a lot of the pros still looked good into the 1990s, Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray, Levrone all looked phenomenal in their earlier, smaller pre Dorian Yates mass freak bandwagon days I'd say it all turned to shit when Coleman and Cutler started winning the Mr O
No he already had multiple surgeries and heart fallacies. He is just rich so he can afford good health care. If he was not he would have been dead by now.
Um alot of the guys from the late 80s look great - If anyone stops eating and training like a body builder they will look normal - Dorian looks great for his age - only one that comes to mind is coleman even though he was mainly a 90s guy - gotta also remember the 80s guys are freaking old now
Agreed, if not totally off they cut WAY down, these guys now are a joke looking like an obese power lifter, classic is or should be the way to go, looks much better and I am sure MUCH healthier, looking like a 330 pound marshmallow sure isn't healthy, what good being so big if you cant even walk a flight of stairs or have a 80 year old man tire you out on a walk around the block
Arnold once said that he never took off his shirt when not in shape. That's why you won't find a picture of him in really bad condition from his competing years.
When people say Arnold couldn't compete today, they are completely full of shit. If Arnold blew up to 300lbs in the offseason and dieted down, he would have been enormous. But his health actually mattered to him. These guys today are putting it all on the line for the next contest, and some are paying the ultimate price in doing so.
Markus G steroids aren’t the key to anyone’s success. The guys now are so pumped full of gear but are they more successful? Your argument makes no sense at all. There’s a reason not everyone looks like this, 99% of steroid users still look natty because they don’t have the work ethic or genetics
We should show gym newbies this video, shows a much more natural and human side to bodybuilding (or how it used to be) and could be more inspiration than a 300-350lbs mass monster
This was a great value to humanize bodybuilders of the old time. Arnold still looked great with some body fat and probably never had a lot to lose to get back into show shape.
To me, I think the best Arnold looked in his film career was in the suit up beach scene in Commando. He looked good in Red Heat and Predator and in Conan the Destroyer he was amazing as well. But that beach scene Arnold had the vacuum stomach and he was in just the right size.
Offseason Arnold looks like something, that is almost achievable for normal people without using steroids. Also did not know, that Arnold had sported that look in his younger days. It really puts some things into perspective, so thank you very much, for presenting to us offseason Arnold.
RobertWilkinson I think alot did come off or do 6 week bulking cycle and would cycle into a comp. But i always remember reading guys in the 70s and 80s being only 10lb or so from competition weight. Granted they arent as lean as guys today but i think the conditioning back then looked better than the ultra ripped look.
Arnold doesn't look 50))) come on. he looks ok because he wears a wig, make up, and a ton of botox. he actually looked really young until he hit about 53 or so. than he rapidly aged for some reason. politics maybe?
Arnold looked amazing in his off season, unlike many today. I know he was an early adopter of steroids but dare I say it, he looked more natural! From what I understand the drugs were a lot weaker back then and far less abused
Hi Nick, Greetings from France ! Your work on this channel is incredible, so much passion ! I really enjoy it, you have a bright future ahead of you ! Nicolas Fagnard
back in the golden era, bodybuilders usually went off the sauce in the off season and just trained to stay fit. When contest prep started they went on cycle and got bigger right into the day of the contest.
Lindio Pojani You idiot that guy Jason has autism and other mental and physical disabilities which makes him unable to build proper muscles like other competitive bodybuilders. Don't make fun of a disabled person because who knows in your next life you could be born as a disabled person yourself.
You are an idiot sir not realizing that some mental problems like jason's don't make people lazy, eat a lot of junk food, and skip training. He can't be justified for everything just cause he has some mental issues. That's sickening. Piss out.
It’s cuz they stopped taking primo and Deca during the off season I think, primo and Deca (I think) were used mainly when they were prepping for a competition
SuperFunkmachine Deca causes water retention at high dosages, not at low or even moderate dosage for many people, although some users get puffy even at low dosage. Different people really seem to respond differently to it
Near the end of Arnold`s bodybuilding he was actually decreasing his mass deliberately in the off season to look more sleek and normal looking for acting roles.. In fact Arnold was not even planning to compete in the 1975 Olympia due to his interest in becoming an actor but George Butler pleaded with him to compete in order to make the documentary pumping iron..
