My late father owned an autobody repair business back in the 1950s. He bought a 1958 retractable at auction that was totaled. It was hit hard in the left rear and fixed it up. He was the only bidder - nobody wanted to touch it. We had this during the summer. He sold it at auction in the fall. Mom hated it. My brother and I thought it was one of the coolest cars dad ever owned. It was white, like this one and had a white and tan (or gold) interior. I liked the 58s better than the 57s or 59s.

Some people find 1958 cars gauche, but I think they were fascinatingly styled. You could easily tell which make it was with a glance, something you can't do with most of today's boring makes.

My grandmother had one pretty much identical to this one. Not convertabile. Didn't have the back part. Anyway my dad bought it from her. I drive the car from Indianapolis Indiana to Denmark South Carolina. Only thing we had to install was away belts. Gorgeous car. I'm the same age.

We (my Dad) had one of these cars in 1962. Red and white. Beautiful car. Daddy allowed me to drive it. ua-cam.com/video/Rfg9c0lag1A/v-deo.html I was in college that fall at Michigan State, when I got a call from Daddy. My sister, who has always been a bit of a show-off, 15 years old, no driver's license, took the car out one winter night when my parents were not home to show off the car. She headed north of Deckervillle, MI on Ruth Road with a passenger to see how fast it would go and of course, show off. Unfortunately, she hit a patch of black ice at a high rate of speed and lost control. That Fairlane went airborne as it left the road and over a farmer's fence. It proceeded to flip end over end several times before it came to rest a tangled mess and the hardtop torn off with no hope of repair. She and her passenger were thrown out and amazingly survived with minor injuries. You cannot how angry I was. She is 75 now and still has not repented. You can tell I am still angry.
Hi Patricia, WOW! Sorry to read what happened to the car :-( Open to suggestion? Regardless of your Sister repenting or not repenting, you can't do anything about that. However you still be carrying the anger for 60 years is not helping you. To release yourself from carrying 60 years of anger, and more importantly to get this off your mind, forgive her (really forgive her). If you do, the grudge and burden of anger you carry will be lifted, and you'll be free to see her, and enjoy her as your Sister, with her mistakes and all, just the way the Lord sees all of us, with all our mistakes, and still loves us, Lou
If I'd been you or your father I would have beaten her to within an inch of her life!!!🤔🧐🤨🤬😝😜🤭 Seriously though it shows that she really needed a good hiding to knock that entitlement she obviously carries right out of her!

I saw a commercial on this car that the transmission had to be in neutral position before the top would operate. Is this correct , and if so does the transmission supply the hydraulics to power the top ?
Hi William Dixon, Glad you enjoy the looks (other than the skirts) on this car :-) Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channell you'll enjoy, Lou
I think the '58 Fords look better than the '57s, although I know that usually the people who actually care about such things object to how the '58s are just a reworked version of the '57s.
I think the 58 looks better than the 57. Most don't and they like the 57 more. Some said it was a fiasco. And it's more rare than the 57 and 59. Not many 58 of other brands where sold either. Now they have started to import some of the 2 and 4 doors fairlines to Sweden
Hi tscooter22, Glad you like this car and think it's cool :-) Not sure how long it is, but it's a long one for sure. Hope you see many more cars on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
I love that car but it needs some TLC: the rear springs a sagging badly, paint is cracked and faded, must be a problem with the electrical system if he has to rev the engine for the top mechanism to work. And the Continental kit does not belong on that car and quite honestly looks tacky. It's a classic that deserves to be restored to it's original glory.
This is a driver, not a trailer queen, so of course there are things that could use attention. I'm not personally a fan of continental kits but if it makes the owner happy then good for him, it's his to do with as he wishes. It's nice to see a 58, since they are often seen as less attractive than the 57 or 59. I especially like this color combo. Great that has the 352, automatic and power steering. Something else to consider is the fact that cars of this era had generators, not alternators. If you needed a little extra electrical oomph, you revved the engine a bit. This car certainly would have been considered very well equipped when it was new. I like it a lot and thanks to the owner for showing it to us.
Wow! They had transformers back in 58! Awsom car 😎
NICE!
Diving board Continental Kit and CHROME fender skirts? I guess we are all different with different tastes!
Hi Craig, Thank you for sharing what you like :-) Lou

Of the retractable roof models I like this one the '58 model, the hood chrome sets it off...
HI Mo Garcia, Glad to read you enjoy the details on this one :-) Lou
Dgrrx_
A major problem with these was the wiring wasn't heavy enough for the motors that worked the deck and top resulting in car fires
Hi Kevin Boothe, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge, Lou
I owned a 59 for 31 years. The top was a problem.

Absolute sex on wheels. Listen to that baby purring during the whole video. Ford had some definite home runs during the 50's and 60's.

Oh I subscribed to your great channel a long time ago.
I saw a commercial on this car that the transmission had to be in neutral position before the top would operate.
Is this correct , and if so does the transmission supply the hydraulics to power the top ?
Hi Ronnie Sellers, I'm not sure and hoping a Viewer can share knowledge. Lou
Top is all electric, no hydraulics.
@@jamestcampbell610 if it's all electric why would the car have to be in neutral ?
So you can't move the car, the top weighs quite a bit more than a rag top. You could bend and ruin several components of the top assembly.
Tom Cam thanks, I wondered about NEUTRAL TOO,
I just saw another video of a Skyliner and the guy that owned it didn't have to rev the engine for the top to open or close.
Hi Tony D, Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Lou

tscooter22 lol maybe a late 80's - Mid 90's garage. Nothing of the last 10 years will house it for sure lol
The 58 Ford Fairlane 500 was 208" long. I don't know how much longer it was with the continental kit added.
2:26 interesting
Pretty cool how that top works.

The chrome skirts look too pimped. Also, it needs bigger white walls.
