It seems like the game has shifted from its original blend of COD, Halo, and Portal into something more like a combination of Halo, Portal, and a generic class-based shooter. I agree so much! Discovered Splitgate 1 just recently, and really enjoying it with my kids. The first game was so good aside from the aesthetics of it. This looks like such a massive improvement in terms of animations and graphics. The only thing that worries me is the abilities/factions. Kind of diverges away from the beauty of splitgates core which is portals and guns. And it adds a lot of randomness when playing casually. In ranked, I can see how it adds complexity, but what usually happens is some abilities are stronger than the rest at any given point in time creating a meta. And within matches, players slow down to wait for their abilities.

@@Turned2Icei don’t think there will be any more big fps’s released without any abilities because the world of fps games has developed. we’re not in the cs 1.6 era where the only core skill is mechnical, it’s now more about strategic gameplay because it gives the game more dimensions. time to suck it up and accept the world we live in today
@@purple1703 Most abilities are not 'strategic gameplay' a lot of the time it replaces skills that would otherwise be needed like game sense, map knowledge, positioning etc.
As a hardcore splitgate 1 fan, and knowing what the skill ceiling is like, its wild to watch "gameplay" of splitgate 2, where all the COD creators, are literally not using portals at all, in SG1 just now, you are literally spam portals over and over to move around, not much running and gunning at high skill... strange "gameplay" video, still sick though. "You can get away with not using the portals" is a wild statement.
when this guy said "you can get away with not using portals" it felt a punch in the groin - he probably has been paid a ton of money to promote this game and he literally shat on the main mechanic in a gameplay overview trailer... and they kept that in?? what the actual fuck
You guys are focusing WAY too much on the abilities. In all of this footage there was a shockingly small amount of people actually going through portals.
Yeah this is what I feared..By giving players abilities, you can almost ignore the main mechanic of the game, what's the point of portaling around when you got your deployables there What's the point of portaling when you can rush at your ennemies with an ability This game is trying to be both an ability centered and Portal centered game at the same time idk if that's gonna work the way the devs wants it to work The players are barely using the portals, some do but damn, i'm not even a pro and Ik i could use em alot better
theyre trying to give an overview of everything in 5 minutes, of course theyre going to use the abilities more than the portals. but any good portal player can play around the abilities and can use them to their advantage while also giving casuals a chance. a big thing in the first game that casuals died out super fast because of the skill gap between the players who played since beta and the peak. the devs just want to make the game last. it seems quite balanced to me
This is such a delusional take. Obviously portals will still be the main attraction of the game, the devs even said that. And, just think, portals will be used a lot. They’re obviously broken, so, players will be using them when they get more comfortable with the maps
I’d say it’s not exactly a hero shooter. More a loadout based shooter like Halo Reach or Titanfall 2. Those games have abilities, but neither are Hero Shooters. This seems more like that. At least from my POV anyways.
My favorite part of Splitgate was it's movement and teamwork that pushed the skill. I'm afraid adding abilities takes away from that just like they did with Halo and other games, where originally the main appeal was movement and teamwork. Good map design and movement mechanics were the basis for what made those games good. I feel like abilities are a crutch around that. I'll still try it out but I'm worried
Same feeling here Been playing splitty since Beta Season 1. Currently on a near 300-day play streak. I'm worried how adding abilities will affect the gameplay. Splitgate 1 was barebones, sure, but that led to a greater reliance on gun skill, map knowledge, and gun spawn timing. Splitgate 2 looks fun, sure. But in modern FPS gaming, people will always gravitate towards anything that gives them a personal edge in gunfights over anything that helps the team. I have a feeling the game will quickly devolve into everyone playing a fast TTK, solo-fragger meta, just like XDefiant, Finals, and every other other arena shooter that intorduces assymmetrical, ability-based gameplay. I'm hoping its good and I will try it, but hearing Splitgate 2 was going to be class-/faction-based like XDefiant immediately shot down a good deal of hype I had for the game.
@@FASynergy I couldn't have said it better. This is exactly how I feel. I'd much rather rely on teammates than abilities. Your "ability" (comparative advantage) should be your team work and map/weapon spawn control. Abilities make it hard to predict what help teammates need so I don't feel as compelled to stick with them. I also feel like I'll rely on my abilities rather than my teammates. Team work should be the focus of a team game.
