  • tomhess.net/Gu... The best ways to practice guitar are not the typical ways most people practice. That makes sense because average practice methods bring you average results. Better practicing methods bring you better results (obviously). Here are the best ways to practice guitar [...]
First, you need to realize that the way most people approach guitar practice isn’t very effective - if it were, the average person would be so frustrated and stuck with their guitar playing.
So, lesson 1 is = to do the exact opposite of what most guitar players do when it comes to practicing.
Second, you do NOT need to practice multiple hours per day to become a great player. What you do need is to get more benefit from the practicing you do on the guitar.
Third, a better way to practice guitar is to practice various musical elements simultaneously, NOT sequentially. That does not mean multitasking as you practice; it means rotating what you focus on. Do NOT practice one thing at a time before moving on to the next step. We are not assembling furniture … we are mastering an art form. To do that, we need to focus on elements not in a sequential order. (If that sounds counterintuitive, that’s because it is.
So, grab your guitar, and let’s have some fun!
Fourth up in this guitar practice tutorial is to set yourself up for success BEFORE you pick up your guitar to practice. Most players never do this - and then they wonder why they continue to feel frustration because they’re struggling to learn and master guitar.
Fifth, as you practice guitar, it’s crucial to begin to apply and integrate what you are practicing even before you have mastered whatever you are practicing. Most people get this backward. They falsely believe that the best way to practice guitar is to focus on one thing at a time and master it before moving on. That is not a good way to practice your guitar playing. I’ll show you why in this guitar practice tutorial video!

Number 5 has always been a natural thing for me. When I've been learning solos and got stuck on 1 lick, I would not stop learning the whole thing until I've mastered it. That just would be time inefficient. So as an example I would play the whole solo, messing up the lick in the middle, and play the rest of the solo correctly 😂😅

Practicing picking and fretting hand separately sounds great. What is the best way to practice the fretting hand separately? I think I would not hear anything so I wouldn't know if I was muffing notes

This is great! I've always tried to set aside some of my available practice time to just have some fun and enjoy being able to play the instrument, but usually only after some focused time working on stuff I'm not already good at. Applying focus and discipline is of paramount importance, especially for those days when you know you can only play for an hour or so. You can "play" while the tv is on, kids are fighting or the wife is telling you about her day, but you can't really "practice" under those conditions.
