As you may know Sylvia Plath was Ted Hughes wife so here goldfinch refers to Sylvia Plath and the laburnum tree is Ted Hughes (her husband) this is just for everyone's better understanding please don't use this in your exams

The starting of a machine is often accompanied by different sounds and as soon as the goldfinch arrives in the tree its young ones start making noise. So the silent tree is suddenly transformed into a thing that gives out sound. So the poet compares the tree with a machine that produce sounds.
Just as an engine is the main part of a machine , so is the goldfinch to her family. As the goldfinch enters into the thickness of the tree, its young ones are delighted by its arrival so they start making noise. The goldfinch brings food to its young ones and feeds them. Thus, the poet compares the goldfinch to an engine.