@@mandan7654 You can still have abilities and teamwork. OW1 (Also, kinda OW2, but not really) proves this with the ult combos and strategic timing of knowing when to use your abitilies.
@@BeastiezCyZ I specifically didn't play the overwatch games because they are class ability based. I specifically liked Splitgate 1 because it was equal spawn kit based. If a game is designed around the abilities that's one thing, but a game that tries to do both does neither well.
@@mandan7654what you dont realize is this only ads depth, knowing someone has a button that gives them an advantage gives you the ability to play around it. as someone who knows a lot about hero shooters these abilities are no where near impactful enough for the “solo fragger” meta u r scared of. As a high diamond low masters splitgate player I see these abilities as a way to compliment map knowledge and weapon spawn timing and add more depth to the interactions on these spawns instead of just “we shoot just shoot each other and whoever dies first gets weapon” (when a weapon has no portal walls nearby). For example, popping the time shield seconds before spawn when your alone gives you advantage, so maybe you think you can solo hold. To play around this the other team puts two on weapon knowing you would go for it and outplays your play. OR they can just see you have bubble up and not enter it/ play cover during the weapon fight. These abilities are not fight winning unless you dont respect them. Just like how in splitgate 1 smg is not gunfight winning without skill expression, and even then if the opposing team respects that you have smg they can play around it. Sorry for the essay.
"No longer just portal-ing & gunplay" Dude that's exactly what made it a good game. It was about refining your gunplay and map knowledge to place portals in strategic locations, not factions & abilities. Guess I'll be sticking with splitgate 1 to scratch my Halo with portals itch :(
Yeah, it’s a very odd choice to devalue portals in your portal-based franchise. This whole video is them talking about the “unique” abilities in pro-gamer-lingo (“I got walls”. Yeah me too girl) and occasionally saying “oh and there’s portals which might interact with your abilities sometimes I guess”.
Yep. I don't like this. You start introducing classes and abilities? Um, no. I just want good maps and good guns. That's literally it. Now they're going to have to balance all of this bullshit, and it's never going to be perfect. Talk about fixing something that wasn't broken in the first place. Not looking forward to this.
As an old school Halo fan and a big fan of how Splitgate 1 carried on that torch and carved out a niche in the market that the none of the Halos since Bungie had touched, this is hard to watch. This isn't Halo. This isn't Splitgate. This is just an extremely generic adhd addled hero shooter COD game with no semblance of what the first game was beyond the portals and aesthetic. Surely the change in direction was a financial one, maybe a small part of the mainstream audience was expected to be more profitable than the small niche you carved out for yourself with the first, but its still sad to see. RIP old school arena shooters, you were fun for a while Splitgate and you will be missed o7
I'm with you here. Chasing trends is what killed Halo originally, and this seems to be following in its footsteps. They abandoned the arena shooter genre entirely by adding hero abilities/loadouts, and in doing so killed all my interest. What does Splitgate 2 offer that I can't get in half-a-dozen other titles now? Nothing.
Completely agreed. This looks like it discards literally everything about the 1st one I liked. I don't give a shit about abilities, factions, classes, unlocks, perks, etc. All of it's just a bunch of distracting bullshit. I just want to run around and shoot dudes. Halo + portals was a stroke of genius, why get rid of that. Very disappointing to see the direction this has gone.
2:05 has me really worried, wallhack abilities are usually very poorly implemented and are never fun to fight against. I also hope the barrier shields have low health because if they have a lot I can definitely see people pushing/holding a position with every team member stacking the shields on one spot
Your just a sweat that killed the first game, relax this game seems like it going to drop with a few maps, so more are coming for high skilled players like yourself.
@@Mythreial The "selling point" is irrelevant. SG1 succeeded because the movement/gunplay was very similar to Halo, but with a faster TTK. The success of SG1 stems directly from the failure of Halo as a franchise. Dropping the portal mechanic would have been the best thing that could happen to SG1 for popularity/player retention, but now the devs are playing around with abilities trying to copy hero shooters that have already run their course. Clueless.
