Your book was the most inspirational for me when we built in 2012. Thank you. Great book to read if you are building.

Wow.... Just, WOW. This is, without a doubt, the most thoughtful house design and the most wonderful house I've seen...

      Well think it over.
First you draw landscape distance sight lines. Then you draw light passageways. Than you draw human movement spaces (outdoor hallway). Then you can start looking at elevations in the home relative to functional and living spaces.
      It almost seems easy!
(no it’s not or we’d all be architects)

Sarah, This is my favorite house in your collection, and I would rather live in it than in Falling Water or the Robie House. It is the closest to my ideal house style, the Zen ranch. If you live in the country in California or Oregon, you have to consider the real-world threats against life and home. Those threats include cougars (not kidding), earthquakes, and country crime in an area that may be 45 minutes from the nearest police station. I believe in building homes with a 200 year lifespan, not a 50 year lifespan, as some builders construct today. So, my Zen ranch dream house would be single story, ICF superstructure, McNear utility size thin brick clad, adequate, but not exorbitant window area, and a metal roof. I am a male, so I like a rugged, fortress look. The roof lines on your Lake House are fantastic, especially the contrast between the hip and gable roof and the curved roof. I also love the roof paint color. I believe that is called *burnished slate,* but I am not sure. It gives an organic natural look to a metal roof. It actually is the color of mud, but it looks wonderful.

I love Sara Susanka. She’s as much philosopher as she is architect.

Sarah, Nice home, thanks for the insightful tips. I especially like your comment about windows not needing to be centered. I have owned your book for 20 years. It influenced me while designing and building my last house, as well as my current project! Peter

I just figured out a design element I'd been toying with.
