    It's weird how that section on Car Wreck basically from the crashed car to the switchback, can almost be even more squirrelly and sketchy than the jagged rock garden beforehand. Many crashes, like Katy's, seem to happen there. I've crashed there too and it was a faceplant as well, though on a different rock! Anyway, redemption is always sweet. Nicely done. A lot of people seem to turn off the camera at the switchback. Trail is not "officially cleaned" until the final root/rock stream crossing which can also be a little janky sonofagun. ;-)

    • @mtb_alan
      @mtb_alan  3 роки тому +1

      Totally. I got hung up in the same section the very first time I rode there. Do you remember when there was an awkward drop down by where the car door is? That was fun. LOL!
      And yes! Nothing like a redemption ride. 👊🏾

    Been trying you're new technique and it seems to help but feel like if a rock sneaks up on me I'm going over the bars for sure. A couple close calls last weekend in annadel state park home of many rock gardens.

    • @mtb_alan
      @mtb_alan  3 роки тому +1

      Yikes. Make sure you’re still centered on the bike and keeping the weight behind the pedals by engaging your posterior chain (butt and hamstrings). This is actually why everyone says to drop your heels.
      Also check to see if you’re inadvertently transferring more weight onto your bars when you’re leas crouched.
      Hope that helps!

  • @foxykc

    A couple of things. By how her GoPro was pointed on this video she was not looking at the spot where she crashed. I seem to think that she was looking at where she crashed when she crashed. So obviously she took her attention off the bad thing and just kept looking where she wanted to go. The second thing is one of the first things my coach taught me is how to stay loose on the bike and how your arms and legs absorb shock as the bike moves underneath you. And if you keep heavy pedals, meaning you're waiting your petals you can keep your center of gravity more where it belongs. I find this exceptionally helpful in sticky spots especially since I got a 29er full suspension which makes it much easier to stay in the middle of the bike. Katie was much more relaxed on this whole tour of your ride. The breaking advice you gave is very crucial.

    Hey Alan - Love the videos. I'm headed down to SoCal from the Pacific NW in late June to ride with a buddy of mine. I'll be staying in Huntington Beach and was wondering - What are the must-do trails in Southern California?
    A bit of background.... I'm a pretty solid blue to black rider up here in the PNW. I'd say I'm mostly an XC rider (earn your turns) but love some great flowy downhill. For reference I ride a 2020 Tall Boy

    • @mtb_alan
      @mtb_alan  3 роки тому +1

      Nice! Thanks for reaching out and for giving me some details. :)
      Not sure how many days you have, so here's a few suggestions in order of preference.
      ALISO
      You'll be pretty close to Aliso which will give you the classic SoCal experience. If you haven't seen my trail guide for Aliso, it's a nice introduction to those trails and shows parking, etc.. ua-cam.com/video/wSkpl3yH1gw/v-deo.html
      It's a guide to all the trails shown in this vid.
      It's pretty chunky and sometimes steep but still has some flow.
      There's also a nice gastro pub nearby we like to go to called Laguna Beach Beer Company.
      BIKE PARKS
      I want to suggest Snow Summit, but depending on what you're into as an XC rider, you might not get as much out of it. That being said, having lift access to the singletrack off the back of the mountain is pretty nice.
      ua-cam.com/video/iDeankTwEp8/v-deo.html
      Skypark at Santa's Village is a gem, and if you're willing to make the drive up the mountain, you won't be disappointed. Short but well-designed trails, cooler temps, good beer and food at the bottom of the trails, and just good energy all around. It's really easy to spend a whole day up there getting laps, taking breaks in the village, and getting more laps.
      ua-cam.com/video/SVeco_K5PZM/v-deo.html
      OTHERS
      Santiago Oaks is another classic SoCal trail system. It can be tough in the heat as there's zero shade, but it has a nice collection of trails ranging from mellow contour trails to steep and dusty rock waterfalls.
      The Luge is another classic but it's kind of a one lap deal. Good to do if you wanna hit it in the morning and then something else after lunch.
      Hope that helps!

    When you’re riding a trail with some flow and chunk, what sort of air pressure adjustment do you make to your tires, if any? Or, do you tend to ride the same pressures most of the time?

    • @mtb_alan
      @mtb_alan  2 роки тому +1

      I pretty much run the same pressure all the time. I prefer predictability.
      The only time I switch is for the bike park, and then I maybe run 2psi more in both tires to have better rolling speed and to handle the quick hits when we're cooking.
      All that being said, I think if I were up in the PNW, I might run lower PSI in my tires.
