Burgess Meredith is one of the greatest actors who ever lived. He specialized in quirky characters, but one of his best was in OF MICE AND MEN in 1939. The final scene, where he realizes he has to kill his friend Lennie (Lon Chaney Jr) is absolutely heartbreaking!! His performance in the TWILIGHT ZONE episode, THE OBSOLETE MAN is stunning, and beautifully acted. He had a long and amazing career doing what he did best. Making us believe he was someone else.
Burgess Meredith reminded me here of my Grandfather. He was a champion featherweight boxer, survived the Great Depression, joined the army and ended up jumping out of a plane on D-Day with the 82nd Airborne, survived the war, used to cut wood, farm, and do everything he wanted up to the age of 84. He smoked a pipe from the time he was 16, ate bacon, eggs, everything you weren't supposed to, and he was diabetic but you wouldn't know it. He was all of 5 feet 3 inches tall, never weighed more than 130 pounds in his life and was the toughest man I ever met.
That sounds like my grandpa. He was born in the 20's, boxer, farmer, truck driver, deputy sheriff. He was about 5'5" or so and 150 lbs. His police dog was a German Sheppard named Chancellor, that dog scared the crap out of me
RIP Burgess Meredith (November 16, 1907 - September 9, 1997), aged 89 RIP Walter Matthau (October 1, 1920 - July 1, 2000), aged 79 RIP Jack Lemmon (February 8, 1925 - June 27, 2001), aged 76 You will be remembered as legends.
I told that to a patients son a few years before this flick came out. The kid swallowed a quarter. I looked in the back of the throat made sure no airway or breathing issues then told the granting mom. Everything looks good. Make appointment with his pediatrician and call us back if he shits out two dimes and a nickel
I use that line all the time when my kids ask me for things. His speech about living so long reminds me of my life because I should've been dead decades ago yet I'm still here
Burgess was just a scene stealer! Every time he was on screen he was captivating and so funny. I loved him in basically everything I've ever seen him in, what a great actor.
Omg I was 🤣🤣🤣 at that part you can tell he was a naughty grandpa it reminds of my grandad he taught me how to roll cigarette's and he always let me drink one of his cans of Tango despite my mum limiting fizzy drinks!! 🤣🤣
He was struggling with Alzheimers through both movies actually, but he was heavily coached through the second one. The second one ended up being his final movie, he died nearly 2 years following it, in September 1997, 2 months shy of his 90th birthday
This guy reminds me of my friends Grandad. He always ate dessert first; it drove his daughter insane and she’d ask “what are you teaching the kids” “Im teaching the little bastards to enjoy life” was his reply
Thats a brilliant answer and the sort of thing my grandfather would say, he was a strict father but a naughty grandfather and as soon as my grandmother and mother had turned their backs he was breaking all my mother's rules giving me fizzy drinks, ice cream and sweets, he taught me to roll up cigarettes and always told me the truth. I miss him so much and my mother laughs that he broke her all rules because he was sneaky enough to never get caught lol
I’m sitting in my car in a car park watching this with tears streaming down my face...getting some funny looks from passers by but what the heck! Absolutely hilarious.
Walter and Jack we're like peanut butter and jelly while Burgess was the bread and this was easily one of the best comedy series of all time so R.I.P to all three for making me laugh and kudos for the upload I'ma put this in my funny playlist
lmfao, you can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one gets filled first.....🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣i was laughing so hard at Burgess, i stopped breathing, man he was awesome.
I love that I grew up knowing who he was . The out takes were so good. I love when he sang dream a little dream to the kid. That kid can forever say that Burges Meredith sang to me. What a great dude
Burgess Meredith was one of my favorite actors, he could play anyone. He had some of the most memorable episodes of The Twilight Zone filmed, "The Obsolete Man", "Printer's Devil", and "Time Enough At Last" were some of the classics. He then went on to play The Penguin in Batman in the late 60's, and then Mickey in Rocky 1, 2 and 3. Going way back there's an old version of Of Mice and Men that he was in that's excellent in WWII he helped make several US Army training films. He could literally do everything when it came to acting.
