One of the most beautiful songs ever written. And one of the few Beach Boys songs where Carl sang lead melody. Cannot imagine it any other way - his voice has maintained that angelic lyrical quality that male vocalists sometimes lose with their youth. Brian Wilson knew he was composing this for Carl. He is truly a genius and musical pioneer. ❤
My uncles and father were very tight with the Beach Boys, pretty much from the beginning. As a little girl, they were like 'extended uncles' and it wasn't until I was older that I became 'aware' of 'who' the Beach Boys were. I'll always have a fondness in my heart for them, and for their 'regular surfer guy' ways.
gets played a lot on the local oldies station here in NJ---wasn't even a big hit---flipside of "Wouldn't it be Nice"--God Only peaked at #39---not a bad double side smash for the Boys.....
What a selfless act, giving maybe the greatest song ever written to your brother to sing, and Carl absolutely delivered in every way....pure bliss, my god.
I believe it absolutely is the greatest song ever! I've never heard anything that comes near to the simplicity and intricacy of it, topped off with Carl's beautiful voice. It makes you want to go back in time and hear it for the first time again!
On the actual recording, there were only three vocalists: Carl, Brian and Bruce Johnston. Brian arranged the harmonies in such a way that it sounded like there were five singers, including Mike.
This song always makes me cry in its other original formatting. Such beautiful harmonies and lyrics. The music itself is based around such fantastic arrangements. This accapella version is incredible. Takes me back to seventies and playing their music in my room on a cassette player cranking up the volume.
Yeah... Now sadly, try to compare them to "same age" modern kids of today.... we got problems in this Country for sure. Let's get back to what made America Great again.... "Let's Do it Again"... :-)
A million trillion people must have & respect their BB memories. I won't live forever but for as long as I do, the BBoys & especially God only Knows will keep me going
The entire core of the Beach Boys sound was the beautiful job they did as vocalists. It was like a Champion (think Four Freshmen) quartet with a gentle Rock and Roll rhythm section. Brian got there first, so he can rightfully be called a Genius. The sad part is that we will never hear anything like this again, or at least not done as well...
Man. I just did not fully appreciate the Beach Boys enough way back in the days of the 60's. At 74 I sure do now! I know I fully recalled all that harmony back then, more appreciated now. Older and wiser... Dean Seattle
Wow this is just beautiful. The harmonizing just floors you. Nice to see the Beach Boys are influencing music in video games now. Sad that sometimes that's the only way a younger generation will ever find out about music that had true talent and heart from a generation past.
It is great hearing Carl and "The Boys" singing acapella. He was definitley the nicest of the Wison brothers. Brian was nice too, but was so messed up on drugs, for so many years, he had a hard time relating to what was going on. Carl held "The Beach Boys" together until his death. God bless you. You certainly died to soon. But they say the good, die young.
Recorded when all the electronic enhancements didn't exist. All singers in tune and precise in the context of a complicated vocal arrangement. Most people think of the Beach Boys as a teeny bopper pop group. In fact they were serious musicians.
Brian recorded this and other songs on Pet Sounds with The Wrecking Crew . An elite group of top notch studio musicians in LA. Glen Campbell was a member and played guitar on Good Vibrations. The "boys" were on tour (with Glen Campbell on bass ) when this was recorded and when they got back they did the vocal overdubs. It took weeks before Wilson was happy with the vocal takes.Wilson was a studio taskmaster that did stuff over and over till it was perfect.
I seen the original members 4times. The first time was at the Canfield fair in 1984 and still to this day I enjoy that song. Carl is the glue that held the beach boys together.
Bring back those good old days. Look at the group shot of the guys in suits. Youth is wasted on the young. Dennis was gone too young and we almost lost the genius of Brian forever. As I said, these were our carefree days.... I miss them.... do you??
anyone who saw the whole group....in the 60's, or even in the 70's, and saw CW singing this song, is truly lucky....he was, and remains, one of the greatest lead singers in the history of rock and roll. RIP, CW, DW...hope you're having 'fun, fun, fun' in "Rock and Roll Heaven." Miss you each and every day...and treasure our good times together...RIP, dear 'brothers-in-spirit.'
What a great voice Carl Wilson had and the harmonies from the rest of the group and ...................... Brian Wilson for writing for it .....................
This is more than just a song! This should be listed as the best of all time I my opinion. Its never faded, its never stuck in time somewhere. This song goes so far above the normal construction of lyrics and music together. You can hear what beauty is while listening to this.
RIP Carl Wilson! The quiet Beach Boy certainly wasn’t quiet on this song! What a voice! Endless Summer greatest hits was a Christmas present to me in the Mid 70’s and it was awesome to listen to with those big old head phones of the day!!!
"How was that, was that cool ?" Well let me tell you something, It's as if someone managed to record a room full of angels BB forever, There isn't a day that goes by where I don't play at least one song by them.
I think your description is too far OUT. Since nowhere is it recorded either in this world or in the bible. We don't knot KNOW that angels sing. Not in the bible. So if comparing Go to Humans.
Something so otherworldly about Brian coming in with the "BAH-B-BAH." It's like David Lynch's idea of the 'eye of the duck,' something fairly absurd that shouldn't work yet works perfectly. Pet Sounds is an album of things that shouldn't work, clip clopping, bicycle bells etc, yet it's all perfect