One other point, what a case for muscle memory? You see Arnold off season looking almost human, so it took him what about 6 years to build that body? Then in a matter of months go from OK to Olympia stage, it's very encouraging. I'm going on my third week back after Liposuction and stomach Etching and I can't believe how quick everything is blowing up, it's like every morning I wake up and see a new me.
That's how I understood it too. When they were really serious the goal was to see how much they could keep during the 12 weeks off. That way when they got that giant jump in testosterone when they went back on they hoped they had a bigger starting point of muscle than last time enabling them to take it even further the next 12 weeks. This is how they could build what they did with much lower doses. Today they are on huge amounts year round and when one dose doesn't work anymore rather go off cycle with those old wisdom they just keep increasing it.
you have to come off, for the drugs to work properly (or switch compounds) the body gets used to them and the results will be crap. you will also fuck own your own t production for life if you don't. that's why most former pro bb'ers are on trt anyways..
Hey Nick, I would love to see you compare Golden Era bodybuilders to modern Classic Physique competitors in a head-to-head competition. It'd make for a really interesting series, especially with your opinion on it.
Social media and the web has really given us access to so much more of the real picture. Arnold was always this surreal, incomprehensible person that must have been 100% on all of the time. I’ve since been lucky enough to meet him in the flesh and seeing so many pictures of him, while he was exceptional he was also like everyone else. There are photos where he looks very plain and tell me that he definitely had times where training wasn’t his priority.
Evm of season.arnie lookd great.i noticed to hes very relaxed no tensing.spreading.was confident to be photoed..in relaxed manner.that says a lot about his confidence..self immage..
Uhh no he definitely still looks like an experienced lifter, it's just that the few juicers in the gym have skewed your view of what an experienced lifter looks like.
He doesn't look like a guy who just started lifting weights..... He may have some flab during the offseason, but he was still jacked & didn't look like the average male(in the US or the entire world).
Elder Soares dude you dumb as fuck , Arnold in his “off season” physique looks bigger and experienced lifter than you , your dad and your uncle and even you grandpa all combine ........literally
Arnold weighed around 200 lbs in the off season and would gain the majority of his size prior to a contest. As a few guys I knew, who had moved to Hawaii from California, and had trained at Golds during the lates 60's and throughout the 70s and 80s stated to me, Arnold responded extremely well to his steroid regimen. I saw Arnold compete in 73 and 74 and I went to two seminars he gave in the late 70s. He looked like a completely different person when I saw him at the seminars.
Interesting subject, very rare to find any photos of him during his off season during competing days, most photos that look like that are from his 76 to 79 retirement, most in this video are from that time but still very interesting photos and good commentary
I wonder what the vibe was at the gym when everybody was in the off season back then. Today, with all the social media and all that, I feel like there's a lot of pressure for the guys to always be huge and look cut because you gotta get those clicks and likes (unless you wanna go into hiding 9 months out of the year).
This is part of the reason Arnold still has his health today. He gave his body ample time to recover off gear each year. A lot of modern guys stay on massive doses year round. The heart just doesn't appreciate the abuse.
Its actually really encouraging to see these pics. While arnold certainly looks great off season, hes obviously not on gear in the off season. Sometimes the obsession with self image leads to steroid addictions and refusal to cycle off....Arnold was obviously more calculated and in control of his mental state. Awesome.
Off season back then meant off the hormones and give the body a break. Arnold did what he did to win. He wasn't insecure and needing to be huge all the time.
I'd love for you to do a video on Arnold's body throughout his acting career. The last time he looked badass, to me anyway, was in Twins. By his next movie, T2, he seemed significantly smaller than he had just a couple of years earlier in '87 Predator / '88 Twins...
It's like that scene in Pumping Iron where Arnold walks into the gym at 101 days pre the '75 Olympia and says "Where can I sign up? I vont to start gaining some muscles"
LOL! Arny looks great in the off season compared to the guys of today. No comparison as for staying and somewhat looking fit. I couldn't agree with you more on the ones today that just blow up. It blows my mind!
