Years ago, after having graduated from uni in the U.K., I returned to Hong Kong briefly and I worked as an oral English examiner for the HKCEE (or Hong Kong "O" Levels"). There were two examiners per session, and I was paired with another examiner who was from India. Her English was obviously excellent. But she did speak with an Indian accent which I had no difficulty in understanding. Her accent was, to be fair, not too thick; however, for an average Hong Kong secondary school student whose proficiency in English is already not that good, her accent must have been impossible to decipher. Whenever she spoke, the students always stared at me trying to look for clarification. I felt really bad for BOTH my colleague and the students. And I was put in a really difficult situation. On one hand, I wanted to help the student; on the other hand, I didn't want to insult my colleague. Sometimes I would rephrase my colleague's question in the most diplomatic manner. But there was just so much that I could do. I still remember vividly that most of the students ended up not doing too well that day - the ones who did the best were an Indian student (of course) and a girl from a prestige school (I believe it was DGS) who spoke English like a native speaker anyway. Thankfully another day, I was paired with a Hong Kong lady who spoke with a notable Hong Kong accent, but all the students were fine with her. Interestingly, whenever it was my turn to ask them a question (I speak with a strong British accent - I left Hong Kong for the UK to study when I was 14 years old), they looked at HER instead of me for reassurance and clarification. That was really quite funny and memorable.
Hi, I love your videos and I have a question about distinguishing "can" and "cant" in an American accent, I tried to ask native speakers but they can't really explain how they distinguish them. Besides, I am so tired of asking "do you mean can or cannot". any help, please.

。haha
