Hi! Emma from over 2 years in the future here! Just want to clear up some very common comments: Yup I figured out msg isn't bad for you hahaha This place was expensive, but definitely not the worst deal in Tokyo. Though at the time I had not many options due to my Australian working holiday visa! I now live in a larger apartment for much cheaper and live and work still in Tokyo :) The only thing I miss from this apartment is the cool sci fi toilet, and how quickly the place got warm in winter when I turned on the heater. This place was amazing short term, but the lack of sunlight, location, and size were a bit rough after 11 months haha It was a great experience living there and I learned a lot about myself and how to utilize space and appreciate what I have. If you want to see where I live now I have made plenty more videos during my time here in Japan :) Thanks for watching and enjoy the rest of your UA-cam browsing!

I wish there was a house where i can put up walls myself to divide the house anyway i like and switch it up once in a while :) I would like a storage space for other stuff tho like tools.
Designing tiny houses is a bit of a hobby of mine, so I was kinda surprised that a Japanese apartment couldn't manage a bigger fridge. Obviously, I don't mean full-size, rather ones with a proper freezer compartment that are in between a normal fridge and a mini in size.
Agreed, it's like an adults treehouse. I personally wouldn't mind living like this in a western country and would have actually killed for it when I was staying at a student dorm than share a big kitchen, bathroom and washrooms with others.
Speak for yourself pal. I may live alone, but I needs my two living rooms (one formal, one family,) my four car garage, my dining room that can seat ten (even though I never have people over) the cathedral ceiling in my en-suite bathroom, and my jacuzzi tub that could easily accommodate four people.

Plus, you've been brilliant enough to turn that tiny gross place into a really cozy oasis with lovely plants and cute home ornaments, so do not care for stupid small talk...Just be yourself and be happy! 😃
When in university, I was living out of a 10x10 foot room with a tiny ensuite bathroom. The room had a sliding door that led directly outside. I literally never used the door that led to the rest of the house, because that was part of the rental agreement. It might as well have been a brick wall. Paid $350 per month to the family that lived there, which included wifi and parking. I bought my own mini-fridge, microwave, and toaster oven. I wouldn't have changed a thing! At that time in my life, I didn't need space, or luxury. It's certainly an experience, though!
I thoroughly agree. There is a time in our lives when the adventure of living in a new culture and new language is more than the place where you put your head down at night. The apartment itself will be one of the experiences she from her time in Tokyo.
I love it as well! I feel like living in it would almost force you to live more minimally and purchase more multi - use items. Personally, I think she could probably get rid of some stuff to make it look more roomy.
I suggest putting planks across those two metal bars as a shelf and use part of ceiling area bit of storage. Maybe get a couple of wicker baskets to hid your stuff in it.
Yeah, i like to raise my arms up in the middle of that space! So i'm trying to keep it as open as possible. But that is a good idea for extra storage! I guess i'll just have to not buy more stuff haha
It's so small. that hidden toilet, that small fridge. oh wow.. I love it!! If I had a choice I want 2 extra square meter or more just to fit a washer and full size (fridge)
"if something comes in the mail, and i can't read it, because it's in Japanese, I put it in here, and i forget about it. So that's the drawer we don't open" LMAO, That's genuinely hilarious. I have no idea how i would handle getting mail in Japanese.
I am a US citizen living in Mexico. When I first moved here I did not speak the language and could not read my mail. I met my neighbors by walking up and down the sidewalk asking anyone outside if they spoke English. I found a guy who spoke a small bit. I asked him what my mail was. He explained this is the water bill, this is electricity... Paying bills here is trippy. You don't do it on line and you don't write a check and mail it. I asked how to pay my bills but his English was not good enough to explain. First six months was quite the learning experience! I have a drawer that I throw stuff in that is more Spanish than I can read. If it is a bill I am expecting it and already know. Anything else I put it in a drawer and I always plan to take it to my neighbor but by the time I do it is months and months old.
I'm 6'3, or 190cm and have very wide shoulders. This ''apartment'' gives me nightmares, and I'm not even claustrophobic. Like living in a match box or something.
I would put up with the tiny space if i could find a safe affordable place to live in Toyko or any other mega city. Not being able to invite friends into your home would be a bummer though!
@@happydon999 I could live in a coffin like that for the single month the contract is good for. It's probably only a month long precisely for that reason: Nobody's meant to live in a tiny space like that for extended periods of time. Of course during that month I'd only be there to sleep and occasionally eat, otherwise I would be sightseeing. A couple of hours working on a computer would also be tolerable.
The place looks actually pretty cozy and I'm impressed by the amount of stuff one can fit into an apartment this tiny. The only thing holding me back from actually wanting something like that (apart from the price) is the fact that I own WAY too many books and I wouldn't want to part from almost all of them
if you really want place like that you could probably fit bookshelf in the loft level... just move matress a little from the wall and on the whole lenght you could squeez really shallow shelves ;) and big books under the desk or in the genkan you could have shelves above the shoe shelves XD
is it weird that this video makes me want to come to Japan even more? Like I already did but ah... I think I'd love living in that apartment. I love small spaces and this is just the right amount.
10:33 LOL That's Spanish Moss! ...Which... oddly enough is neither Spanish... nor moss... hmm. I nearly spit out my coffee when I saw it hanging on your wall, because, where I live, it grows on EVERYTHING, harbors bugs like lice, chiggers and spiders and is generally regarded as dirty. It's not something we like to even touch let alone bring indoors so when I saw you proudly growing it indoors and worrying over it's health, I had quite a good chuckle. LOL I'm positive that your Spanish Moss is clean, though, and it looks SUPER healthy - the brown center is normal - it will do that as the outside mass increases. And, bonus, I'm pretty sure it cleans the air to some extent! Thank you for renewing my appreciation for this funny-looking friend! Oh, and love the apartment too!