I think open bodybuilding specifically, is considered an extreme sport. Ppl who live it live extreme lifestyles and one part of the thrill of it all is how big u can get in the offseason.
I'm always in the off-season
😂😂😂
Me, too!
Dude you don't lift ok
Back when looking good was the main focus of bodybuilding.
Black Fingernail. Jokes on you, he actually gets off on getting treated like shit.... how does it feel to give another man an orgasm?
stephen stewart Even Arnold was a little big.
Connor Heim Yeah Man I agree with you :D
@@DrewLSsixThe dude you replies to deleted his comment, so your comment makes no sense at all, like wtf were yall talking about??
...and that's why he's still alive + looking like a human being unlike those monsters from the late 1980s onwards.
a lot of the pros still looked good into the 1990s, Flex Wheeler, Shawn Ray, Levrone all looked phenomenal in their earlier, smaller pre Dorian Yates mass freak bandwagon days
I'd say it all turned to shit when Coleman and Cutler started winning the Mr O
No he already had multiple surgeries and heart fallacies. He is just rich so he can afford good health care. If he was not he would have been dead by now.
John Johnson He had that heart defect from birth
Um alot of the guys from the late 80s look great - If anyone stops eating and training like a body builder they will look normal - Dorian looks great for his age - only one that comes to mind is coleman even though he was mainly a 90s guy - gotta also remember the 80s guys are freaking old now
The greatest bodybuilder of all time. He is a living legend.
Arnold did not suffer from megarexoia he could drop 30 lbs and not cycle and still had confidence in himself .Bodybuilding was the tool not his life.
*No bubblegut..*
Touche'
but no abs completly flat
Nope... Because real bodybuilding.
That's completely losing gain...
Igor Krstic
did you even see the modern lardy, bloated off season whales in the video ????
did you even notice the difference ????
You can tell he went off cycle in the off season, his muscularity went down, not as much as Kevin levrone but still noticeable
Nathen Wallis Yea arnold said he only used steroids when cutting down
I was gonna say exactly what Nathen covered, because that's generally that's how they did things.
I think it's still there.. just holding a lot of water and eating lots of carbs...
Not sure about off cycle. Mb to TRT doses. And most of the pics are from his time after bb.
Bodybuilders of yesterday looked "normal", buff normal people. The bodybuilders of today look like freaks. And that's not a compliment.
Arnold once said that he never took off his shirt when not in shape. That's why you won't find a picture of him in really bad condition from his competing years.
Seeing Arnold in the off season makes me feel better about myself
The water buffalos have got to go.
0:55 best shape of a bodybuilder I have seen ever!!! But other people have a different point of view.
Arnold will always be the greatest of all time!!
Markus G Arnold in his 70s is still in the gym and making movies, for instance Coleman is 53 yrs old and walk with a stick. That tells you something.
Markus G steroids aren’t the key to anyone’s success. The guys now are so pumped full of gear but are they more successful? Your argument makes no sense at all. There’s a reason not everyone looks like this, 99% of steroid users still look natty because they don’t have the work ethic or genetics
His ticket to success was hard work, intelligence, focus, and character.
Markus G, There were soo many bigger guys around his era. None of them became actor and governer
Markus G because it's impossible to achieve that kind of body without the gear... Even with the greatest genetics.. and the hardest work..
1:08 THAT pose is a perfect example of what post 80s bodybuilding became and why "The Golden Age" of BB will always be the best.
Arnold still be looking better than me on his off season
No shit
Phil Heath should take notes and not get pregnant in the offseason!
Swedish Wiking ! Not only in the offseason...
he's a manlet, arnold wasnt
Phil Heath is pregnant onstage also, looks like shit..
Once you go bubble gut you can't go back.. you're internal organs grow.
We should show gym newbies this video, shows a much more natural and human side to bodybuilding (or how it used to be) and could be more inspiration than a 300-350lbs mass monster
Big box Aleks meh, I get pretty inspired by today's bodybuilding, whoever doesn't like it is not stopping to appreciate
What is there to appreciate?
