thanks a lot! This made my rasgueado instantly good. You showed greatly how the hand should rotate. Apparently it's still OK for knuckles to point downwards in the end of the strum, so the arm itself is what rotates. Also, great that you mentioned how we shouldn't practice slowly with separate clumsy strokes like they teach you sometimes, had been doing that and no wonder I didn't manage to make this smooth.
This is the best lesson I’ve seen on rasgueado. The reason for this is that I’ve been trying it with three fingers. Two fingers is great for beginners. Cheers.
Thank you for this tutorial Jose. I have always used paip rasgueo but love the clarity and attack of the pmpp rasgueo. I was never happy with my sound, but I picked up a few solid pointers from your video that I am sure will make an improvement. Love the journey...thank you for sharing! 🙏
You're a genius! I tried so many techniques and non of them helped in building speed. But after watching this short video I realized that I've been doing it wrong all of the time. They key for me was when you mentioned that the arm/wrist is the one that should do the second down strumming! That worked like a charm and I was able to build speed immediately after few tries.. Thank you!
Excellent lesson! I wish all teachers taught this way. I've been flirting with this technique off and on as a musician for years, but have yet to find a lesson featuring this amazing technique explained and presented as well as it was explained and presented here! Very exciting and well worth the practice. I have been playing/teaching pro for 33 + years as a fingerstylist and in my humble opinion, I really think the rasquiado techniques plural, is a must to add to ones arsenal of fingerstyle techniques. Well done my friend. Looking forward to more! Peace.
Thanks so much, I've been playing guitar 1 year now and this has been a focus in the background since the start. As many other comments mention, your advice of it being one fluid motion even while practicing was spot on. The penny dropped straight away and I was able to match full speed in the video in 20 minutes, Amazing!! Seems I'd already built up the wrist speed in other exercises so that's all I was missing! Appreciate the lesson💫
Konnichiwa maestro!! Great to see your tutorials! Subarashii setsumei !! Oseiwa ... I know your fame from Tokyo, I have seen you at many performances since long ago! I came to Japan in 1985 ! Was, am a big flamenco aficionado , started playing again from square one. Your playing inspires my practicing ! My Conde guitar has wooden pegs - not easy to keep it in tune! ... Big arigatou ! GV
Wow! I usually play blues or jazz, so flamenco is very foreign to me, but I wanted to start learning this technique. With this video I got it to feel and sound right in like 45 minutes! Although I'll still need to practice to get it fast (duh), this was an awesome lesson!! Thank you so much!
Master jose, some of us students have problem areas in Abanico , While approaching the third beat in fast tempo our thumb sometimes hooks in between , what shall we do ?
Excelent video! Thanks! I would like you to also show us what Antonio Rey showed you about how to practice technique :D picado for example :) How to practice picadooooooooooooooo by Antonio ??? :) Alzapua? Rasgueados? Thank you!
Hello, I found this tutorial really helpful, thanks a lot ! btw, what is the name of the etude or chord progression you mention at 8:41 ? It would love to deep dive more into it :)
Maybe you need to relax more. Practice the thumb downstroke only until it feels smooth. Then try the abanico. Everyone has different thumb shapes. When your thumb is not relaxed the thumb may hook.
third advice is really critical to me . I was really strugglng to learn this technique , but I'll try this again. but is this normal thing to break the thumb nails when I play rasguqado? Is this possible to play this without nails? Is this normal te feeling of tingling on wrist when I practice rasguqado?
If you do it correctly, you should not break nail or feel tingling. It's hard without seeing how you actually do it but if you are doing this correctly and still feel tingling, you should see hand doctor or physician etc.
Jose Tanaka Thank you so much for this video . Will this possible to be learned by online lessons ? Majority of flamenco technique is big challenge to me .
Mikearch2525 my videos at online lesson site are old but I’m going to add lots of new videos. I’ll keep you guys posted. I highly recommend privates or Skype so I or instructors can give you corrections for techniques.
Jose Tanaka ;) I started practising the day before yesterday, and didnt do so well since then. I was worried of being untalented. Thats ok then. I will keep it up till I get where I want to be. Thank you sir for the kind answer.
Funny thing is that I can do it over the fretboard but I just can't get it over te soundhole, I always get caught in the strings, how can I overcome this.
Mr. Tanaka has magical outward curving thumbs. I’m going to start doing thumb push-ups like Bruce Lee until the bend backwards like Master Tanaka. So jealous!
why is my thumb allways going in bewteen the snares??? its soo frustrating for me that when i do all with thumb they always go in the snares.any tips for that?
Hi Jose, for some reason Abanico is giving me a LOT of problem. I'm following the steps like wrist rotation and all, but the thumb gets stuck on the downstroke. I've been very frustrated and just want to bang my head on the wall
No fair! Your thumb curves backwards! My thumb is so straight and ridged it just gets stuck in between the strings! I think you should point out the differences in thumb joints and the advantages or disadvantages. I’ve tried so many times to practice this technique but just can’t get it. Other types of strumming I can do just fine but this one makes me wanna punch the wall!🤣🤨 every time I try I look like I have Parkinson’s and it sounds terrible.🤣🤣🤣 help!
Very slick the villa lobos at the end!
Even stoned the video is one of the best.
thank you very much , I've seen lots of tutorials for this technique . no one ever explain it as good as you

