True. But respect has to be given to Hakeem because not only did he hype the crowd but he didn't stoop low. He could've destroyed her by talking about her dad and so on but he didn't. He spoke truth on who he is and his status. I honestly think he deserved the win. Freda's disses were good but Hakeem had style and good rhythms and that's why he won the crowd.

I think people missed the whole reason why Hakeem won the battle. Jamal told Hakeem that basically Freda would win because she's better with the disses, but Hakeem was better with being an entertainer and getting the crowd hyped up, which is exactly what he did and why they chose him.

This is Empire at its best. Yes I did enjoy the drama and the plot twist but my favorite thing about the show was the music.
For those wondering why Freda didn't win, the winner was determined by the audience. Earlier in the episode, Jamal told Hakeem that he couldn't beat Freda in a legit rap battle since she was way more talented, but that he had a chance of beating her if he could make himself the crowd favorite; in other words, have the crowd crown him the winner even if Freda's bars were better.

If this was just a rap battle with established rules of how it would be judged, then yes. Freda would have won, but it wasn't. It was an exhibition to determine who would take the last name of Lyon, and move forward with the company. Freda's strength is battle rap, while Hakeem's is showmanship. He used his skills to win over the crowd, and that's the most important part. What good is all of that clever lyricism if nobody cares enough to listen? You need to get the crowd's attention, then floor them with your talent. Plenty of talented people in the world that will never make it to the big time just because nobody knows who they are.
