    My favorite Malawi Cichlid is probably the Aulonocara baenschi (blue lip yellow fish) maybe one day i'll keep them (also Tangayika cichlids are special in my eyes)

      @@CichlidBros one question, I know it's only been maybe 2 weeks since you've upgraded, and using now crushed coral and shells, do you notice them digging into the substrate or not really now because of the crushed coral and shells?

    @markpaulson1346 Рік тому +1

    Love watching your videos! Always so much useful info!! What substrate would you recommend if your pH is where it needs to be right out of the tap? Thanks!!

    • @CichlidBros
      @CichlidBros  Рік тому +1

      Glad it’s helpful! You could use any substrate in that case and be just fine. I’d recommend something that looks natural to lake Malawi

      For an all-male setup, other peacocks, common haps, synodontis, bristlenose pleco, and electric yellow lab mbuna. Anything else, and, unless you're lucky, you have to put in the work.

    Great video.. I was thinking of doing a 75 gallon with a 20 gallon sump. How many peacocks would you recommend for that setup? Are there any general guidelines for stocking? Like 1 peacock per how many gallons?

    • @jinthao00
      @jinthao00 Рік тому

      Tazawa said to take your tank size and dividing by 2 for heavy stocking. So for 75, that's about 37 fish. Cichlidscape recommended 12 to 15 in a 75. It all depends on your filtration, maintenance schedule, budget, and fish temperament. I currently have 11 that ranges from 2 to 4 inches, but I'm planning on no more than 20.

    Great Advice! Im have a new 180 tank on order. ( not looking forward to getting it down to my basement, I loled at you guys doing the same ) Still deciding but probably going with peacocks. ( maybe south american ) I have seen tanks with a black and white mixed substrate. Im pretty sure the white is just aragonite sand, but not sure what to use for the black. I have used black diamond blasting sand in the past. Have you done that before. Any suggestions?

    • @jinthao00
      @jinthao00 Рік тому

      Caribsea makes a black aragonite sand.

      black sand tends to be magnetic. If you didn't already know.

    Hey real quick, I ordered a pair of peacocks from my pet store, I'm not interested in a community tank, I just really like having a single individual fish or 2... Would I be in the clear with just a male and female? Or should I get some more
    Edit: a little bit of a time sensitive comment because I have a week till I pick them up, just any advice is appreciated. I'm a very experienced fish keeper but ciclids are very new to me and I'm not used to fish who live in groups, plus Google isn't giving me a clear answer
    Edit2: i could also just let any potential eggs hatch and let the fish reproduce naturally if needed (within reason) again, any advice welcome and ty if you read this far

  • @crazyaboutafricancichlids1612

    I had a question for you with the aroganite substrate do you add the ph buffer during water changes or does it buffer itself with the acidic water?

    • @jinthao00
      @jinthao00 Рік тому

      It buffers itself. Also, the crushed coral will get dissolved by water acidity and flow. As ph rises, crushed coral gets dissolved slower, leading to ph buffering.

    • @crazyaboutafricancichlids1612
      @crazyaboutafricancichlids1612 Рік тому

      @Jin Thao so when it doesn't get the seachem Malawi buffer for ph added in water does it slowly rise back to stability after a large water change? And do you add salt with the h20 change? I was using black beauty sand and had to use buffer to keep my ph at 7-8 ppm

    Why when I look at videos everyone's African cichlids are swimming and having fun. But my cichlids are always hiding, they are healthy and swim around but only behind my big stone rock. Can you tell me why.

    • @CichlidBros
      @CichlidBros  Рік тому +1

      Could be many things, but my best guesses: either too much decor in the tank, lighting is too strong, not enough flow, or water quality isn't great. Hard to say exactly without seeing the tank though

    • @BenrealMcCrimon
      @BenrealMcCrimon Рік тому +1

      @Cichlid Bros thank you I took my big rock out until they start swimming around in the tank. Water is o.k. everything is fine.

    Malawi lake water is not hard! It is a soft to medium hard water with elevated PH!

    • @CichlidBros
      @CichlidBros  Рік тому +2

      It does have higher carbonate hardness. And I did say elevated PH.
