This. This was the performance that solidified my love for Blink 182 and also why First Date will forever be my favorite song. They just kept on going and "where the fuck is my guitar" is a given thing to sing ever since.
Props to them for continuing on through the song though. Mark and Travis never missed a beat, even though Tom was having technical difficulties, and Tom never stopped playing.

I honestly have way more (additional) respect for Tom (than Travis and Mark), since he handled it with humor and poise. I find it's always way shittier to have your own gear fail on you than your bandmate's.
Mark explained this, the band before them had left their wireless transmitter on and it was at the same frequency as Tom's but at least he carried the show on! true frontman.
They're awful live. All the little fanboys try to defend them and justify it with some dumb dreck about how it's "authentic" or whatever, but I have seen probably 1,000 shows in my life, and nobody is as sloppy as these guys. It's hard to watch. Not picking on this particular performance because there technical difficulties, but every other time I've seen them, it's been a total mess.
Love how tom called him self out on messing up, but kept character. You van say what you want about blink182, but that was punk rock element right there.
I saw it live on MTV. The next day, only the good version (corrected fake-version) was broadcasted. This FAIL-version was only seen once, during a LIVE broadcast.
What I love about blink is that they still put on a fun and memorable show despite Tom's voice sounding like a drunk surfer and his guitar sounding like shit. Their style is just so cool and addictive that you can't stop being a fan once you started. They stand out and that's why they were a success.
Straight up though props to Travis for at least somewhat holding that shit together. This is probably worst case scenario for the band and he adapted well. Still shredded the drums lol.
Blink 182 has had sooooo many shitty performances, and every time Travis just powers through like he's not even listening to them. Like: "I know how the song goes, if you guys can't play your part it's not my problem shugggaduhduggahduhduggaduhduggaduh"
@@beanlegume9965 A lot of the times with in-ear monitors they'll have a metronome, but also the rest of the band. Travis I doubt would have a metronome, but I definitely believe he would have the other guys turned way down so they don't distract him with their shitty playing.
at the EMAs awards show in frankfurt, 2001.... the two main acts were rammstein & blink-182. everything went ok during the soundchecks & rehearsals, but at some point during the evening, the venue's security people changed their walkie-talkie frequency, & during blink's performance, tom delonge's guitar was subject to exactly the sort of problems as in 'spinal tap'. he trashed the guitar & walked off. later, when they'd calmed down, they wanted to repair the recording of the performance, so that the actual trashing would look deliberate at the end of an otherwise unmarred performance. this meant getting the band & tom's guitar effects rack into the manor mobile at 2am. blink-182 were doing a european tour in a painted-up VW camper, driving themselves & renting backline wherever they went, so that's where the guitar rack had to be fetched from. but first I had to find rammstein's manager & explain what was going on, because they were in the sound truck themselves, remixing their set, & we needed to get the blink song fixed before the next satellite feed at 3am. so I had to kick them out, & help get tom installed. eventually, he watched the recording once, then overdubbed his guitar part, including a recreation of the trashing, in one take, throwing the guitar onto the couch in the back of the manor mobile. round of applause, utter professional. so then I had to go & drag the uplink guy out of the after-show party to send the re-mixes to london. got back to the hotel at 7am, sober & with a new cold starting.
@@duncan-rmi what's Tom like in real life? Did he take the re-record playing quite seriously in the mobile, when away from the crowds (as he often plays sloppy live on stage)
first I knew about it was one of the Mtv production managers came to find me (I was Mtv's on-site engineering manager, but my role was really as go-between; the BBC were running the big pictures truck while we had the manor mobile for the musical performances & various satellite uplink trucks, + a coupe of smaller broadcast production trucks). she had the band & maybe their manager in tow, & by this time they were all absolutely adamant that the guitar part needed re-recording. somehow it was my job to find out what (possibly keith mays &) rammstein were doing in there, & have them finish or get out so that we could fix Tom's guitar before the next uplink window (for the repeat airing) in less than half an hour. I can't remember what I said to rammstein- they weren't happy, but they got that it was urgent, & duly cleared off. meanwhile the blink boys (who seemed inseparable) & I went to their hippy bus & fetched Tom's effects rack. iirc, he watched the perf once in the mobile, then he just went for it. as he threw his guitar carefully onto the couch by the console (it's a big truck!), we applauded. then I took the tape over to the satellite truck. they didnt make a mistake. one of depeche mode's guitars was still plugged in and turned on the same wireless frequency as toms guitar so it was signal interferance.
Hahahaha this was hilarious, but you guys need to stop blaming the sound guy because he probably had nothing to do with it. It sounds like something either interfered with the guitar's wireless signal, or something was messed up in the guitar's input jack.

Too bad something wasnt blocking out Tom's voice. Was at his old house in Poway last week...just had to jump out and pass in the yard for old time's sake.

My best guess here is that Tom's guitar wasn't turning off. The video is grainy so I can't really see if he is using a cable, but I think he is using a wireless guitar system so my best guess is that either another band or the current wireless microphone system used for the show is interfering with his signal so his guitar was cutting in and out.
