I think the problem that a lot of people are confusing the characters with the actors who played them. In very few cases does J K Rowling mention specific nationalities for characters, or indeed ethnicity of the characters. It is usually left to the readers' imaginations what, if any, ethnicity any specific character had. In some cases, most people would imagine most of the Hogwarts staff and students to be English. In my own mind, the only non-English Hogwarts student would be Seamus Finnegan, The Patil twins were of South Asian heritage (India/Pakistan/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka) but born and/raised in England and Cho Chang was of Chinese heritage. McGonagle suggests Scottish but I don't think JKR gave any specific clue. I think (it's a l-o-o-o--ong time since I read the books) it mentions that Lee Jordan, Dean Thomas and Angelina Johnson were black and, in my imagination, so were Alicia Spinnett and Lavender Brown and Blaize Zambini was English but of Italian heritage - I can't say that the "race swapping" of the last two caused any problems for me. The speech patterns of 99% the characters tend to be pretty similar and give no indication as to what part of the world - or indeed the British Isles - the came from. Madame Olympe Maxime 's dialogue is written so that it is obvious she is French; "Ah, M'sieur Agreed." the only other character who shows the hint of an accent is Hagrid but in my head the character's voice had a Scouse accent, not a South Western one. Neville is mentioned as being from near to Blackpool, so Matthew Lewis's accent didn't come as a surprise. The only "surprises" in the films were: Cho being Scottish although Scotland does have a Chinese community in many of its towns and cities (and Katie Leung is from Glasgow) and her accent was a pleasant one and similarly Luna's (who was, in my head when reading the books, possessed a middle-class English accent - albeit spoken in a "Dreamy" tone) soft Irish accent, just added to the character's charm - although I was less convinced by Rhys Ifans effort (now it's Irish, now its Welsh and I swear there was a bit of Robert Newton on there at one point) - Ed Byrne would have been a better choice to play Xenophilius. As I'd pointed out earlier, McGonagle suggested Scottish and it was no surprise that Maggie Smith dusted off her Miss Jean Brodie voice for the part and I did always picture Moody to be Scots rather than Irish, maybe Billy Connolly could have been persuaded to have played the part, although Brendan Gleeson was excellent. BTW for those commenting on accents of the actors playing the roles most UK actors are very good at taking on other accents - so the Essex born Maggie Smith could muster up a decent Scots accent for Professor McGonagle. Scousers Jason Isaacs and Ian Hart were able to slip into RP English accents without difficulty, and the Scottish Trio of Robbie Coltraine, David Tennant and Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle) were able to portray South Western English and middle class English accents without a problem. I lke to think Rhys Ifans was just having a bad day or two.

This is shite. 1) What's the "British or Irish"? Just because of a lack of information? If then, many characters marked as just "British" should be considered "British or Irish" instead. Besides, many of those marked as "British or Irish" are definitely not Irish, such as Justin Finch-Fletchley who's as English as can be (English preppy name+he was bound to attend Eton before learning he was a wizard. I don't think there are many Irish Etonians...) 2) The last names are good clues. Trelawney is Cornish (Cornish last name+Rowling herself said she wanted to have a character with a Cornish name), and a guy named Cormac McLaggen (both first and last names are Gaelic) would most definitely be either Irish or Scottish. 3) Most of those marked as "British" are unambiguously ENGLISH (the Potters, the Weasleys, the Malfoys, the Longbottoms, the Blacks, the Dumbledores, Hermione, Dean, Snape, Voldemort...) If you want to tell Scots and Welsh apart, then the rest is ENGLISH, not "British" (which includes the Scots and Welsh). 4) How the fuck are the Lovegoods Irish? Just because Luna's actress is? Seriously, that means nothing, if the actor's nationality was absolutely relevant, then Hagrid (English) and Wood (unknown British) would be Scottish, while McGonagall (Scottish) and Madame Maxime (French) would be English, and the Dumbledore brothers (English) would be Irish. Besides, her dad's actor is Welsh. The Lovegoods are most probably English, and live near the same Devon village as the Weasleys.
“Hugo Weasley”? I thought that would be some sort of combination or maybe a name combination of some small content creator and Ron Weasley or something… 🤔🤔🤔🤔 .

Tbh I didn’t even know Helga was welsh so at least there’s one. But honestly it makes no sense given Hogwarts being in the U.K. and thus you’d expect a fair amount from all of the countries
Funny how most of the half Irish are pretty girls or cool characters overall.
The Luna Lovegood character is British not Irish. She is just played by an Irish actress in the movies
Lovegoods were Irish. Later they moved near the Burrows

Funk fact: you didn't notice when nationalities began to change (the Hindi-British Sisters)
No because we were all focused on the top half photos
I always liked thinking that Oliver Wood is Scottish-
Dreamy draco❤❤
🐉🐉❤
It is obvious, they all speak in a British accent
It was JK request that they all be British.
Yeah 😊
Angelina has typical irish skin color
Video: Nationalities of 130+ Harry Potter Characters
I, knowing that all the actors are British due to the conditions set by J.K. Rowling, and most of the events of the saga (except for the Goblet of Fire) affect only Britain: I think I know what this video will be filled with 🤣
❤️
Brro doesn't know that "british" includes "scottish" and "irish"
Thanks buddy ❤
@@zuppymac-xi8rk i mean Northen Ireland
This is about the characters not the actors themselves; incase this is confusing to people. Maggie smith is British not Scottish for example 😂
That's right ❤️
1:01 why do you have to pick such a hot photo of reggie
This is shite.
1) What's the "British or Irish"? Just because of a lack of information? If then, many characters marked as just "British" should be considered "British or Irish" instead. Besides, many of those marked as "British or Irish" are definitely not Irish, such as Justin Finch-Fletchley who's as English as can be (English preppy name+he was bound to attend Eton before learning he was a wizard. I don't think there are many Irish Etonians...)
2) The last names are good clues.
Might have been quicker just to say who isn't British lol... Considering that was part criteria for being in the movies was they had to be from the UK
Consider the characters buddy 😊
“Hugo Weasley”? I thought that would be some sort of combination or maybe a name combination of some small content creator and Ron Weasley or something… 🤔🤔🤔🤔 .
Scottish and British are the same thing. "British" refers to Great Britain, which includes England, Scotland and Wales. I say this because I saw where one said "British or Scottish".
Who's Mattheo Riddle?
He was not mentioned in the HP series rather he is in the fandom.
@@davidsoliman530 he is just a fanfic in harry potter, he's a character from a movie named "death class" btw (maybe)
His name is more italian than french
@@justaplayer2250 yeah, wouldn't be surprising I he was italian
I thought it would happen......Scottish is British so Moody and Mcgonogol should be British too.
Well yeah 🥺
@@forpotterheads Yeah sorry I didn't mean to say it in the way you may think I'm saying it. I'm just clarifying. It's a thing with me where I always hear "British and Scottish" when people dont recognize Scotland as being British. It's mostly because I'm American and Americans tend to always associate just england with the Union Jack and all things that are "British".
Victor Krum is the best❤Forever Bulgaria ❤❤❤
Remember kids, Scotland does have its own flag and it is a different country than England.
