Im no expert but I think narrower tires are only effective if there is solid ground beneath the mud or snow that the tires can get a grip on. If the ground is not solid it makes sense to have wider tires so that the vehicle can drive "on top" of the mush. From what I see in this video there are some real mudpits here and there so the truck would just sink faster in those if the tires were narrower.
Gabriel, the truck is a 1976 SCANIA SBAT 111SA 166. Automatic transmission, dead weight 12.1 tonnes, maximum weight (with cargo) 16.6 tonnes. Six wheel drive, 7.8m long, diesel motor, 296 HP with a fuel tank of 170 liters. Wheel size 400/65-26,5 (twenty six fucking inchers!)
Wide tires are for two purposes in this case, partly for low ground pressure and partly for load bearing because it's working better in all terrain driving with all tires in ecual wideness than have twin mounted tires at the rear as usual for road trafic.
ok, I have a stupid question. Why do the tires on that truck have to be so wide? load bearing? seems like narrower tires would be better for mud and snow. But obviously its doing the job. Beautiful truck and nice video as usual.
