Ward says he would never believe Gatti commited suicide, he wasnt a quitter. Police in brazil are just lazy that they labelled a man who got smashed behind the head as a suicide.
Gatti was the biggest fight Ward ever had. It's what he's remembered for. The movie focused more on his struggles to get this fight(s). Great movie btw
Don’t forget being a New Jerseyian. He’s one of ours too! We never missed a Gatti event! He was more beloved out here than anyone not named Frank Sinatra! He was even more beloved than Tony soprano
arturo gatti was fighting here for quebec province canada , this guy was known to have one of the toughest face ever. he could get a beating and still would remain in the fight working for the win
Yup! good 'ol Canadian kid. Like you said tough as hardtack, but micky, IMO, was equally tough. I believe a couple of their fights was selected for fight of the year by ring magazine.
Neither of them were the best boxers out there but you put them together they gave you the best fight of the year if not the decade. I'll never forget these 3 fights.
Grew up in the same city as Ward (Lowell, MA). He was actually the best man at my wife's uncle's wedding. In the 2nd fight w/ Gatti, Micky ruptured his eardrum on the punch the knocked him down (& amazingly still finished the fight). Gatti broke his hand in the 3rd fight. After their 3rd fight Ward retired. They became good friends & Micky actually walked Arturo out to the ring for his next fight. Ward also helped Gatti train for future fights. Gatti's wife came out later w/ news that Gatti supposedly commited suicide while they were in Brazil. This was strongly contested by everybody that knew Arturo & there was strong speculation that his wife had something to do with his death. There's a documentary covering these 3 fights that is Highly Recommended.
wasn’t his wife accused of killing him first and then it came out he had an extensive history of suicidal ideation? even tried to kill himself the year before
This has to be one of my favourite fights ever when I first seen this years back I was just blown away at how they gave there bodies n minds to the fans
Gatti v Ward, two great fighters who suited the audience, watched all 3 fights and possibly the greatest trilogy of all time. Just wish there were more match ups like these. Absolute tear ups, but it needs two guys who can take a punch, all about the chin. No better tribute than a mid fight standing ovation.
I love that they became very close friends. To the point that Mickey help train Gatti for his fights after he had retired and he spoke at his funeral sadly when Gatti was killed. Great fights, truly, and a couple of good guys. 🤙🏻
I loved those fights...they were so good. Also I loved George Foreman as a boxing announcer. Met him once..I am an ex-college offensive lineman..big guy. George has the biggest hands I have ever seen. He dwarfed mine.
Ward and Gatti were two of the best fighters to watch. Here are some great fights from the 2000s you might like. Berrera vs Morales trilogy. Corrales vs Castillo 1, the 10th round Joe Goossen (Corrales' trainer) says "You better f**king get inside on him". Great stuff and will always stick in my memory.
Saw all three fights and it still to this day ranks among the best trilogy's the sport has ever seen. A case of a brash, fast, cocky, and skilled Arturo Gatti, who was half Canadian/half Italian and the tough, tenacious, hard as nails and 100% pure Irish, Mickey Ward, not without a few skills of his own. These two guys pounded the ever loving shit out of each other over three separate fights and came out the other side with quite a mutual respect for one another, and ended up remaining the best of friends for the rest of their lives until Gatti's untimely death in Brazil under suspicious circumstances in 2009 at the age of 37. For a time, Ward even trained Gatti during a failed comeback attempt. Shortly after his passing, Arturo was voted into the Boxing Hall of Fame and Mickey Ward went and did his induction. One of Mickey's two pit-bull's is even named Arturo.
The finally of UFC's 1st season of The Ultimate Fighter, the 1st fight with Stephan Bonnar vs Forrest Griffin is also a must watch. It was an absolute bloodbath.
There were no losers they were both winners in the aspect they gave the world the best fights and rounds to ever grace boxing 🙌 now boxers don't wanna fight just looks for a opening and throw 2 or 3 punches these two men came to fight and lay it all on the line.
The Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward fights are some of my favorites. My favorite fight ever is Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker vs. Oscar De La Hoya on April 12, 1997. I was /am a huge Whitaker fan and "Sweet Pea" got robbed and De La Hoya won. Many of fans and announcer's believed the score was almost even. That said it is a great fight with Pernell putting on a show.
@4:34 I had to watch that back and forth like 10 times tbh. I just kept rewinding cause of how great of combos it was. One of the best trilogys in the sport.