The one thing I’ll say I don’t love based on what I’m seeing here is that the UI looks a little too cluttered/is too big. I think the perfect example is at 3:25. When you have your teammates’ health bars taking up the entire bottom left and ammo taking up bottom right combined with a lot of stuff happening in the actual gameplay(player names, large weapons, reticle, abilities, objectives, kill/medal notifications, flashy maps) it gets a little too chaotic to me. Besides that this looks awesome
What they added: abilities and sliding… congrats, you’ve chased trends and have made your game not stand out from the competition nearly as much as it did before.
Yep. This is the same path that took Halo from a genre-defining masterpiece with millions of concurrent players to a hollow shell of its former glory. Devs just don't seem to understand chasing trends doesn't end well.
I think there's enough hero shooters out there already and the thing about the first Splitgate was that the portals in of itself were hard to master so adding this on top might just be too much.
This is looking so good, the slide mechanic is definitely what splitgate always needed to not feel clunky I am a little anxious about factions, as I personally preferred splitgate 1's simplicity, but I'm glad to see the more competitive players enjoy it (maybe a splitgate classic mode?)
Zero floor portals. Are we done flying? They've shown the player flying through that stadium level twice now without showing how he gets the speed and momentum and where he portald from.
@nathanempty you see where he comes out, you don't see the actual launch pad you drop through. Already played the alpha and the portals are no longer the centerpiece of the game. The map design is barely accommodating the inclusion of portals, all the maps feel like a black ops 3 MP map. I hope the devs take criticism to heart because veterans are not impressed with 1047 chasing trends. It feels like the jump from Titanfall 2 to Apex Legends. Claims its the same world yet everything that made it unique and special is stripped from it.
Portals are now both on one button E or RB and alternate between Purple and Yellow at one point we see it alternate without the player shooting a portal, implying there's some way to manually make that happen. Nothing is shown as to closing these portals. Not sure I like that change. and anti-portal grenades seem to be gone. There is now a slide mechanic, probably used by crouching while sprinting or otherwise moving. There is what is essentially an ultimate on Q or RB+LB for each faction, and also an ability on G or LB. We hear that these abilities are faction specific and we see Meridian have and use 2 different abilities here. At 0:40 we see hint of the load out screen, Showing that the Ultimate (called an ability here) Is part of the faction and not part of the loadout. We see something called a Team Trait, a passive that is faction based as well. In the load out we see things called "add one" and "eye for equipment" which appear to be passives. Areos Ulimate is Rush, speeding them up. They have an ability we didn't see, but is probably the deployable non-wall portal and an ability that was a Stim, healing them. Meridian's Ultimate is a wall hack. They have a time dilation field and a healing grenade as abilities Sabrask's Ultimate is a Wall Shield, it didn't seem to go on a cool down when used, but that might just be because it was currently up. Their ability is a damaging sticky Grenade , we dont see a second ability from them. Several guns are shown as well as the ability to pick up guns. A melee attack that kills in 2 hits is also shown. Of the guns shown there is: A Pistol called a "Slinger". A "Cadence" single shot Carbine, 3 shots to kill, maybe 4 without a headshot. A "Warden" Rifle of some sort. It is also shown doing single shot like the Cadence. A "Sprinter" looks like an SMG A "Quantum" is seen on the loadout page called Sniper Rifle , we see it in gameplay doing both 3 shot bursts like a battle rifle. A "Helios" Light Pistol is also seen on that loadout page, confirming there to be more than one pistol. A "Synapse" Assault Rifle. A "Plow" Shotgun. A "Blink" pistol, which is the third pistol we see. A "SplitStream" gun that splits into 2. Seems to be an SMG. It splits as soon as you switch to it. So it doesn't seem to have 2 different modes.
Pretty sure the animation at 0:55 is them closing a portal. Unless that animation corresponds to one of the class abilities, but it looks very similar to the “closing portal” animation from SG1
the addition of abilities is fine as long as they are implemented well and none are too strong, so to start just remove the wallhack related one out entirely
Hmm. I have mixed thoughts about this. It surely looks fast and somewhat fun. Also I love the UI, although there's just too much for a fast-paced game. Artistically speaking seems to have a direction and the weapons look lit. I'm sure the gunplay is as great as its predecessor. But the "portal" mechanic seems to not be a centric point of the game anymore. The factions took this role by having their own type of weapons and I'm not sure if I like the abilities. As a controller player I'm just afraid of how the button mapping works especially for the portals. We'll see... Honestly not super fun of the choices made, which may feel uninspiring in the long term, but I'll be glad to be mistaken!
