Hey, they actually still do Scholastic Book Fairs to this day, at my middle school they had copies of the Shonen Jump Magazine in the manga section, and they usually came with a whole bunch of Yugioh cards, mostly crappy normal monsters and shit like Sakuretsu Armor, but they also had an Obelisk the Tormentor. Of course, I also had a shonen jump subscription in middle school which is how I got cards like Altergeist and Trickstar links (that I couldn't use) but also stuff like Galaxy Eyes Cipher Blade Dragon and Summon Sorceress which I would use at the lunch table to kick my friends asses alongside Scarlight Red Dragon Archfiend and REDMD
Reminds me of Gishki Spright. If you don’t remember, this was back at the tail end of Tear format, when Gishki support was announced to come out in Photon Hypernova, namely Gishki Grimness, Focused Aquamirror, and Evigishki Neremanas, and was a hot new way to play Spright. I remember me and my friend deck building and playtesting together with Gishki Spright in preparation for this deck’s release. Photon Hypernova came out on February 10th, but… the banlist announcement happened and not only was Kitkallos famously banned on that list, so was the cornerstone of what made the Gishki Spright deck work in the first place: Spright Elf. I remember being so devastated because I spent so much on a Spright core just to play Gishki Spright. But despite the set coming out on the 10th and the banlist would go into effect on the 13th, there weren’t any regionals or anything I went to that weekend (not sure if there was one anyway), so I took Gishki Spright to locals for the first and last time. And got second place. Man… Gishki Spright to me was the greatest deck that never was that I had played.
Jump promos used to be legal to play from the moment you got them. This changed in 2007 with the release of E-HERO Stratos. Airblade Turbo was legal for about a week
The level eater ban still makes me sad, even if it was needed. It was the king of jank for alot of decks. I used to use it to summon Chaos Goddess in a Fabled/Dark World deck with it. After it's ban, summoning Chaos Goddess became basically impossible.
This feels like the quality content we're kinda lacking for yugioh right now. Would love to hear more on random historic yugioh topics like yugioh-online and stuff, I played a ton of it and it's funny how a lot of people just didn't know anything about it.
Hearing XBC Torna's battle theme in this video is sending me. Not a complaint, that song kicks ass, but also not at all what I expected to hear in this video
I was at the rosemont event I faced one level eater linkuriboh deck against my blue-eyes deck I had one copy of man eater bug in my deck you know for just in case situations and he didn’t really do anything on his first turn just one linkuriboh in his field. I set my man eater bug on my first turn and he decided to attack to attack with his linkuriboh on his next turn and flipped my man eater bug up activating its effect destroying his linkuriboh and he surrendered right then and there! One of the most underwhelming duels I’ve ever been a part of!
What I love the most about this video is the fact that even someone who knows almost nothing about Ygo will understand the story told, and even why everything happened. Great work!!
I REALLY like this type of content. I love Yugioh discussion videos and they're has been a huge hole left from Doug only doing draft series now. Please make more of these!
I was just thinking about how I wish you made more videos like this and then you made this so I guess please make more? You have excellent skill as an orator PS: I love that you used Charlemagne, aka Emperor Charles the Great as the example of what a "balanced" link 1 is supposed to be - a monster I would probably consider the strongest individual monster in the game in a vacuum.
These videos are way too good for this channel. Imagine being a new viewer, loving this style of video, then checking the channel page and seeing its walls of twitch highlights, while all the good similar stuff is buried in the “other videos” playlist. More of this style of video would go a long way.
I was actually at the charlotte regional during this small timeframe playing a whack draco/zoo deck that was set on making bagooska+masterpiece. During my like round 4 or so at like X/1 (you'll have to forgive me for not remembering the exact round and score it's been a while) I did end up playing vs the darklord version of this deck. From what I can recall I ended up going to game 3 with them after winning the die roll? Notably having the ability to just fall back on summoning masterpiece after getting extra linked definitely helped and I ended up winning. It's hard to recall any real specifics of the match though since it has been so long. But I can say I did play against the deck and immediately afterwards played vs exclusively pendulum and spyral the rest of the event.
I love hearing about the history of what I missed while I was on my extended break. I love this game too much to ever quit again, but back when I was in college and before I had a driver's license, I left the game and now that I think about it, it was because I found a D&D group online. Now that I have a job, a car, and a locals I can make the time for, I can and have been playing YGO for about a year and a half, while entering my 9th year of Tabletops with my crew.
My experience with Yu-Gi-Oh is only at the video game level but I think this is similar to the current theme chronicle event in MD, people were scared that rikka sunavalon was going to be tier zero, but I haven't seen it once, instead most people are just playing the lightsworn loaner deck, and playing it badly for the most part.
Yeah most of what i've seen is either Lightsworn or 55 card 9 card extra deck little timmy who clicked the wrong format. I'm on Dragonmaid with the new LaDD stuff myself.