Hi! This video showed up in my feed this morning, and I wasn’t sure why... then, I watched your video. You are a breath of fresh air and very down to earth and relatable, which is why your video was so enjoyable. No frills, just you giving an honest tour of your apartment in Japan, and sharing the few small side stories (like the drain), it really made the whole video relatable. Loved it. Subscribed, keep them coming. It also makes us Westerners realize how much we take for granted, in that the Japanese are the epitome of efficiency and compact design. My own home is 2100 square feet, and I am filled with useless collectibles and electronics that I never use. Just more to dust and clean. Your apartment is so efficient and has all anyone would really ever need. Great job.
All utilities included AND a short lease? Cheap AF. A one bedroom apartment with 500 square feet where I live is 750ish or more depending on what area you're in...
To a foreigner with a big body because it is so narrow, it looks small. But I live well. The house is large, but the interior has not been able to devise anything
May be your apartment is small but it is well organised and properly designed. I really liked the way you have used every tiny bit of space and kept your sleeping space clear from clutter.
I like your little plant ball. And I actually really like this house even tho it's small it seems cozy and cute and I really like the way you have decorated it. But I can imagine it would get kinda frustrating
☆Imperials☆ Ik!! I watched that video the other day and I wanted to see how it compares to this video but I'm happy for her that she finally has some space to live in
I live in America. As you know, Americans like things large. VERY large, larger than they need to be. As an American, I couldn't imagine living in here, especially because I grew up in a fairly large home in the countryside, where you have plenty of space to roam around. I also see a lot of small cars in Japan, I'm used to large pickup trucks where you can lay down across the bench seat inside. I guess what you like just kinda depends on how you're raised.
Same, is there a word for being the complete opposite of claustrophobic? I live in America but would rather live in a cozy small home. I would definitely want to live in her house, but I would have to decorate it differently...
They make smaller things, like special tape and wall siding too if she felt like separating all the cords. Just think how maybe everything will be wireless in 20 years...
That's definitely an apartment that will make you appreciate going outside and hanging out in cafes. To be honest, that's not really a bad thing for most people. Many people honestly spend too much time lounging around at home anyway.
the fact that there were almost 3000 people who downvoted this really sweet, innocent and fun video that has only good intentions just shows how you should never take "downvotes" personally. There is so no reason to downvote this video, yet, so many of them did. Being on social media really requires you to have healthy dose of self-confidence.
I feel you a lot cause I live in a very tiny apartment in Tokyo too It's amazing that you managed the tiny little space so well, better that I do lol. So many air plants so cute💖 You are very wise to realize that your living space and your sleeping space should separate, but I didn't and I got my fridge next to my bed and I have been thinking I want a complete "self" space Thanks for the share it's really inspiring!
No worries on the price. Out here in Amsterdam one only get a fraternity room for that price. That price than excludes wifi, water, gas etc. Sounds like a fair price. Especially in Japan, which is not know for being cheap.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. You have a very gentle and natural way of handling your situation. Brave lady. Subscribed and looking forward to catching up on all your uploads.
I live in London. I pay £507 per month for a room quite big for my self and with a small patio-space as big as that entrance/kitchen. I share a big kitchen and bathroom... really, people complain about the prices in London. I simply CAN'T.
Lol. No reason to argue. I agree with you. Eventually I will move out of London, but right now, I want to enjoy the Town a little bit more: lots of art galleries around, lots of culture events... that's the most interesting part of London for me.
Apartments in Germany are mostly quit cheap in fact to other countrys... for around 70m² you pay around 500-750€ and around 600-800€ in the centre of citys like Berlin or Cologn so it is quit cheaper than a 500€ apartmanet with 8m² in Tokyo or a 450€ room in London xD
Medina Music I live about forty miles outside London in Kent. I've just got on the property ladder after years and years. My mortgage is £615 a month for a small detached bungalow with a good size back garden and small front garden. Five hundred odd quid for a room in a house is a lot of money!
I love your personality, and the way you described things in your apartment. Especially in the bathroom, I never would have guessed where the toilet was, lol. It's actually not a bad place, and you have it fixed up cute.
This actually sounds like a pretty cool experience in my opinion. My room is already *very* small (like a little bigger than her loft), and I actually like it. It's quite cozy.
I was expecting something even higher for her Tokyo apartment. I'd much rather rent a place in Tokyo than Helsinki, if I had to choose, since the prices seem to be the same :D
Oh, and the month to month lease. Would never happen in Helsinki for less than €1300+ if they even offer such. I'm comparing with month to month leases in other big cities.
Love the idea of a workstay in Japan / tiny home in general. But as a 6'2 guy, seeing you sit snug from wall to wall, in that floor chair. My legs are already aching!
@@mikeelmira depends; if you compare the actual knowledge level those citizens possess to their arrogance, which one is really more arrogant, haha. I mean like a Knowledge-arrogance ratio