Daniel González There's nothing to appreciate. It's grotesque. Only people with body dysmorphia see any value in it.
This was a great value to humanize bodybuilders of the old time. Arnold still looked great with some body fat and probably never had a lot to lose to get back into show shape.
ARNOLD OFF THE STEROIDS LOOKED LIKE A REGULAR DUDE WHO LIFTS
Why be a 300lb man, that hard on heart and joints, no one feels good at that weight.
One thing I’ve learned from Arnold and Larry Scott is “biceps are for life” they don’t go away
To me, I think the best Arnold looked in his film career was in the suit up beach scene in Commando. He looked good in Red Heat and Predator and in Conan the Destroyer he was amazing as well. But that beach scene Arnold had the vacuum stomach and he was in just the right size.
Predator for me
Physique was badass in that and he was very lean
Also his best movie
gutz1981 very true. It was def achievable to us.
Ur mom gay
gutz1981 definitely makes phill heath look like shit
gutz1981 You mean where he was in that sexy mankini.....gayday alert!!!
Arnold off season looks like he didnt take steroids..
why does bodybuilding has to be so ugly these days...? you can never look at bodybuilders of today and go "yeah thats how i wanna look like"..
Arnold von Schwarzenegger ...shit wrong chanel
Calcium Von Biceptear
Lol
2:30 greatest picture of all time
Nicks Arnold’s and Offseasons

1:28 those arms just didn't wanna go away even when he took his foot of the gas
They look like they come off during that time
RobertWilkinson

Yeah they did. Also why Arnold is still alive and has less health problems at his age than modern bodybuilders.
Some Guy You have to be kidding me. Arnold is a mess on the inside. He started with dbol at 15-16...no hate on him , still is the GOAT
Rich Piana's Oil Distribution Manager if he is just a mess on the inside then how does he look like he's in his 50s at 70 years old
Arnold doesn't look 50))) come on. he looks ok because he wears a wig, make up, and a ton of botox. he actually looked really young until he hit about 53 or so. than he rapidly aged for some reason. politics maybe?
1:05 holy fuck, Big Ramy blows my mind every time
Wow, Arnold off steroids looks a lot different... he looks so normal...
Arnold looked amazing in his off season, unlike many today. I know he was an early adopter of steroids but dare I say it, he looked more natural! From what I understand the drugs were a lot weaker back then and far less abused

back in the golden era, bodybuilders usually went off the sauce in the off season and just trained to stay fit. When contest prep started they went on cycle and got bigger right into the day of the contest.
You definitely must do a video on Jason Genova in the off season, the guy doesn't change by a pound from off to on, what a freak!
HAHAHAHA best comment!
RUBY BLASSIC BABY SHOOP AH SHOOP AH HES A FUCKIN FREAK BABY DOES HE LOOK SOFT 2 U

It’s cuz they stopped taking primo and Deca during the off season I think, primo and Deca (I think) were used mainly when they were prepping for a competition
Faizan Chaudhry exact, and today guys are on steroids even in bulking phase.
No this was when there on Deca, it's well know as a "wet" drug, users tend to gain water weight
SuperFunkmachine you don’t gain this much “water weight” on any gear
SuperFunkmachine Deca causes water retention at high dosages, not at low or even moderate dosage for many people, although some users get puffy even at low dosage. Different people really seem to respond differently to it
That's why those guys stayed healthy
Near the end of Arnold`s bodybuilding he was actually decreasing his mass deliberately in the off season to look more sleek and normal looking for acting roles.. love ur stuff Nick. been watching your stuff since 10k
You are always presenting the more interesting topics Nick! Appreciate it.
They came off in off season or in really small dosages
they came off completely, 12 weeks on 12 weeks off was the usual cycle!
That's how I understood it too. When they were really serious the goal was to see how much they could keep during the 12 weeks off. That way when they got that giant jump in testosterone when they went back on they hoped they had a bigger starting point of muscle than last time enabling them to take it even further the next 12 weeks. Alex P Seconded, that’d be a great vid
+Alex P "...compare Golden Area bodybuilders..."