looks interesting, i hope they can maintain the simplicity and visual clarity of splitgate 1. A lot of shooters now have way too much visual clutter, i liked that everything was clean and easy to see in the original splitgate
The whole video I was worried about one single thing. Because most of the gameplay clips ONLY showed small regular portal-surfaces on walls. So THANK GOD I was wrong and they showed at least 1 tiny clip right after 4:02 . Honestly having portal-surfaces not only on walls but also on ceilings and floors and tilted ones, that's what made the matches in Splitgate 1 so crazy and cool!! So I really really hope that we get not only 1 of those moments per map, but more than what we saw in this video. Other than that I'm looking forward to trying it out.
I spend a couple hundred bucks on Splitgate one until I had the visually perfect load out for me. I feel like that trust/loyalty gets punished now, if I lose everything. Especially my golden tiger skin - I really want to keep that!
It looks SO good. As a pro splitgate enjoyer with 5000+ kills, I hope this game is good. Not a huge fan of ultimates, and hopefully there aren't guns specific to factions, but whatever they do, I'll be playing it.
Haven't seen anyone else comment on this, but Splitgate 1 had some serious problems with Hitreg. At 4:21 in this video, this person we are spectating is literally shooting someone THROUGH a wall. ???
I’m super excited for this game, I just really hope the factions dont take away what made the first one so special. Just a nice simple movement shooter with portals.
I’m a person who would always cope and pray for a titanfall 2 since the arcade like shooter experience from titanfall was so amazing. Sadly never got it but this look pretty promising and reminds me of the feel that titanfall had but with its own way. Super excited for the release!!
As an OG Splitgate player, I'm gonna keep it a buck with yall. You have a GODLY opportunity to make something phenomenal here, and by the looks of it you got that in the bag. Good luck devs. Maybe, closed betas to get more people hyped up?
They are really going the overwatch route 😢 I loved the simplicity of the first one. Now you have Wallhack and heal... It's just not the same old school arena shooter feeling like the fist one had. I'm kinda disappointed 😅
So, Splitgate + Halo Infinite + XDefiant. Plenty of pros and cons there. People hate wall hack abilities in arena shooters. Glad it's not a hero shooter! I loved the first, so it's a bummer that they waited until the final seconds of this video to showcase portals and momentum.
The one thing I’m concerned about is that it felt very casual and in an age where everything has to be competitive and ultra balanced, splitgate just felt like it focused on having fun first. If I wanted to just casually play a match, I’d go to splitgate. Here’s hoping it stays as this funny party game to play with friends and not have to sweat my balls off
I feel like the focus has shifted from Portals to abilities. It looks like there's barely any spots to put portals compared to the first game having a portal location on almost any direction you looked.
The portals animations are much nicer. I'm still getting used to the class system as it's a bit different than splitgate1. But I'll reserve any judgement I have until I've gotten more used to playing.
Splitgate was one of the best shooters I've ever played. It was such a simple concept, but it was done so well. I absolutely love portaling around the maps and bamboozling my enemies. I can't wait to see how many new strategies there will be to mess with opponents and get those clips! I hope they give extra points for style. 😉
The effects, the animations, the gameplay. Smooth af and amazing But please for the love of god scale that UI down or let us disable some parts. Its so big and there is sooooo much unneeded clutter.
Personally, I am pretty sad with this... The biggest appeal about Splitgate to me is how its just a straight forward, no nonse arena shoots. We have so many hero style shooter games on the market right now
Splitgate hit so good because it didn't have special class abilities, and relied on map control, weapon spawns, and teamwork. That was literally how I sold it to my friends "it's not a class ability shooter, it's like good halo but with portals"
I love how they got around the hero shooter type deal by tying abilities to factions rather than specific characters. Gives the the way to actually customize our character which is one of my fav things to do
I REALLY hope that weapons aren't restricted to factions. The best thing about arena shooters since their inception and SG1 did this great was having weapon pickups on the map.
why would you make it a class\hero shooter, and why would you lie about it. im just confused about this discission, 1 who asked for it 2 why not just make the abilitys equipment you can find on the map ?