As someone who primarily plays Master Duel it's still so funny to me that we have Kitkallos and Spright Elf, two huge powerhouse cards that have been banned everywhere and we just kinda get to have them still and they're kind of more or less fine? Weird how things can happen sometimes.
I attended a regional in Australia that weekend (ie somewhere there was no Linkuriboh) and it was absolutely dominated by Pendulum (the only weekend 3 Double Iris + Electrumite was legal) Sypral and True Draco. I was narrowly out of High School at the time and was already a dedicated Pendulum player and had managed to pull an Electrumite during Sneak Peek the weekend prior. Ended up coming 9th, narrowly missing Top Cut due to tie breakers. If wanting to discuss unrealized formats, I would recommend looking into the first weekend of Dimension of Chaos being legal. Dark Destroyer had just come out and dominated YCS San Jose but the rest of the topping decks were the last hurrah of the Duelist Alliance era before the ban list fully neutered them. I've always felt like it was one of those legacy formats that could rival Edison in terms of deck choices.
Level eater did not have a good format but that card can *never* come back or Diabolantis send Level Eater will be a mainstay play in every deck capable of making an 8.
I can like all non tier 0 formats before pote, but post-pote card design produces too many tier 0 and/or uninteractable bs. I have to do some leaps of logic to try and like post-pote formats
I’ve only ever judged one regional and it was this weekend. I can unfortunately confirm that I don’t remember seeing any of these decks at the Rosemont regional. I do remember that the dark Spyral deck using gofu, arma knight, and draco sack came in second
The summon spam is massively stifled because Linkuriboh can't use Level Eater to revive itself, since LE can't be tributed except for a tribute summon.
There was a last card standing on farfas channel i dont remember which one but It showed how much level eater can do. There was a guy who just with a ONE normal summon that was Mo Ye made diabolantis that send level eater to GY and one was Full combo that in think did u-linked and much much more.
3:30 fissile material is used in fission (splitting the atom, atomic decay). The polar opposite of any sort of (cold) fusion. I know it's just wordslop to pad the script, but it genuinely annoyed me a bit.
I really like this kind of video. This scripted analysis of something so out of left field is tight and interesting. I also know the following feedback is supposed to be unrelated but I did wonder if a Twitter thread related to this would bring up anything else cool. I do miss the Twitter Threads but that doesn't at all mean that I want to see this style of video be killed for them.
I played this deck for 2 locals (kaiju ftk no extra linking just ftk with cowboy or the rank 9 that stripped a card from hand and deck each iteration). All were 2 card ftks, via grepher, arma, or vyon + other different extenders respectively. First local I think I won, second I messed up the ftk sequence and lost since zone placement mattered and I summoned incorrect zone. Deck was fine but extremely boring, if played at a premier event could easily chew 40 minutes for game 1 like gishki ftk was designed for and folded to a single cherries. Cool to see this concept get a video though!
Sometimes it made me wonder how good unsearchable theoritical power cards like level eater and grinder golem would do in modern yugioh They both requires so much extra deck spot that most decks can't afford to slot in as a power card while being wholly unsearchable Maybe you can abuse it with Piri Reis map and the platitude of generic lv1 spells?
off the title alone i thought he was gonna talk about the brief window dark matter was playable before it got banned thanks to dragon rulers then again dragon rulers were already doing their thing before dark matter so yeah lol
Wait, I thought synchro spam featuring trish and omega was what got level eater banned? How was it not continuously problematic after that point? Oh the 72 hour period was just like the recent Makyura the destructor situation when it was due to get an errata.
Edison player here - So if Linkuriboh and Level Eater were both legal at the same time with modern link monsters and all cards were easily available would the deck be a lot better? I guess Master Rule 5 makes extra linking matter much less, but presumably it could put up some actually insane link boards?
Hey Dire, you think you can be sneaky? You think you can put Wind God Girl as background music for this video without anybody noticing your good taste?
PLEASE make more of this pre-scripted content. its really top notch and is perfect for your style of showmanship
Agreed
God pleaaassseeeee
Big money for Dire if he does these regularly.
He's stated that's one of his goals this year!
I agree
I love how angry Doug looks for a brief second when MBT says “so you fucking sucked with F.A.’s”
Joseph please make more documentary style videos, they're outstanding

you NAILED this style of video and i'm excited to see more of them!! and huge props to dire's editing too

This deck is a pretty decent rogue option in MD, but if Elf gets banned it immediately dies.
So many cool decks died with elf’s passing😂
@ in tcg, elf killed spright, link runick, runick fur hire, my cool earth machine build with recycler, and the aforementioned deck
I play gishiki spright in MD. Didn't even think it would be that popular but the 2 go together so well especially with a little bit of frogs too.
I’d probably play Gishki Spright if I still played MD lol
Jump promos used to be legal to play from the moment you got them. This changed in 2007 with the release of E-HERO Stratos. Airblade Turbo was legal for about a week

For the amount of cold fusion archetypes can do i am surprised there isn’t one based on it thematically.

Wait that's Touhou music

Nah, I like the idea of having these obscenely broken combos legal for like a weekend
