I haven't personally used Karo syrup to do this. It may be too 'wet' and make the glitter glitter slip down off the side of the cake? It could be worth a try though. Let us know how you get on if you try it! :)
They may 'melt' on fresh, moist buttercream. I'd suggest using a crusting buttercream and then brush lightly with piping gel as in the video and apply that way.
