So pleased to have found this clip. I was lucky enough to be in the audience that night at the Verbier Festival. It was absolutely fabulous and this has just brought it all back.
Way more exciting drama than most renditions of 'Giovanni' I've seen and the three bases lend a very dark ambiance to the final confrontation and dragging Giovanni into hell. I don't give a rip about Quastoff's size, he more than compensates with a huge voice, full of emotion and color. Bravo to the entire production!
What a lineup of dark male voices! This interesting presentation was previously unknown to me. All three voices when singing together are delineated superbly here.
My God! How can you say he hasn't the voice for the Comendatore? The man may be small but by God, he has the the voice, the tone and the power for the part. And for the performance of all three Bass-Baritones, this finale of Mozart's beats anything three tenors can ever come up with. At any period of music. Long live the Bass singers-they beat tenors any time.
@@grahamnancledra7036 nua-cam.com/video/tFFyjSkJ2rY/v-deo.html Il Commendatore should be sung by a true bass voice, not a lirical (bass-)baritone. It just does not fit.
Uuh, dear Thomas, the text at 02:19 should be "non SI PASCE di cibo mortale" and not "non sia pace di cibo...". Well, this may happen. You're an amazing singer and personality anyway. I simply adore many of your performances. Love, A. from Uri, Switzerland
Mr. Quasthoff is a bass-baritone ... an unusual choice for a Commendatore because that means Don Giovanni ends up with a heavier voice in this case ... BUT, somehow it still works, because Mr. Quasthoff is strong enough in voice to be commanding ... an EXCEPTION to the rule that the role does require a a basso profundo ... an occasional exception is excusable!

Wonderful and terrific interpretation! The voices are sublime! Very great Thomas Quasthoff!
Such a marvelous blend of dark voices. One of the finest renditions of this scene ever.

Thank you for remarking that both Quasthoff and Terfel were born on a ninth of November - the day the Berlin Wall fell.

Quasthoff aint got the voice for a comendatore but he sings it very powerfull
I think he is the only one who has.

@@Francescomedardo I'm with you, it feels like a wasted opportunity to have Pape singing Leporello and not Il Commendatore.
Riveting!
zwei von ihnen haben bereits Wotan gesungen. Vom dritten wünschte ich es!

the gnome appearing really gave me whiplash
The verb is ‘pasce’, not ‘pace’. Quasthoff is not well prepared and the voice is not dark enough for this part.