All the music & vocal arrangements written by one man...Brian Wilson. Simply, as Paul McCartney, once called him..."The Greatest Genius in Rock Music"! To solidify that title, he picked his younger brother Carl to sing lead on this song. Carl sang, as it says on his gravestone, "With the voice of an angel".
Que bella! Beautiful!!! You guys are genius / awesome! Beautiful song, beautiful voices! Please do every year 2022 till you cannot sing anymore! You are all blessed from God above for singing this song! I know God smiles down on you every time for thinking and mentioning HIM in this beautiful song! Peace & Blessings eternally to you all!
Vocals were simply treated as instruments. That is why he had no issue farming out leads to the person who is best suits.. This is what a great producer does...even when facing objections. BW was the quarterback and brought home the win. You lose a game or two and calls for the hook come out.
Not a huge BeahBoys fan, but ultimate respect for the talent and this vocals only track only proves they knew what the hell they were doing! #takentoschool
Brian's on anti-psychotics today and he's admitted that while they've immeasurably improved his mental well-being he's since lost a lot of his creative spark and finds songwriting and musical composition much more difficult. It's really bittersweet that such beautiful music was the product of terrible mental illness.
The kind of song even other great composers would have killed for to compose themselves, like Macca recognized. You listen it again and again like Salieri would listening to Mozart's, that you absolutely LOVE it how perfectly falls on the right words and spiritual mood inside the mind and heart it takes you and uplifts, and at the same time if you are a good composer you bite our hat wishing to have found it first and have penned it exactly like that. You'll hate not the work, but that merry go simple, Wilson got it as if "fallen on his lap" in his lucky savant musical sensitivity, like Salieri couldn't understand how that boyish Mozart could be gifted with such Musical sophisticated mature soul above any skill you may master too, but becoming unable to cross and break that glass ceiling to such rich river bend of gold he struck, to just pan it as (seemly) effortlessly through as Brian brilliantly penned here. You listen to loving it so much where it takes you, but hating him for it, so much is good altogether.
I like the casual “how was that? Was that cool?” at the end. After they absolutely crushed it.
Bruce
Brian Wilson's ability to write beautiful harmony is beyond belief. What an amazing ear he has.
Indeed he only had hearing in one ear. He feared losing hearing in that good ear if he got it infected by swimming.
Don't forget Tony Asher, he wrote the lyrics; and plenty more on Pet Sounds. I could repeat this throughout the comments, but I won't.
I was so lucky to see them so many times. Love Love Love.....
saw them at jones beach w chicago in 1987
Me too, they came to Canada a few times.
One of the most beautiful love songs EVER written and WELL PRODUCED!
One of the most purist pop songs ever recorded. This gave me chills.
gets played a lot on the local oldies station here in NJ---wasn't even a big hit---flipside of "Wouldn't it be Nice"--God Only peaked at #39---not a bad double side smash for the Boys.....
still does!!!!
No matter how many hundreds of times I have heard this song since the first time, on its release, it's always beautiful and new.
This song is a work of pure genius. Its hauntingly beautiful and takes you to another place. I am forever a fan.
What a selfless act, giving maybe the greatest song ever written to your brother to sing, and Carl absolutely delivered in every way....pure bliss, my god.
So true, I think that's how Brian felt also....I've heard Brian sing it and it's obviously still incredible but Carl made it immortal
Righteous comment.
They must have practiced for hours and hours. Accapella perfection.
I believe it absolutely is the greatest song ever! I've never heard anything that comes near to the simplicity and intricacy of it, topped off with Carl's beautiful voice. It makes you want to go back in time and hear it for the first time again!
ThePsychedelicCinema part of Brian's genius- knowing Carl's voice is the only human sound that could do it justice
Carl Wilson had the voice of an angel. Matt Jardine also sings this song beautifully.
On the actual recording, there were only three vocalists: Carl, Brian and Bruce Johnston. Brian arranged the harmonies in such a way that it sounded like there were five singers, including Mike.
Al jardine?
@@d.l.3168 Al's son Matt.
@@markprovance8995 correct Sir. The final vocal 'round' end of the song is just Brian and Bruce
@@markprovance8995 He's saying Al's son Matt also does a great version of this song, not that he's on the song.
This song always makes me cry in its other original formatting. Such beautiful harmonies and lyrics. The music itself is based around such fantastic arrangements. This accapella version is incredible. Takes me back to seventies and playing their music in my room on a cassette player cranking up the volume.
It brings tears to my eyes to see them so young in some of the photos. What a. Lovely song.
Yeah... Now sadly, try to compare them to "same age" modern kids of today.... we got problems in this Country for sure. Let's get back to what made America Great again.... "Let's Do it Again"... :-)
The ending though. I'm only 17 and have an undying love for these men.
I used to come home from high school,, lay on the floor, and listen to this over and over again,,Mind Blowing and just as great now!
A million trillion people must have & respect their BB memories. I won't live forever but for as long as I do, the BBoys & especially God only Knows will keep me going
So much power in the voices. I get chills listening to this.
If I could only have one song to listen to, I would pick this one. I have loved it ever since I was a kid when it first came out.

