Woman squatting on Parika Sea Dam pleading for help to escape struggles

- For 19 years, Naomi Ramdeholl, a single mother of five, tried to sustain herself and family while living on the Parika Sea Dam, East Bank Essequibo. This is on the other side from where we did the previous videos, near the Parika Stelling and the fisheries. She owned another house at the “water edge” but it fell due to the heavy wind. She and her children sold chips with the “lose plantains” that they pick up free at the stelling. They built their current house with the proceeds from those sales. She operates a shop and also rears and sells chicken. Her parents next door, her sister, Lalita and another resident, Ravi also suffering and are glad to get out.

Another good exposure of the poor suffering without anyone in the government responding in a timely manner to elevate their situation. People should not have to be living under these horrible conditions this is totally unacceptable. Hopefully someone can help people like these out of this mess. Keep up the good work Shabna!👍

the gov will help,but they just 2 years in power and only started to withdraw the oil money in jan 2022,yes we can help in the mean time

Unfortunately it appears as though some members and others who are in positions to help elevate the daily suffering of citizens are failing to act in a timely manner. The lady stated that they have are not responding to her request and pleas after her many complaints and attempts.

Shabna, these are really devastating stories, but I’m glad that you’re shedding light on them. I feel helpless though, what can I do to help? This is bigger than just providing food or school supplies. The process of acquiring a house lot, seems so complicated, then they need money to build on the land, also how is someone without a job qualifying for a loan to build. Alot of heartless people would comment alot of negatives. These people are punishing indeed. I have never seen so many cases of shegga on their feet and hands.
Another great story/ post, If she isn't getting a response from the housing department. Sometimes you need to be more proactive in things in order to get a more accurate response/ update. Maybe you can suggest that to her and let her take all of her supporting documents.
I heard that she said that two of her kids not going to school, why is that so? Regardless of how poverty hits someone they should not deprive their kids from education!!! There's no excuse for that. There's opportunity for them so please suggest to her about sending the kids to school. Education is one key to success. She said only one kid is living at home with her, did she mentioned to you where the others are? In the end is a very difficult situation that she is living in and none could be judgemental about her or anyone else in these circumstances but suggestions are always helpful and I hope and pray that she seriously think about sending her kids to school so that they become intelligent and make wiser decisions in life. Another great video Shabna. I'm cannot judge because I do not carry their weight on my shoulders. However, it left me conflicted because I see the conditions they are living in and wonder why some choose to do nothing to get a house lot or bring more children into that harsh environment especially some knowing their home will easily flood.

Shabna, I had anxiety watching you in that tiny boat in the rough water. Thank you for shining light on the less fortunate in Guyana. With the vast forests, can't the government clear land and give it to the squatters to get them out of their dangerous living conditions? These people need priority housing. They also need to be educated about not having large amounts of children they cannot afford, otherwise the cycle will continue. It's heart breaking to watch these videos. I don't know how they sleep at night not worrying about their houses getting washed away. They're certainly strong, brave women. They just need a break and some guidance.

My heart goes out to her. However, people like her need to be educated about life in general. She has four teenage children and a deadbeat father, yet she gets herself pregnant from another man who have dumped her and a one year old. Social services are badly lacking and the government need to step up to the wicket. Hope things get better for her.
