  • Sometimes, there is nothing quite like a good old B-movie. Maybe the production values aren’t the best, and maybe the story is grittier than most, but these little gems have provided hours of viewing pleasure to so many. These films also had great leading men in them. Studly, sturdy, reliable actors who might not be GARY COOPER or CARY GRANT or CLARK GABLE, but were handsome and talented and knew how to beat up the bad guys and win over the lovely leading lady. As an homage to the leading men of the Bs, this week, we’ll take a look at the lives and careers of five of our favorites.

I love hearing about these mostly forgotten performers. Fortunately, film (as long as it is preserved) lives forever. And thank you for naming me the "listener of the week". I now don't need to make any higher achievement.

I am, and have long been, a John Hodiak fan. I loved Somewhere in the Night so much that I have a DVD of it and watch it all the time. I also have a copy of Battleground. Both great films.

Thanks for the nice message. I agree, Hodiak was a great leading man. I just recently discovered "Somewhere In The Night" and just love it. So underrated!

Easily the best film study video series on the Internet. Whether you are a serious film student or just a plain old fan of the Golden Age, nothing else comes close to FBTHS.

I remember my mom watching the Dialing For Dollars show periodically when I was growing up. Never got the phone call😐
I must guiltily admit, that the first time I saw Robert Cummings was in Beach Party and my second was in My Geisha. What can I say, I love campy movies.

OMG, I so remember “Dialing for Dollars”….and I never got a call either!😂😂😂 Loved these gems!!! Then, on Saturday afternoons, I would wait for great films like Tarzan, Shirley Temple, Andy Hardy, etc. What great memories!!

Sad to say that Robert Cummings was a patient of the notorious Dr Max Jacobson(methamphetamine fixer).... so for him, it was much more physically and mentally damaging to him than pep pills. It was shame for he did take great care of himself before he got involved with "Dr Feelgood". Such a talented person... I love this podcast and all of these actors are among my favorites. Thanks

Your co-host Nan is too young to know it, but in Mn., we had the Mel Jass Matinee movie on WTCN 11, weekdays at 1pm. I remember many times leaving school very early just to go home to watch it. I also grew up watching and loving the Maria Montez films, Tarzan movies, etc. My movie watching has not changed much either as I still watch mostly 40's and 50's movies and never watch anything remotely current (post 1970).

Thanks for the great message. Nan loves you for calling her "too young." :-) Those Tarzan and Adventure films on Saturday afternoon were the BEST! i agree -- if Maria Montez and Jon Hall were in it, I was gonna watch it! Thank you for listening. We're glad you are with us!

I grew up in that era of WTCN. It introduced me to a world of movies and TV I still love.

Hi Martha. Thanks for the message. I love Conrad Veidt. I will add him to our on-going list of potential future episodes. Great suggestion. I love him in "Rasputin, Demon with Women" (1930). Plus, he's really fun later in his career as the cult leader in "Whistling in The Dark" (1941), with Red Skelton and Ann Rutherford! 🙂

Dorothy Dandridge, & Lena Horne could never pass for White. Horne could pass for Hispanic. ( An Afro-Hispanic.)