@@okene The only difference between the two is whether or not your playable character has a quirky name and personality. From a gameplay perspective they're literally the same thing. @@ArchDude17 yep, which makes me really anxious
Still portals. SG1 had a lot of issues but they didnt needed to make a whole new game in my opinion
They got rid of the originality of the basic game
This was supposed to be "No meta , just skills"
Gameplay looks fun as hell but why is there so much shit on the screen.... five indicators popping up every time you get a kill is ridiculous

I am a little hesitant about incorperating abilities like this to the gameplay of Splitgate but seeing it in action I recognize the potential it has. I wish all the best to the developers and for the community. With any luck this could make an even bigger splash than the first one initially did and I am excited to try it for myself.
I think a lot of the issues that would normally come up with powers are alleviated with portals.
dont worry, its just one more fps ruined by abilites while theres a ton of them already, no difference
It looks like the focus is less so on portals and more so on abilities, which personally i think is a terrible choice.
That and the grenades that actually cause damage, it was nice having a shooter that was purely movement and guns
Obviously they will still give an absurd advantage if you are good. They prolly only played for a few hours and didn’t master them
when this guy said "you can get away with not using portals" it felt a punch in the groin - he probably has been paid a ton of money to promote this game and he literally shat on the main mechanic in a gameplay overview trailer... and they kept that in?? what the actual fuck

@@BujuZiggy explain
Yeah this is what I feared..By giving players abilities, you can almost ignore the main mechanic of the game, what's the point of portaling around when you got your deployables there
What's the point of portaling when you can rush at your ennemies with an ability
This game is trying to be both an ability centered and Portal centered game at the same time idk if that's gonna work the way the devs wants it to work
The players are barely using the portals, some do but damn, i'm not even a pro and Ik i could use em alot better
theyre trying to give an overview of everything in 5 minutes, of course theyre going to use the abilities more than the portals. but any good portal player can play around the abilities and can use them to their advantage while also giving casuals a chance. a big thing in the first game that casuals died out super fast because of the skill gap between the players who played since beta and the peak. the devs just want to make the game last. it seems quite balanced to me
This is such a delusional take. Obviously portals will still be the main attraction of the game, the devs even said that. And, just think, portals will be used a lot. They’re obviously broken, so, players will be using them when they get more comfortable with the maps
This has literally been a thing since Splitgate released. You don't need to use portals on most maps to begin with.
Being very cautious, as many shooters get really bad with the concept of the "hero shooters" and abilities
I’d say it’s not exactly a hero shooter. More a loadout based shooter like Halo Reach or Titanfall 2. Those games have abilities, but neither are Hero Shooters. This seems more like that. At least from my POV anyways.
Hero shooters have every single playable character with their own abilities.
This is a class shooter, with only three factions to choose from.
if it was a hero shooter, things like weapons would be unique to each character as well as u only having one hero per team
yea its not hero shooter its like cod and halo
You’re just bad at them?
My favorite part of Splitgate was it's movement and teamwork that pushed the skill. I'm afraid adding abilities takes away from that just like they did with Halo and other games, where originally the main appeal was movement and teamwork. Good map design and movement mechanics were the basis for what made those games good. I feel like abilities are a crutch around that. I'll still try it out but I'm worried
Same feeling here
Been playing splitty since Beta Season 1.
Guess I'll be sticking with splitgate 1 to scratch my Halo with portals itch :(
This isn’t halo. And id call them perks or items like halo threes sheild bubble
@@CalebWhitekeybladeNo dude cuz they’re not neutral map pickups, they’re specific to whatever faction you pick before a game.

Missing splitgate 1, still play it. Wish sg2 had more focus on portals.
The amount of shields are going to be annoying but I guess that's why you use portals to get side angles.
dont worry shields are smart enough already to turn their sides against you lmaoo
this looks a lot more complex than the original, I am curious how that will affect the casual audience.
"It's no longer portalling gameplay" No kidding, there are barely any portal surfaces :/
Your just a sweat that killed the first game, relax this game seems like it going to drop with a few maps, so more are coming for high skilled players like yourself.
@@CalebWhitekeyblade ? I just like portals, where are you extrapolating the rest from? Did you click the wrong comment?
@@CalebWhitekeybladethe game's entire selling point is the portal mechanics; so few portal surfaces = "???"
I loved to simplicity of splitgate. Adding abilities to the game will take the simplicity away
We're beyond back
They’re literally surpassing Splitgate 1’s numbers view-wise already before even releasing a beta version. This will be big…

It definitely doesn’t look like..