When Burgess Meredith tells those little kids the bedtime stories that reminds me of my grandfather at the age of 92 through 94 Telling my kids great stories, many tall tales that they still believe today. It’s important for children to have interactions with older folks. Good perspective. My kids were seven and 10 when they’re great grandfather died. It was their first experience with death but they knew it was coming. I guess it’s how we learn
This is such an underrated role for Burgess Meredith. He had to be funny and believable at the same time. I don't think his comments rise to the level of sitcom because I've had grandfathers and uncles who talked like this all the time. It comes off as natural and not forced.
Makes me miss my dad. I hope when my time is up. I can meet him like this scene and just talk. I'd give up everything I own for just 5 minutes with him again I was 15 when I lost him and the hurt never has stopped.
My grandpa and dad were like this character . The lived through some very tough times and both were in world wars . Worrying about what they ate and what they smoked or even what they said did not worry them one damn bit. My dad used to tell me when I came to him with a problem, .... Hell , if no one is trying to blow your brains out or spray your guts over a field with a 88 then you aint got no fucking problem. I miss those men now, modern people give them shit and call them names but I knew them. Men today couldnt hold a candle to them.
I have watched these movies a thousand times being a 80s baby all these movies bring me back to a time that no longer exists in the times of today good memories
Taking the old log, to the beaver!! Since seeing him in the Twilight Zone, I’ve really enjoyed his work. A legend like George Burns! Wanna peek a pe pea?! Lol
Love it I think my grandfather always thought of me as a kid and I was 37, when he passed. Hopefully him and Burgess are having a cold one and a bacon sandwich in heaven. Not light beer or turkey bacon.
God bless him Burgess Meredith made me laugh every damn time I watch this and I've watched it a million times "if I was a young fella like you I'd be mountain every woman in wabasha"😂😂😂
He was the BEST part of those movies and there was a lot of good stuff in them! Burgess had so many serious roles, but he could do comedy like a master....
I would definitely rank this as Burgess' best movies. Jesus he left us with a smile, even though he was tired and already badly demented. And yes, IMO this was even better than hies performance as Mickey Goldmill in Rocky series.
Wow reminds me of my grandpa. The stories always had adirty joke or phrase. Goldengloves lightweight in the Pacific. Was at Pearl and Guadalcanal. I never had as much time as you with him. He was 71 when he passed. A day does not go by that I don't miss him...he was my hero
Burgess Meredith was a prime example of a dirty old man , I couldn't be more proud God rest his soul & to Jack Lemmon Walter Matthau & Ann Morgan Guilbert (aka Grandma Yetta ) from the Nanny
Grandma lived to be 91 and for the last 10-15 years of her life she lived on basically just tea and eggs for breakfast, then Ice Cream and Mallomars for snacks. The doctors would probably have had a heart attack if she told them that then they would have tried to get her on a bucket load of pills to "extend" her life. Then they would probably change their minds when she told them she didn't have any health insurance plan.
“I sometimes wonder if God forgot about me”. All that humor and timing combined with THAT. Such a great scene. Burgess Meredith, ahhh, such a talent.
Sad that he had the onset of dementia during the filming of part 2
I love that scene with Burgess, such a honest and pure moment
Yes!!
Men posing as women on the internet sounds like a Real $3 dollar bill....

Crazy how the “old man” outlived Jack by more than 12 years
But he was always much older when he played the dad.
@@torianholt2752 13 years give or take
Burgess Meredith truly was one of the greats. Watch him and Lon Cheney Jr. in Of Mice and Men (1939) to see how great of an actor he was.
Legendary actors 3 of the best
That old man was awsome!!! "I weigh 90 goddamn pounds and you bring me this sloppin foam"?! Lmaoo
"If she craps out 2 dimes and a nickel, then you can worry" 😅😅
The crew laughter at the very end kills me.
I got em all

At 46 years old, this movie has a whole new and different impact on me than it did when I was a teenager....
Wait and see when you’re 70!
"Looks like Chuck's taking the skin boat to Tuna Town!" Funniest line I've ever heard, and I watch a ton of comedy.
As a mayoress of Tuna Town, it’s definitely not my favorite.
“You can wish in one hand, and crap in the other, see which one fills first.” I use this quote to this very day after hearing it from this man.

His take on Goldilocks, semi-automatic with scope...

He was a tremendous talent. His twilight zone episodes were all the best.
Oh yeah. Fan of a lot of his film and TV work.
