This is actually really cool to see how similar the kit you guys get issued to what we get in the UK, the key differences being the firearms in cars of course and the chain link handcuffs. We have rigid bars and they’re great. I can’t believe how similar all your forms and things you carry are as well. Cool to see!
Didn't know all Frontline police vehicles carry a pair of Bushmaster and Glock firearms in the boot. This is well presented, shows a welcoming, positive image of the Nz police, should definitely see an increase in new recruits. On a different note, the rugby player that's a lock in the Black Ferns, who's also a Constable. She's attractive. A possible romantic match one day?
@OceanBlue NZ cops keep the handguns in the passenger footwell and will mount them onto their duty belt if judged to be necessary for a particular job. Due to strict gun control laws in NZ and the use of non lethal deterrents (taser, OC spray, baton etc) the NZ police do not routinely carry a handgun on their hip but will make use of the bushmaster and glock firearms if a given situation calls for a firearm to be deployed. This is strictly controlled and officers must notify their senior officer if they decide to carry a firearm and must justify the reason for doing so. As far as I'm aware the only exceptions to this (other than AOS and STG) is the the diplomatic protection squad and officers who patrol an international airport.
Hey Johnny maybe it wasnt such a good idea showing everyone exactly where in the vehicle you keep your firearms! Might become the target of some opportunist theifs.

I'm in the UK and I agree! It's funny how this video is about NZ but kinda makes me want to join our UK police haha. Although, I bet even in NZ the job isn't as cheery as this guy makes it seem! Personally, I think that the UK should adopt the NZ model of frontline armed policing but maintain our current armed-police units as well. It makes so much sense to me that frontline officers have access to at least a handgun but the fact they don't have to carry it on them all the time is great. Allows for that "gun-free" community policing model whilst allowing officers to prepare if headed to, say, a person with a knife etc
Constable Hurn said: You can ask some question. My question is, ARE YOU SINGLE!?!?!? That was actually a joke but i bet girls ask that question but i actually adore you as a handsome cop :)

Love that your duty belt is attached to the vest. Its probably easier to manage the weight of the gear. Also like the steering wheel siren and lights control. Thanks for the vid.

A very well presented and compiled video. After 39 years police service in the UK mostly as a Serious Crash investigator on the Motorway this was refreshing to watch. It is by explaining the vehicles and uniforms in a simple manner and positive attitude the public show respect. When I visit NZ the officers always are cheerful and professional. No messing about. Well done brilliant video and well explained equipment. If not already covered elsewhere maybe to assist the public a demonstration of the in car speed detection system. Here in UK we have had many VASCAR, Police Pilot, TSS UK etc. Demonstrating this equipment and how it works just may get drivers to slow down keep to the limits and save lives. the Traffic Officers Motto “Drive To Arrive, NOT BECOME A STATISTIC.”

I'm curious about your ammunition situation. I noticed that you carry four firearms in your vehicle, yet I never saw any magazine holders in the safe or on your person for either the pistols or the rifles. Are there holders for extra ammunition that you either put on the belt or carry on a bag when you need your firearm, or do you just rely on one magazine and grab a second weapon when you run out of ammunition. Also, I was curious, as I am an American, as to whether most officers opt to carry or remain unarmed if they are patrolling on foot or working as security for an event.
They can't `opt to carry`. If the situation warrants using firearms they'll get the all clear to bring them out. It's very rare to see armed police in NZ. Because policing isn't all about carry a gun, that's an outdated American concept and why US police are involved in so many shootings compared to other Western nations. Not that they don't need guns but guns aren't glorified at every turn like you see a lot on the US.