*golden era - it was a time, not a place.
Good foto selection, Never seen some of them

Arnold aka GOAT... Nick, you are one of the best youtubers ,in my opinion! Keep up!
Another interesting video... thanks for all your hard work
He looked amazing in 'Commando' . That is still my ideal body
Great video! Highlights a lot in terms of the difference between the bodybuilding eras
Arnold looking like someone who had just started lifting weights when he off season lol. But what a specimen of a man when he`s cut up.
Uhh no he definitely still looks like an experienced lifter, it's just that the few juicers in the gym have skewed your view of what an experienced lifter looks like.
Philitron128 I agree. Still big enough to do an action movie, especially if he kept his shirt on.
....Looked like someone who just started lifting??? What planet are you living on lol!
Thanks for this video bro, makes me feel better about how I look right now before I start my cut for this summer!!
Good vid nick. As always.
I like seeing photos of Arnold in the off season. It makes me feel normal.
Great video as always bro
Arnold weighed around 200 lbs in the off season and would gain the majority of his size prior to a contest. As a few guys I knew, who had moved to Hawaii from California, and had trained at Golds during the lates 60's and throughout the 70s and 80s stated to me, Arnold responded extremely well to his steroid regimen. Olegario Martinez i dont think arnold has been 200 lbs since he was 18 years old
Nathan Lucenti 17
Great topic Nick. Great vid. Super interesting. Thanks.
love your videos nick
tbh I have never seen these offseasons photos of Arnold, very interesting
Interesting subject, very rare to find any photos of him during his off season during competing days, most photos that look like that are from his 76 to 79 retirement, most in this video are from that time but still very interesting photos and good commentary
Arnold in the off-season- the dad bod we must all aspire towards.
Nice vedio nick.. I am alwys waiting for your vedios... Keep sharing .. 😊
I wonder what the vibe was at the gym when everybody was in the off season back then. Today, with all the social media and all that, I feel like there's a lot of pressure for the guys to always be huge and look cut because you gotta get those clicks and likes (unless you wanna go into hiding 9 months out of the year).
Good point
Pekin duck has no off-season. We are an apex species every single day
Growing up in the 80's, Arnold Schwarzenegger was the ideal dude everybody wanted to be.
Very interesting! More videos about other Bodybuilders in the offseason would be nice!
He was still very jacked in the movie Predator! Do was Carl Weathers
you are amazing for the sport nick :) love your work
Dylan Russell .very much so.wth great integrity..to.
Arnold schwarzenegger king of the body building for all time
This is part of the reason Arnold still has his health today. He gave his body ample time to recover off gear each year. A lot of modern guys stay on massive doses year round. The heart just doesn't appreciate the abuse.
my boy nick with another video!
Its actually really encouraging to see these pics. While arnold certainly looks great off season, hes obviously not on gear in the off season. Sometimes the obsession with self image leads to steroid addictions and refusal to cycle off....Arnold was obviously more calculated and in control of his mental state. Awesome.
2:36 lmao nice chickens legs
Another great video!!!!!!
In his off season he still had a very good physique unlike a lot of other bodybuilders.
Arnold is the GOAT!!!
It was a lifestyle back then, not just a sport. Now it's a sport first and not necessarily a lifestyle.
Old school rules !💪
thanks for the video, never seen arnold on the off season pics!
this pics are amazing!
Off season back then meant off the hormones and give the body a break. Arnold did what he did to win. He wasn't insecure and needing to be huge all the time.
The One & Only!
Arnold is the legend
That’s what you call bodybuilding👍🏽
love Armold the best bodybuilder muscle worship you Mr. Arnold
Really great info.
Great content! Informative
Can’t believe this video got demonetized! but fuck it right?? This video is fantastic and hedge is proud and that’s all that matters💪🏻
Arnold in the off season looked like someone that really enjoyed life.
Nix trenf npowah back at it again with another solid post
Nice video. I seems that its easier to downsize these days. So all the bodybuilders can bulk up easily without any fear to downsize in future.
Looks like he terminated his cycle during off season and said I’ll be back before coming in to win again what a champ