Thanks! I've been working on these Rasgueado's and also in the classical world the Villa Lobos Etude, so it was fun to see them combined at the end!
Pretty good lesson. I've been playing as amateur guitarrist for many years and your suggestions still helped me in some aspects

OK
after watching some 40+ videos on rasqueado I found this one *the only* useful.
so many thanks, Jose!
Thanks 😊
Gracias, yo siempre lo hacia con el medio y el anular al mismo tiempo y no sabía por que le sonaba diferente a Antonio Rey por ejemplo

Oleeee! José. Gracias...
Perfect lesson👏👏👏 Do you will teach tremelo Technic also?
Heitor Villa Lobos etiude 1
Chords at the end are from that piece 💪
Great video! Would love to see you do more rasgueado videos. :0)
Will do!
Here after gratitude 😍
Thank you. I need to know the differnce between Rasgueado and Triplets. Please elaborate.

Hello, I found this tutorial really helpful, thanks a lot !
btw, what is the name of the etude or chord progression you mention at 8:41 ? It would love to deep dive more into it :)
I used chord progression from “villa-lobos Etude in E minor”. Original is not only great arpeggio exercise but it is also a beautiful piece.
Excellent lesson! Thanks! But how do you touch the strings on the downstroke, with your fingernail or flesh?
Both
Olé! Losing weight, José? Esaaaaaaaa! :)
Lost 65lb so far. going to loose 10lb more :)
👏👏👏👏👏👋👍
Thank for rotation! My english bad....
This is very difficult . So quickly ! ! Great problem for me ! 😢 😩 😭
Just practice slowly step by step. Make sure that your form is correct. Be patient and you will get it!
@@josetanaka i'm learning flamenco 2 month. I love this.Im know litle golpe end rasquerado.Best regards in Polen 🙌
Anybody know some popular songs to practice this with?

Same happena

@@blender1188 thanks for the input, I'll apply your advice
hi , do we need to strum all the 6 strings in every stroke?
No. It depends. But I recommend practicing it without playing 6 string as I mentioned in video.

i also dont understand how im supposed to stroke my thumb down without getting stuck with the nail
Is work for acoustic guitar or what
I don't have nylon string guitar
You can do this for acoustic. However you can easily damage your nail doing this on acoustic so you have to be careful.
I have nails on my left hand do I have to cut them???
Yes I recommend you to cut your left hand nails short so they won’t get in the way.
I don't play much with fingers but I want to learn how to do rasgueado. Is it ok if I practise only in rasgueado for 1 or 2 hours a day?
Absolutely!
How long do you think it takes to do it propely?
It totally depends. Some people get it in 2 weeks and some people takes a couple of years.
Jose Tanaka ;) I started practising the day before yesterday, and didnt do so well since then. I was worried of being untalented. Thats ok then. I will keep it up till I get where I want to be. Thank you sir for the kind answer.
The most important thing is that beginners should learn proper techniques etc. Speed should be secondary.
Jose Tanaka thank you sir, appreciated your time
Funny thing is that I can do it over the fretboard but I just can't get it over te soundhole, I always get caught in the strings, how can I overcome this.
I"ll be making more tutorials!

Try to play lighter. Less deep. Experiment different angles.