I thought I might share some suggestions that might make even better use of your space (which to be fair you've done a really good job already). Firstly I noticed there isn't much space for you to store clothes and such so was gonna say it might be worth checking out Melissa Maker's UA-cam channel called Clean My Space which has some great folding techniques which actually use less space meaning you could free up some more room in a draw (maybe). Secondly if you are allowed to drill then you could have a hook for folded chairs on the wall or maybe even consider a command hook for chairs as they don't ruin walls and are just stuck on. the same could be done with a proper folded table hung to the wall so you could have people over for tea. Thirdly I noticed that you had no under bed storage because it's on the floor. not sure if that is do do with the height of the room because can't see that much in the video. Lastly, you could put planks of wood onto the bars and secure them there by putting two pieces of wood which could be glued (wood glue or hot glue) into place. The might give you further storage space or you could use those rods to hang shoe holders to get vertical storage to use for other things rather than storage like jars of dried foods like rice, noodles, pasta, etc.
this is still much larger than my college dorm, it was smaller than a prison cell, no bath no storage no shower, just a bed, a desk, and a table, lived there for 4 years.
Imaginably, if you like it, that's all that matters. Having lived in Japan, I probably wouldn't enjoy a space that small, but I lived in Kochi, which as you may know is far more rural (meaning, there were fewer issues finding places to stay, which were larger). My first apartment in Japan was ~$50.00 USD a month without utilities. I enjoyed all aspects of it, excepting the drive (about 1 hour - 1.25 hours) to the city, and that we didn't have a train that ran into the town. Because of this, I had a bit of trouble getting friends up there, and vice versa, so unless things were planned so that there was a place to stay, there weren't many visitors (I could have done better on this one). My second apartment was $500.00 a month without utilities, and for a while, I was paying for two apartments (in part because the first one was not too expensive and much closer to work, while the other was far closer to the city). The woman I was dating at the time wanted to get an apartment, with me, and I didn't mind the idea of living closer to the city, since I spent A Lot of time in the city around the weekends. Alternatively, prior to getting that second apartment, after the long sober drive from spending time with friends in the city, I would occasionally forget to turn on my light outside of my apartment, and be Very pleased with the number of stars above my head. More than once, spending a good half an hour or more, since where I am living now has about 1/50th of the stars (or less) visible in the sky. The third place I was living in Japan, cost us (at this point married) 44400 yen a month, which wasn't as bad, but was challenging when it came to maintaining everything I was attempting to, and paying off my student loans in the US. I ended up moving home in hopes to pay them off and get my then burgeoning family into a good situation where we would eventually be based in both the US, and Japan, for a duration of each year. That, unfortunately fell through, and the complications and details of that have left me more incensed and irritated than ghost peppers will a common person's mouth. Generally though, whether it's called The Golden Rule, or Karma, it will all workout, and imaginably VERY much so in my favor -- as I don't believe there is any rational reason for all of the suffering I've been through over the past 5+ years. But hey, if you're interested in an invention, let me know, or I'll consider selling or donating 50% of my works to China, so as to make up for the damages done by supposed "countrymen," etc -- those fucking traitorous whores. That got dark. I'll stop. Have a good one.
Yes! Tokyo life is so busy I am always happy to come home to my tiny apartment ^^ it is such a relaxing space because i spend so much time out and about!