Their voices were so amazing. Clear as a bell. This is my favorite Beach Boys song. Music of my childhood. AM radio baby!
I saw them during a demonstration in 1971 @ Washington, DC. and again at the Garden State Art Center in the early 80"s.
Wow this is just beautiful. The harmonizing just floors you. Nice to see the Beach Boys are influencing music in video games now. Sad that sometimes that's the only way a younger generation will ever find out about music that had true talent and heart from a generation past.
At the end they ask, "how was that?"
That was absolutely musical genius.
I know right? “How was that? Was that cool?” “Uhh, yeah Brian, that was cool.” Duh. 🤣✌️
The Best Harmonies of any group hands down!!!! In all their work!
Except SandG and the Beatles....
The Carpenters Harmonies are really nice, so are Ann and Nancy Wilsons (Heart).
It is great hearing Carl and "The Boys" singing acapella. He was definitley the nicest of the Wison brothers. Gorgeous harmonies! So technically perfect! That was cool !

It is just amazing, wonderful, they sing like angels, this song touch my soul. God Only Knows what would be the world without pet sounds album.
Massive song by massive talented guys. If this song doesn't lift your spirit you're finished
The most beautiful song in the history of pop music.

Really great playlist🙏🏻🦋💫

Hmm....ahhh!!! Dream about with that kind of love!!!!
For being deaf in one ear, Brian really was a genius
Does being deaf in one ear generally make people stupid?

Una delle più belle canzoni di sempre ...

They don't make songs like this anymore. This is real music
Angelic perfection - thank you for posting this

LOL!
Brian's on anti-psychotics today and he's admitted that while they've immeasurably improved his mental well-being he's since lost a lot of his creative spark and finds songwriting and musical composition much more difficult.
It's really bittersweet that such beautiful music was the product of terrible mental illness.
imagine if brain had access to two golden ears.
Nothing comes close. As good as the day it was written and performed by the Boys!
0:57 second to 1:12 mark is beyond incredible!! This song is the most beautiful song ever written composed and recorded.
amaziiiiing voices .2018 y listen this and i cant believe .so much talent.😙😙😙😙😢love from Argentina.
