREs and how old they were. Everything except the grape beverage powder in one was perfect. I actually ate the last apple jelly out of one of them just last year. Neither of them had a flameless ration heater.

They had to be from 1992 back to 87 I believe was the first year for Corned beef hash. That's hands down my favorite menu to date.
This was one of my favorite MREs from that time. I was in high school when this came out. I used to just dump the endentree into the chow mein noodles since it's got a bigger pouch and just eat it out of there. As far as MREs go, we've come a long way, but I miss some of the old stuff like the compressed oatmeal bars and the occasional freeze dried fruit, as it obviously lasted much longer!

Yeah they need to actually try to bring some of the old menus back. Especially corned beef hash imo.
Wow what an awesome vintage MRE, I think the old first model FRH’s hold up better than the new ones do, and yes I also think they should bring back the freeze dried fruit, replace the mixed nut and raisin snack with it lol.
Definitely, the freeze dried fruit needs a comeback. The old frhs are s 50/50 for me. Sometimes the work sometimes they don't. The one in this was honestly unusually hot. I did use salt water but still.it shouldn't have gotten as hot as it did.
That main looked awesome
I wish it was still available when i was in. At least i had my favorite spaghetti with meat sauce. I always mixed jalopeno cheddar with it. Nice review and thanks for posting brother. Now for the 2 thumbs down i dont get it one bit. Trolls ;)

The thumbs down are the same 2 people on both videos. I had the x2 within 20 minutes of publishing them. It's the same people every time. They give me their x2 views each time to haha. As far as the pork chow mein goes it's was what seems like a decent menu. If you didn't luke mushrooms back then that might have been a problem.

Perfect timing....I love it.
Sorta surprised that this meal didn't come with a small pack of white/brown Rice to absorb some of the liquid from the chow mein seems a bit wasteful without the rice but thats just my thoughts

I think some rice would have been nice. It was the first year so I'd say they were still working out the bugs. Also in 1993 they didn't put rice in as a side yet unfortunately. But yeah I think a bed of rice would have really set this off.

I never thought of coating the noodles with the tabasco. That'd probably be pretty good actually. I wish they would start putting pepper into U.S MREs. Idk why they never have though.

It was in really good shape. I try to find out the story behind all the mre's I've gotten. I only buy them if I think I'll be able to eat them. The last really bad one I got was a 1982 beef patty. I still have a few from that lot but I think the others will be fine. The guy was a collector and looked after those. I had a never before seen menu from that lot actually. It's a menu #9 Beef Cooked. Nobody knows what's up with it. Not even Steve.

Oldsmokey parafireboy from mre info sent me some or the pieces like cookies and a freeze dried fruit as a gift once when we did a trade it was a cool surprise. I've never seen a full brown bag mre in real life so yeah I've gotta get some eventually. Loved seeing this one reviewed anyway.
