The reactor explosion caused a fire that killed the few first responders on duty that night. Most of the people who died trying to seal off stop the spread of radiation were young recruits. Many did not know and some knew. The recruits were given the option to go there for a few minutes or go fight in Afghanistan.

@@romandiesel8026 Not sure where you get the afgan theory, haven't heard it before, in most cases I heard or read before, they were called out and transported without knowing where they are going, as soviet union tried to keep it quiet from the people and the international community as to not spread panic and such, and even while the workers worked all around the exclusion zone, the radiation dosimeters they were provided were either uncalibrated or in some way rigged to show minimal radiation exposure, no matter if you worked in the outskirts of the exclusion zone or on the rooftop of the nearby reactor.

Kristian Tervakoski That was a complete disaster, the way URSS government handle all the issue, the silence, all the people who were expoesed to higher levels of radiation, that's unforgivable and inmoral as well

Kristian Tervakoski Do you really believe that a helicopter crew that was dropping sand directly on the reactor did not understand that they would die from the radiation?

Do you really think the firefighters, soldiers (and pilots) and volunteers did not know the radiation level was deadly? You don't need a PhD in nuclear engineering to know that, but you do need to be an arrogant jackass to assume they would not.

Very sad indeed. I personally knew some of the first responding fire fighters. Very brave men they were. They knew they would not survive yet they fought the fire. They did what the brotherhood of firefighters do, they gave the ultimate sacrifice in attempting to save others. Even after all these years I think of them often.

Now they are just rusty metal, junk, sick from radiation, after one accident that represented the end of world to Prypiat and Chernobyl, and it was about to be the same for the rest of the world... I loved the video and the music. Fascinating!!

Radioactive dust was everywhere on the ground around Chernobyl after the explosion. Since these vehicles were used during the cleanup, they picked up a lot of radioactive dust, thus becoming radioactive themselves. As for the choppers, they were flying right over the NPP to drop sand in the molten reactor, so they picked up radioactive dust when they passed through the smoke.

They would, most of Pripyat was looted of any metals you could sell in the scrapyard, I'm guessing the vehicle yard was more secured, but i did hear of a few cases, aswell as tourists taking bits and pieces as souvenirs, that's why the vehicle graveyard is gone, everything was buried. Also scrapyards don't usually have geiger counters to check if the metal brought is irradiated

It'll work, the dome is meant to keep the radioactive dust particles from getting wafted into the jet stream while the power plant itself is taken apart in chunks so the sight can be made significantly less dangerous. it'll still be thousands of years until humans can safely live in the Chernobyl area but we wont have to worry about that structure poisoning countless people just because a wall fell over.

The thing is: people who helped in Chernobyl had privelages. One of them being not having to pay taxes on car imports/registraion. Many marauders stole cars from the Chernobyl area and then re-sold them. My grandad only ever imported hungarian cars, but if you are going to buy lets say an old tank or APC

Beta and gamma radiation require heavy shielding to be blocked. Protective clothing doesn't stand a chance against subatomic particles and high frequency energy, and so it's ignored and goes straight to the skin - where your cells suffer. So while "cleaning", you're actually being exposed. The only thing clothing protects against is alpha radiation, which is good for sure, because it is the most damaging type of radiation out there - it's what killed Alexander Litvinenko (using a Po-210 source).

many people didn't know about those vehicles are contaminated and they jump the fence and take what they need, None of the machines used during the operation to clean up the zone could ever be used again, as they had become highly radioactive. They lay in vast metal fields for years, before they were gradually taken
    away and buried in pits.

none of them. after the explosion they were alarmed but were not informed about the radiation. most of them went up to the roofs, and never came down. they died in minutes because of high radiation level. after that people started to realize that something very bad had happened.

They've absorbed the radiation and will now continue to emit it forever, the vehicles still run (as good as when parked) but if you were in one it would be kinda like getting an X ray.

The pages I have seen that do tours show that the sites are safe for limited exploration, but there precautions. long sleeves, boots and pants are required. you are no longer allowed inside buildings due to structure risks. But in Pripyat yeah, no...
There are outer zones that likely may be cleared in the coming years but they are there to keep the maximum amount of people away from the area so who knows...

I can only imagine humans hundreds of years from now, with no concept of history, living in some post-apocalyptic world. They stumble across this graveyard and the other remains of Chernobyl, not understanding just how dangerous that entire place is.

The fire trucks are the most radioactive things there. They pulled right up to the reactor when it first blew and they had no idea it was a radiation incident. They thought it was just a fire... sad they all died with in 21 days.

They were heavily contaminated with radioactive material from the power plant. some of the vehicles were so badly irradiated that the metals, rubber and fabric that the vehicle was made of became radioactive as well.
They became too dangerous to use or salvage so they were dumped. The vehicles used in the area nearest the reactor building to bring in troops and clear up crews are still quite radioactive and still dangerous to be around for long periods of time.

Quick geography lesson - The Ukraine is a country that borders Russia (western side). "No" the Ukraine is not "in" Russia. History and pride aside (you'll have to Google the history between the countries - it's not glamourous), customs, culture, and language are similar.

The scary thing about this video is, these vehicles were running when parked.. They all have been ravaged for parts since being put here because of radioactivity.. So people have been exposed since then because of coming in here and removing parts, not to mention where the parts went to are now exposed.

A vehicle is full of all kinds of cavities, trying to decontaminate it is simply not worth it...these will most likely be cut up and dealt with as nuclear waste...
Also, at least the helicopters have been exposed to some serious neutron flux and given the fact that a good sized portion of the reactor core was all around the plant, other stuff will have been exposed to shitloads of neutrons as well, so it may actually be radioactive on it's own...

I did not know they were Ukrainians, we did not talk of ideologies or where we are from; to me they are brother Fire Fighters. I am a retired Chief Fire Officer now and think of them often.

It is indeed open for tourism. Radiation still exists. And there are even a few women that still inhabit the place in their original homes. This is the largest wildlife reserve in Europe now. Its amazing. As far as the cleanup and this place being a bustling environment again....try another 20,000 years. It will never be a city again. Once a beautiful place.

As of a couple of years ago, many of those vehicles were still SINGING with radiation. You definitely don't want to go climbing in or around them without a Geiger counter... If you're touring the area, you probably want a dosimeter, as well.

Haven't you ever heard of the Chernobyl disaster? This is in Ukraine, where the Chernobyl nuclear plant suffered a meltdown and radiation escaped the reactor, creating a massive exclusion zone around the area. Nearby is the abandoned city of Pripyat, which housed the workers and their families until the incident. Vehicles and such had to be abandoned, including those responding to the meltdown, because the metal retains high levels of radiation. It would certainly be a neat place to see, though.
