It is incredible to see how the feminine and masculine mentality stands out when prioritizing the elements of travel. Women are more concerned with health care and personal well-being, while men are concerned with tools and technical issues. It is beautiful to see this couple working as a team.

Lee Robinson She views her clothing and other items as tools. I don’t know if you noticed that or not. And his interest in the different tools he carries is for their personal well-being, not because he is some overly manly guy obsessed with tools. I’ve watched their other episodes, there is no huge difference in their mentality as a result of gender. It is subtle for them. There are a lot of other couples who have UA-cam videos where the difference is pretty drastic. This is not one of those cases in my opinion. But we all see things differently.

    • @leerobinson8709
      @leerobinson8709 4 роки тому +3

@@adamh7947 Overly manly? No one is suggesting that he is an egotistical man warrior. But in anthropological studies females tend to consider health whereas men tend to consider tools. This is in no way derogatory to any gender. If it is an consolation i thought the differences were subtle as well but agreed they were there. As with Gonzalo i thought it was a beautiful collaboration...

    - If you had to start all over again, BUT with your current experience, what would you change ?
    - Would you consider reducing your transport weight by removing some things, or do you think you have already squeezed it to the essentials ?

I don't think that I have ever been so deeply impressed with an equipment list as I am with yours, specifically your spares, specific repair kits, tools, water storage, water purification, cooking and electricity generation!
You have created the most professional back up system that it's possible to have with you on bicycles.
Your selection ensures that you truly are self sufficient in virtually everything to do with your tour.
Being sufficiently equipped for a journey like yours isn't compatible with 'lightweight' and everything that you've done is centered on reliability, repairable, maintainable, in short everything you need whenever and wherever you need it.
You are literally prepared for any eventuality!

Your sealant and tyre repair glue also make good emergency firestarters (test the sealant, but tyre repair glue usually burns very well)
The warning labels and symbols usually tell you if they burn and you can squeeze out just the right amount, more for wet days, less for dry days.
Buy tyre glue from car tyre repair shops anywhere in Africa but you need a small screwtop pot for it because they normally use/sell large tubes. You can maybe make an offer for a nearly empty tube.
You don't want the white rim sealant that the put on with a brush or around the valve, you need the clear or coloured glue they put plugs plugs in with or glue patches on with. If it stinks and gives you headache that's usually perfect :)
At a car tyre repair shop make the universal international sign for a tyre plug - stick your middle finger out downwards while you pretend to push into a tyre and rotate your hand. They use a T-handle spike tool to clean the hole out with this motion before fitting the plug so everyone will recognise it.
In arabic or maybe swahili areas you can ask for "alghara' 'iislah al'iitarat". Portuguese "cola para reparação de pneus". Afrikaans "gom vir bandherstel". French "colle de réparation de pneu"
A cheap source for tiny tubes may be those small tyre repair kits (the ones that serious cyclists don't buy haha)
Latex-based "impact" or "contact" adhesive like the industrial Evo-stick 528 (colour - light brown)usually burns quite well too - so watch out for it around shoe makers and shoe repair shops - very gummy adhesive they hammer rubber soles on with. It smells of petroleum and goes stringy as it dries. Again, you need a small tight-lid pot for it and it will eventually dry in the pot so this is a short-term option for glue or fire-starter.

You certainly are testing the limits of all that gear. It seemed to be a trend that much of the lightest gear did not pass the test of time. The gear gets heavier when it has to endure conditions and time. Ride safe and enjoy your trip. Hopefully you manage to store the contents of those failing hard drives to google drive or something before it is too late... several terabytes takes quite some time to upload and money to store though.

    • @NomadsTrails

And thanks for your concern about the files, everything is now backed up and we are not using the LaCie drives anymore 😊We have thought about backing up on a cloud service, but as you say it takes some time to upload and we don't have fast internet that often 😅But would be an idea to upload some selected files on drive 🤔

What an impressive and fun video. As a casual bike tourer, what struck me was the familiarity with each piece of equipment and its specific location on the bike. Clearly a system that has evolved based on needs and experience. Love the breadth of repair equipment, both bike-focused and otherwise. It's easy to ridicule, but until you have know the terror of a remote breakdown, you can't understand the value of carrying such gear. A little surprised by the lame lock, but maybe this speaks to the safety of areas being visited. Final thought: you guys need a drone!

Great, love following your journey. An idea for drying out your folding water containers, insert a ballon/condom and part inflate..you could use the fire tube for this, tie the end and attach thread so you can pull out, leave over night..not tried this but think it may help to dry out the inside, by getting something inside to seperate the sides.

Payman you forgot to mention one of the uses of the selfie stick.
It was nice to use on stray dogs when they chased u 😂😂

😂😂Very good point, who knows where we would be today if we didn't have the stick to scare off the dogs 😅

Hey guys, whenever you can order this, I would suggest a water filter called 'Survivor Filter Pro X'. It does use batteries, like the SteriPen, but it can also be recharged via USB. It actually comes with an optional solar battery pack. The most important thing though is that it's the only compact filter on the market which filters down to 0.01 microns which means it eliminates a lot of known waterborne viruses like Typhoid.

That seems like a lot to take until you remember that's all your possessions and the time you plan to be away. Hills must be a challenge though.
Have you ever had bad times and felt like giving up?
Love the videos, your personalities shine through and it's always a pleasure when I get notification of a new video.
    Where are you headed next?

We could definitely do with less, but we rather take the weight than the hassle of travelling around a country to find a single tool or spare part 😁Of course it has been difficult at times, like in the Sahara in the summer time, but never so much that we would haver seriously considered giving up, or even changing our route. Now we are continuing down the west coast of Africa, towards South Africa!

You two are exceedingly tough, exceedingly brave, exceedingly imaginative, exceedingly good communicators and a whole bunch of other "exceedinglys". An incredible trip round the planet produced on video to a very, very high standard. Congratulations to you both on a whole variety of levels. One question: why does your site carry no adverts? Wouldn't this be the simplest way to derive income. Your number of views is high and the number of positive elements of your trip / message must align with any number of potential advertisers. However, this is a subject about which I know nothing.
Wishing you the best of luck in every regard.

Thank you so much Mike! We are hesitant to allow adverts on our channel since we don't have any control over which companies' ads are run on our videos 😕