She's not only showing us her place but also showing us her life. Very cool video.
Honestly, this apartment is really great for one-person living. It's also environmentally friendly! I love it 💜
me too!! i would like to live there! If it was a bit bigger it would be slightly better but anyway it's so cool :D
Kelefreak careful releasing too much gas in there

I love it as well! I feel like living in it would almost force you to live more minimally and purchase more multi - use items. Personally, I think she could probably get rid of some stuff to make it look more roomy.
For some reason, I've always wanted to live in a tiny apartment like this

Idk why but sameee

Same. I would love to get rid of so much stuff
I suggest putting planks across those two metal bars as a shelf and use part of ceiling area bit of storage. Maybe get a couple of wicker baskets to hid your stuff in it.
good idea!
That's actually a great idea, but I wonder if it would make this tiny space feel even more claustrophobic.
Yeah, i like to raise my arms up in the middle of that space! So i'm trying to keep it as open as possible. But that is a good idea for extra storage! I guess i'll just have to not buy more stuff haha
There must be an error in my computer.. I keep zooming out but the apartment does not seem to get any bigger.

Hi friend..
My mother had an expression: "As cute as a bug's ear." That's you, dear, and it's a compliment. Thanks for a delightful video.
This is the sweetest apartment tour I’ve ever seen!
Totally agree!
Me 2.
I'm jealous of how organized she is lol I could never keep a place that tiny clutter free
It's so small. that hidden toilet, that small fridge. oh wow.. I love it!! If I had a choice I want 2 extra square meter or more just to fit a washer and full size (fridge)
love the hidden toilet
Why do so many people like how small it is? I'd go crazy after a week of living there! Also doesn't help that I'm scared of going up ladders. :(
I scrolled by fast and read this as "If I had a choice I want a 2 square meter" and I was like ????
"if something comes in the mail, and i can't read it, because it's in Japanese, I put it in here, and i forget about it. So that's the drawer we don't open"
LMAO, That's genuinely hilarious. I have no idea how i would handle getting mail in Japanese.
Definitely got a good laugh when she said that.
Google translate can handle that, although I'm not sure a smartphone would fit in that place...:)
I am in a similar situation, I live in France, but my french isn't great, so, I don't read mails😅.
The rent big cities around the world for small apartments is evil. In New York you may not even get a Bathroom, so you got that one beat.
damn i'm one of those weird people who want a small place this is like my dream apartment
move into a studio/ efficiency type apartment and there you go!
Me too!
I really like it too :)
ikr
Oh yasss same! I cringe seeing this like i want to live there so bad.
You can stretch your arms, just turn sideways
Or simply place a pneumatic drill in each hand whilst slowly extending your arms....hey presto, you'll achieve a full length stretch
Smart
I'm 6'3, or 190cm and have very wide shoulders. This ''apartment'' gives me nightmares, and I'm not even claustrophobic. Like living in a match box or something.
Well these apartments are for Japanese, n people in Asia are on average not more than 5 feet 7 inch.
@@zerinzinia8660 So that's why my new Mazda car seats are so narrow.
I have claustrophobia and if I ever lived in that tiny apartment,I would die

