    Looks really interesting. Even as an engineer, with hands on DSP software development experience, I've been resistant to these boxes for a long time, due to the UI, the menu-under-menu thing that all the 80's era synths had. The test for me, is if I haven't played it in a year, can I still remember how to navigate the controls and get the sound I want, without breaking out a manual.

      The ToneX couldn't be simpler. Just pick a profile you like. Most amps have a sweet spot, and most profiles are in the sweet spot. The EQ is post, so you can boost or cut bass mids or treble if you want, but it doesn't actually change the knobs on the amp.

    • @chipsawdust5816
      @chipsawdust5816 6 місяців тому

      @@JacksonAxe I'm gonna be 66 next year and have some gear that timed out 10-15 years ago but damn some of this new stuff is good. And keeps getting better. Too bad when my lead guitarist died the band fell apart but I'm slowly getting back into it and although I can't scratch $400 tougher for this pedal, there's a ton of software out there that won't age out on me as fast as some of the digital boxes I've bought in the past.
      The thing about the ToneX as opposed to some others is it has a really involved community of support. Not like M-Audio or Genesis and so on. So it might be a good investment.

    I am amazed how close the ToneX gets at a fraction of the price of a Kemper or QC. Obviously it does not have all the other effects those others systems do, but if all you want is great amp captures in a small foot pedal, and don’t need the extra effects, it’s a no brainer at $1500 less.

    I don't know what it is, but there's usually a certain lower mid or high bass frequency that these modelers seem to be missing from a real amp. In this demo I heard it as lack of bass in the Tonex. I can hear it in this demo and I know I could hear it in most of the demos I have heard online with blind AB tests for modelers and tube amps. I am not sure it matters since I think those frequencies tend to get removed in a mix. Overall, the Tonex seems to be killing other products like the kemper which I think cost like $2k?

    For the most part, regardless of differences, most audiences wouldn't notice or care what was being used. The "acceptable" tonal spectrum, is so massive, that it'd take a painful extreme for most listeners to even comment on a one, much less be turned off by it. Some artists have even been praised for pushing the boundaries of "acceptable" into "sterilizing frogs and driving away insects" tonality (Jack White?). This is further complicated by which system the listener is using to play back said recording. I was listening to some old recordings that I thought I knew backwards and forwards, through some Martin and Logan ESL electrostatic speakers. And the clarity was such that there were times I could identify the amp and probably the speaker, not to mention the room it was recorded in. Most systems won't give you that much detail even if that detail is still hiding in the recordings. Beyond the tone, there's still that elusive visceral quality, that isn't easy to adequately verbalize. Which is where I find most modeling amps lacking.

    Can you load additional software into a ToneX. For example, can one loan the IK Multimedia AmpliTube Joe Satriani Collection Software Suite into this?

    Way to go Tim, now they're going to take your advice and when I go to buy one it WILL be twice as much. As always, another informative, interesting, and entertaining video.

    The tone-x vs. Marshall critique was straight-up. Can't beat the Marshall 68 break+up but tone-x clean was IMO very close or slightly better?

    I feel like I'm hearing an extra harmonic layer in the Plexi that's missing from the Tonex, but of course in a band mix you'd never know the difference. They're very close.

    I’ve used the POD for years to save time in the studio. I’d love to upgrade to the ToneX
