Building Fixture Plate Storage Racks using outsourced CAD design!

- We needed a better way to storage fixture plate inventory! But this video isn't really about fixture plate storage racks! It's about leveraging Upwork to find a CAD designer to design them (we aren't great designers, and we definitely don't know much about sheetmetal design) AND using sendcutsend to have the racks fabricated!

Wow, sendcutsend has many services beyond laser cutting. Bending, PEM inserts, powder coating etc. Thanks for showing this quick little inventory control project. Glad to hear, you already need more of these cabinets in the future.

Love these types of videos! I think a great video would be to follow a plate from inventorying raw material through manufacturing and then shipping.

A simple solution but it works great!
Next you gotta get people to start taping those labels in the middle of the plate every time ;) Also, I know this is monday quarterbacking, but if all you need is a box frame that can adjust height, 8020 is perfect for stuff like that. It's always a bit of a sticker shock but I doubt it'd be that far off in price compared to this super custom solution

could you do a video where you tell us some details about your ERP? What functionalities it has and on what technology it is build, how it ties in with your warehouse management, CRM, website, and your machines, etc.?Also maybe some stuff that led to the design decisions you made? And maybe who coded it and how long it took?

I second this, as a growing shop I would love to hear more about this. I paid for a year of JobShop and was disappointed with it and the CS.
Second that, many good videos around the ERP system but we are still missing the walk trough of it :-)
TBH, 150 USD for designing this sounds like a bargain.
If you are looking for improvements, the top plate would still function exactly as needed even if it was only a portion of the depth. It's only keeping the plates upright, so you don't need a contact the full distance, and the bottom plate will in any case guide it straight. At least over here, a 1m2 sheet of 25mm thick PE plate costs something like 500€.
Great story. Sometimes you need to look at the solution like the customer does because he/she doesn't care how it happens only that it gets done.

Use SCS for a whole mess of stuff at work. They truly are an amazing outfit for stuff like this.
Between SendCutSend and OSH Cut my metal brake and shear are gathering dust.
I just started using send cut send about 6 months ago as I didn't want to cut carbon fiber in my mill. I felt the same way as John did as I always told myself "I could do it or fix it" but I did some thinking on that and I would be spending my time that could be making $150-$300per hr on a part I can just order from send cut send for $10-20. Man, choices back when I was poor were way simpler. I since then I have made half a dozen ot so more orders for combat robot parts as there prices are just so damn low (in my opinion).
We did a price analysis and found that in many cases where we use plate like stock (think 1/4" X 2" x 8") that it was cheaper to have it cut from send cut send than to buy the bar and saw cut it ourselves. When we had a waterjet we still could not get the stock on the floor for the price they are cutting and sending it to us for. The only thing I wish they could do but have not is Nylatron GS, its basically just gray nylon that one of our customers uses as a wear surface but its a specialty order so I get why they are not interested.

Those would be great to add a micro switch or induction sensor to be able to determine if there is a product in the slot. Some microswitches and arduino, a bit of programming, and I'm sure you can have it tied into lex for realtime inventory

Another option to keep in mind is oshcut (not sure if i spelled that right). Theyre in texas. Jerryrigeverything used them a bunch for his electric humvee conversion.

@@nyccnc Back story to frame the problem. Were a job shop for short run parts. We recently noticed that we spend way too much time trying to remember or figure out what tools are where. Especially once in the machine. So I made note cards for all of our standard tools. Now I'm making card holders that will magnetically attach to the machine so you can know exactly what tool is in what slot. You can also note right on the card the current Z offsets and the date the tool went into the machine so we can start tracking tool life better. Not sure if thats the best way but I think it will work for the current flow in the shop.

You should number the slots so you don't have to manually count each time.
I would print off labels and stick them on the front edge of each slot. Each slot would be an easy location identifier. (E.G. Rack A, slot 4)
Great video! Was the shipping for those size parts reasonable? I've been wondering if SCS+shipping cost is comparable to local shop prices.
SCS is free ground shipping. I use them all the time at my dayjob. They are cheaper than most full service sheetmetal houses. But, their capabilites are less. If you can work within their capabilities, they are a great resource.