What they added: abilities and sliding… congrats, you’ve chased trends and have made your game not stand out from the competition nearly as much as it did before.
Right, now it just seems like every hero shooter with a gimmick nothing special
Exactly
Yep. This is the same path that took Halo from a genre-defining masterpiece with millions of concurrent players to a hollow shell of its former glory. Devs just don't seem to understand chasing trends doesn't end well.
I am incredibly sad that they decided to give everyone abilities and shit
at least make it a good cooldown and dont reset cooldowns on death please.
I think there's enough hero shooters out there already and the thing about the first Splitgate was that the portals in of itself were hard to master so adding this on top might just be too much.
Oh man I was really hoping this wasn’t gonna become a hero shooter but I’m still cautiously optimistic.
THE DEVS ARE COOKING WITH THIS ONE
Just give us a "classic mode" and we are SET
This is looking so good, the slide mechanic is definitely what splitgate always needed to not feel clunky
I am a little anxious about factions, as I personally preferred splitgate 1's simplicity, but I'm glad to see the more competitive players enjoy it (maybe a splitgate classic mode?)
splitgate classic mode without factions sounds dope, I'd like the option to enjoy both
Jesus fucking christ, hero shooter plague is here too
In case anyone wants to play the og splitgate, it's still playable. I play it pretty much every day.
Zero floor portals. Are we done flying? They've shown the player flying through that stadium level twice now without showing how he gets the speed and momentum and where he portald from.
4:02
They have a time dilation field and a healing grenade as abilities
Sabrask's Ultimate is a Wall Shield, it didn't seem to go on a cool down when used, but that might just be because it was currently up. Their ability is a damaging sticky Grenade , we dont see a second ability from them.
Several guns are shown as well as the ability to pick up guns. A melee attack that kills in 2 hits is also shown.
Of the guns shown there is:
A Pistol called a "Slinger".
A "Cadence" single shot Carbine, 3 shots to kill, maybe 4 without a headshot.
A "Warden" Rifle of some sort. It is also shown doing single shot like the Cadence.
A "Sprinter" looks like an SMG
A "Quantum" is seen on the loadout page called Sniper Rifle , we see it in gameplay doing both 3 shot bursts like a battle rifle.
It has been confirmed that the original two-button portal setup will be available to switch to.
Pretty sure the animation at 0:55 is them closing a portal. Unless that animation corresponds to one of the class abilities, but it looks very similar to the “closing portal” animation from SG1

Other than that I'm looking forward to trying it out.
can't wait for this one to get abandoned 5 seconds after release like the first one
isnt that a normal thing in fps games?
I’ve definitely seen that kind of problem in splitgate 1 but understand that the game is still being playtested and things are still getting fixed

splitgate was really a good game i remember when i used to play with my friends i looking forward of that upgraded version
I'm a little nervous about all the abilities being thrown in, but am still eager to try.

But please for the love of god scale that UI down or let us disable some parts. Its so big and there is sooooo much unneeded clutter.
So much for your game not being a hero shooter. You’re just labeling it has factions instead lol.
Honestly those weapons and environments with the purple/pink/blue colors have such a crisp, fresh and fun vibe to them. Can't wait to play!
Personally, I am pretty sad with this... The biggest appeal about Splitgate to me is how its just a straight forward, no nonse arena shoots. We have so many hero style shooter games on the market right now

LETS GOO, Nothing hits as good as Splitgate
Splitgate hit so good because it didn't have special class abilities, and relied on map control, weapon spawns, and teamwork. That was literally how I sold it to my friends "it's not a class ability shooter, it's like good halo but with portals"
I’m SO Excited 😆 look at the graphics!!!! 3:53
I love how they got around the hero shooter type deal by tying abilities to factions rather than specific characters. Gives the the way to actually customize our character which is one of my fav things to do
Both the gameplay and art direction look like a solid step up
Why am I not invited to test, I have been in the top 10 rankings for years?
you have to dye your hair 1st, and ask for more abilities instead of portals.
I REALLY hope that weapons aren't restricted to factions. The best thing about arena shooters since their inception and SG1 did this great was having weapon pickups on the map.
why would you make it a class\hero shooter, and why would you lie about it.
im just confused about this discission, 1 who asked for it