If all fights were like this id be a lot more into boxing. I love the stand in the middle of the ring and just go for it. Just giving it till you or I cant take it anymore.
I watched all 3 fights with these guys & all 3 were great. I was 8 months pregnant & ready for bed for the 1st fights. Ya right. It was so good I called my mother to tell her. She was already watching & told me to get off the phone & hung up on me. Us Philly people love boxing & these fights were right up our alley. Plus ref Frank Cappuccino was from Philly. The 1st fight happened 19 years ago. Wow! Check out Marvin Marvelous Hagler & Tommy Hitman Hearns. Both were brawlers.
Can you guys react to max hollaway hes from hawaii and a former ufc featherweight champion if you guys do want to react to him I suggest the documentary that's 14 minutes long and posted 6 months ago I'm sure
I don't believe there has ever been nor ever will be another trilogy of fights between two evenly matched competitors in which the fans got more BANG for their BUCK!!! Whatever those tickets cost... WORTH IT!
Rumor is that if Ward had won the last fight of this trilogy that the third act of the movie "The Fighter" about his life and career would've been the trilogy of fights with Gatti. But because Ward lost two of the three fights, the producers and director, thought it would be better to end the movie on a high note. With Ward winning his WBU World Title.
In the third fight Gatti almost fought the entire fight, only throwing left hands. He had broken his right hand on Ward's hip. The camera crew in his corner caught Gatti telling his trainer. Gatti: My hand's broke. Trainer: What? Gatti: My right hand is broke. Trainer: What do you want me to do? (Asking Gatti if he wanted to stop the fight.) Gatti: I have to keep going. Not that I want to try and keep going. I HAVE to keep going. Warriors. I think after the first fight both fighters ended up in the same hospital to get checked out. They ended up getting examined in the same room and didn't realize the other was in there as a curtain was in between them. When a doctor was checking on Ward, Ward starting answering questions (probably checking for a concussion) and Gatti heard him. They pulled the curtain back, looked at each other, smiled and asked one another "Are you okay?" After the third fight Ward ended up retiring from boxing and Gatti continued with his career. They had so much respect for each other that Gatti invited Ward to be in his corner for his next fight. Ward accepted the invitation and I believe he was in Gatti's corner for most of the rest of Gatti's fights.
Gatti supposedly committed suicide by strangling himself with the straps of his Brazilian wife's pocket book while in Brazil. Sure that's what happened.
For all those who watched "ROCKY" and said " That could never happen, there's no way two men could beat each other blind and bloody for that many rounds without a stoppage", Two bad ass fighters with huge hearts.
Honestly, in Gatti vs Ward I, the 9th round is one of the most entertaining rounds in boxing history. The highlight should have included the entire round to be fair, because it's so incredible. Also, in fight 2, when Ward got put down in the 3rd round, it was because that punch that hit him ruptured his ear drum. That's why he was wobbling all over the place the rest of the fight, but he still fought on to the end. Then, in fight 3, Gatti broke his right hand early in the fight and still fought through to the end. It's a great trilogy!
If you also get a chance watch the HBO documentary High on Crack Street, it's about Micky Ward's brother Dicky Eklund who was also a good fighter at one point
Think I've watched this entire trilogy three or four times. Three of the best fights you'll watch. Another great brick to watch would be Manny Pacquiao vs Juan Manuel Marquez.
The highlights don't show the knockdown of Gatti at the end of the 6th Rd when the Ref got to the count of 9 and the bell rang saving Gatti from losing the fight. There is a lot of controversy that the Ref got to the count of ten before the bell rang. probably why they don't show it.
@@officeblokedazGatti and Ward became close friends, the loved and respected each other. Mickey Ward actually trained Gatti for his comeback fight at the end of his career
Maybe the best trilogy of all time. Of course, Ali vs Frazier is also up there. As for the best round, Marvin Hagler vs Thomas Hearns was pretty freaking electric. And you could do a proper reaction because I think it only goes 2 rounds.

My god, the heart these guys put into the fights is crazy. Huge respect.
the most defining moment of the fight is Mick getting knocked down and him punching the ground. His body gave up but his fighting spirit wants more.
Gatti was of Italian decent, and he’s Canadian, born in Quebec. Also my favourite fighter
Don’t forget being a New Jerseyian. He’s one of ours too! We never missed a Gatti event! He was more beloved out here than anyone not named Frank Sinatra! He was even more beloved than Tony soprano
These fights remind me of boxing movies, where 2 fighters basically take turns punching each other in the face unblocked.
