The building is way beyond repair and has been for a couple of decades. The copper dome, of course, is long gone. At one time, someone bought the building and was going to rebuild it into a private residence, when it was still practical to do so. He spent a lot of money but not nearly enough, and it once again succumbed to vandalism. It is now in the same shape as the rest of East Cleveland, absolutely hopeless..As a former resident of East Cleveland, it's an astonishing fall from grace!
Although East Cleveland is in rough shape the observatory seems to be in a good neighborhood. It's true it will never be restored to its former glory but I could see the copper domes replaced with glass as sort of a greenhouse room or outdoor rooftop deck.
It should be restored and or saved. They made the first successful adopted telescopic sniper scope for the military in the Warner & Swasey scope. Few examples are known to exist but fortunately numbered.
24-inch (two "feet") refers to the objective lens of a telescope. NOT the length. And doubling the size of the objective lens gathers 4 times as much light. A tragic loss. People are despicable.
If I were a resident in one of those houses I'd be plenty p***** off that an eyesore like that continues to remain unaddressed, depressing local property values, attracting a criminal element along with environmental hazards and inviting kids to explore where they could get hurt falling through a floor. C'mon -- there's not even a fence with "keep out" signs around it??? That is so messed up. This is a lawsuit waiting to happen at local taxpayer expense. Such a shame. I'll bet at one time having that observatory there contributed some prestige to the neighborhood.
This is in the corner of a neighborhood. Pretty far from the Case University. Somebody could make this a cool house with a lot of money spent on it. The is likely zoned residential , so even though it would make a great coffee shop or something, they probably won't allow that.
@@artofexp I think the 9.5 refractor, the first scope is still with Case at the University Circle Campus unless it got moved again. One of the larger ones, the 24" Schmidt went to Kitt's Peak in Arizona and it was replaced with a 36" reflector which went to Nassau Station in Ohio. Possible they moved again as light pollution continues to worsen.
it wasn't a bd neighborhood while it was being built and people worked there!!! east cleve was once a model city until poor city mgmt let it fall. so do some research b4 u spout off!!!
I know it wasn't a bad neighborhood when it was being built, I'm saying restoring it now would be pointless because of how down hill the east side has become.
My parents first house was in East Cleveland just moments from the observatory. Historical place torn apart by time first & then vandals.

@@artofexpits in a horrible neighborhood scary to even drive through
Cool building!
What a great building to renovate as a private residence. If not saved in the next 5-10 years it will be too late. At this point, there is still hope!
The bones are great 👍
Great video. Never knew it existed.
Nice interesting video!
now who would have vandalized that building? I wonder who did that............. the nice children in the neighborhood? aww such nice children

I watched grown men stripping the copper off the domes while working in that area a number of years ago it was sickening
Very sad
the people that vandalized this building will never achieve the skill it took to build or work in a building like this.
Enriched yet ?
I watched in broad daylight grown men stripping the beautiful copper from the roof while working in that area a number of years ago sickening
The theatre was a lecture hall and cinema
5:53 You were in their with a ghost watch the door.
I thought that was very strange too! Maybe the guy from the old photo in the intro!
In a better neighbourhood and without that noisy highway at the rear, this could make a spectacular home.
We need save this building! - Nightclub? Pot shop? Psilocybin clinic? Thanks for the video!
It’s in a neighborhood so likely could only be residential.
There were several bodies found here a few years back as well as Warner and swasey off Carnegie. I do not recommend going there at night
What a shame, this building could have been donated to a school or college to further studies and now it's worthless.
Nobody would go to a school or any other educational facility in that city. Its a horrible place
Growing up I watched the scavenger s chop that dome of with hatchets it was all copper you need to be careful you might get jumped and robbed their
Very sad.. the copper is always the first to go.
You coulda told me that this was in Chernobyl and I wouldn’t have known any differently.
You went there without national guard security team,,?
What a shame
All of East Cleveland is a shame - Euclid is next
It's thier culture to destroy stuff
Cool old building. Someone should turn it into apartments or a restaurant.

I agree it’s an eyesore but this is East Cleveland where hundreds of abandoned properties exist.
Google some videos of East Cleveland you’ll understand what happened here..
We explored places like this when I was younger but we never did stupid shit like graffitti.
Those are the signs of the Zodiac on the floor
Very interesting thanks for the info! The entry floor is probably my favorite part inside.

Omg I see what I left there I’m dead asff🤣🤣🤣🤣
Don’t leave us hanging what you leave???
@@artofexp you can see my name multiple time on the wall lmaoo im srry 🤣🤣
At least the telescopes escaped the crack heads.
Thankfully they were transferred out. Both telescopes are at universities in Arizona.

The little rooms are just store rooms offices bathrooms etc
Thanks! There are a lot of tiny storage rooms in this building. I believe to account for the curved architecture of the domes.
Too bad they won't restore it as it was new ...
I think I have a couple of their rifle scopes
They didn't appreciate there gift
What a shame.
So this place is also in a bad neighborhood restoration would be pointless due to all the theft and vandalism and violence

Look what the trash animals did 😢
Never go to east Cleveland
Come visit our beautiful city...bahahaha...if all the people moved away today. Our city would look the same as Detroit.
A complete dump.
That place is in a really bad area of cleveland its the worst ghetto around