Omg same
I would put up with the tiny space if i could find a safe affordable place to live in Toyko or any other mega city.
Helio I feel the same way lol
i am handicapped and in a wheelchair.... so i cannot live there
@@perryplatypus7353 Don't worry, Japanese don't acknowledge the disabled... do you wouldn't need to worry about getting an apartment at all.
I can't believe this video was posted 5 years ago. I used to be obsessed with your tiny apartment!
Sounds like my kind of apartment (I have no friends)
Same. It's perfect, I wouldn't be inviting anyone over anyways.
I don’t really know much about Spanish Moss, thanks for teaching me
I live in Florida and that definitely looks like spanish moss. Hangs on every tree near where I live.
theheavee yep I live in Florida too and that stuff is everywhere I was surprised to see she had it on her wall lol
I used to live in Georgia and I always saw it everywhere lol. Everyone always told me not to touch it but I didn’t really know why
It’s popular among air plant (tillandsia) owners :)
how a 8 sq meter tour took 18 minutes i shall never know
If it was a man the video would have only lasted about a minute or 2.
It was two minutes of apartment tour, one minute of drain, and fifteen minutes of plants.
you're on to something there.

Aah! I saw you and your apartment on “Living Big in a Tiny House”!
Nice to see another tour.
Great job.
So, basically, you can't be claustrophobic and live in one of those apartments. It feels like it can get a little claustrophobic.
Marie same and pay $670/month? No thank you
$610 USD
All utilities included AND a short lease? Cheap AF. A one bedroom apartment with 500 square feet where I live is 750ish or more depending on what area you're in...
DavidTheGamer oh yeah I'm moving to Virginia and the cheapest decent 1 bedroom is like 980 lol.
So basically you've been stuck in that cupboard for 6 months and have gone insane.

I would definitely want to live in her house, but I would have to decorate it differently...

the fact that there were almost 3000 people who downvoted this really sweet, innocent and fun video that has only good intentions just shows how you should never take "downvotes" personally. There is so no reason to downvote this video, yet, so many of them did. Being on social media really requires you to have healthy dose of self-confidence.

It's amazing that you managed the tiny little space so well, better that I do lol. So many air plants so cute💖

Thanks for the share it's really inspiring!
No worries on the price. Out here in Amsterdam one only get a fraternity room for that price. That price than excludes wifi, water, gas etc. Sounds like a fair price. Especially in Japan, which is not know for being cheap.

I think the worst thing about living there is the fact that she's paranoid about playing the uke. Don't tell me she has paper walls.
Walls in these places are notoriously thin, and not insulated against noise.
Its an apartment that is 8 square meters, you think they are spending premium money on the walls?

That toilet/sink combo is very clever. Much respect for the inventor.
I live in London. I pay £507 per month for a room quite big for my self and with a small patio-space as big as that entrance/kitchen. I share a big kitchen and bathroom... really, people complain about the prices in London. I simply CAN'T.
katarzyna I've been thinking to move out of London but as a graphic designer there are more chances to get a better job in here. 😊
Lol. No reason to argue. I agree with you. Eventually I will move out of London, but right now, I want to enjoy the Town a little bit more: lots of art galleries around, lots of culture events... that's the most interesting part of London for me.
Here I am stuck in Cumbria... :/ It's fairly cheap I guess...
Eventually the air-plant grows to take over the entire bathroom and then apartment.

Adam White she's moved already :)
this is still much larger than my college dorm, it was smaller than a prison cell, no bath no storage no shower, just a bed, a desk, and a table, lived there for 4 years.
I'll stop. Have a good one.
i would honestly get depressed its way to small
same
Same. I live an a big house so that house would kill me
also I can't live with that tiny fridge
i cant breathe well in such tiny place XD
it probably explains why there are so many suicides in Japan
I recommend you buy hanging fruit holders because bananas don't need to be in the fridge and it would clear up some space
