The Alchemist is such a divisive book and I think it's because its a "right book right time" novel, you know what I mean? I first read it when I was in a very transitional period of my life and I LOVED it, I became obsessed and called it my favorite book of all time for a really long time. I feel like if someone reads it during a similar transitional period then they'll feel it personally impacting them, but if they read it when they're stable and (for lack of a better word) happy with their life then they won't feel as connected to it
Little irritations everywhere 😂 We are not bored hearing about workouts; consistency is hard! I didn't like The Alchemist, it was an eye-roller for me.
"Nip this in the butt" ---- actually dying 🤣 I didn't know the expression "nip it in the bud" needed improvement, but here it is, being improved upon😂 As always, loved the vlog and glad you didn't have any regrets reading other people's regrettable reads!
The Dallergut Dream Department Store was one of my favorite reads of this year and it's become a comfort read for me☺I'd highly recommend checking out Welcome to the Hyunam-dong Bookshop by Hwang Bo-reum, a contemporary novel about a woman who starts a bookshop that gradually brings people closer together. Though it has a similar plot structure, there's a little more connecting everything, since you're seeing the bookshop transform into the heart of a community. While maintaining a cozy atmosphere, it does dig deeper into the characters' backgrounds/motivations/thoughts. It's one of those books that reminds you you're not alone, celebrates the comfort of books/bookstores, and gives you a chance to just breathe❤
With "The Alchemist" I really believe it's a beginner friendly book. Someone who doesn't read much or at all will appreciate the writing and message far more than someone who's used to more complex works. I also think there's an element of right book at the right time, not with everything you read but some books and this one could definitely be a book someone might look back on as the thing that got them into reading or helped deliver a simpler narrative when one needs it.
I read the Alchemist in high school and hated it. I read it again as part of a book club with friends about a decade later and enjoyed it. I think it was mainly my mind state at the time.
I’ve read the Haunting of Hill House and watched the show, I like them both but they are nothing alike Neither will spoil the other in any way so now worries about which you choose to do first!
I read The Alchemist and enjoyed it, though I went into it understanding it was more of a parable rather than general fiction. I like the idea of having a Personal Legend especially and the final message that while we go on a journey to become ourself, home is often right back where we began. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this book and the others as well!
The dinosaur noise I released when you showed that Nancy Drew set. While I love the Nancy Drew Mysteries, growing up the Nancy Drew Files is what I was drawn to most. It's more teen-oriented, with Nancy actually being in danger and nearly dying. I loved going to used bookstores and collecting as many of those as I could. My biggest reading regret is "Murder at the Bookstore" by Sue Minix. I don't expect a ton out of cozy mysteries, but hoo boy was this one just BAD.
I got that Nancy Drew box set for Christmas when it came out (showing my age lol). I was SO excited and loved them. They are all still nostalgic reads but don't hit the same way they did when I was younger. Hope you enjoy them. :)
I saw a lot of graphic novels on your shelf that I love and some that are on my tbr!! I would love if you did a graphic novel reading vlog or a video all about your graphic novels 😊
I’m a little over halfway through Dallergut Dream Department store and I really enjoyed the beginning! But now it just keeps reminding me of my job because I work at a store, so it just doesn’t feel like whimsical or fantastical when it has lines that like directly remind me of working with customers. 😭 I feel like people that don’t work a customer service job might enjoy this more than me, and I do like the whimsical aspects but I just wish it were more fantasy heavy so it didn’t remind me of my life 😂
I felt the same way about Little Fires Everywhere! I felt like I was halfway through and thought oh so that’s what this book is going to be about, maybe I think? I did enjoy it by the end, but did find it very slow. This was a creative idea for a video!
Fantasy is slowly trickling its way back into Jesse's life 😉 Just imagine him finally reading and getting excited by The Way of Kings, The Will of the Many or The Lies of Locke Lamora. That'll be entertaining AS 😂
I like your take on the alchemist. When I read it and felt like a grandpa or older relative was sharing a journey they took when they were young. Kind of direct, not super challenging, but you know what the relative is getting at.
I didn’t read little fires everywhere but I really enjoyed the show I am curious if the screenwriters did a better job with pacing and keeping things interesting- will you watch it and compare?
I was excited to get dalluegut but haven't. I remember reading the Alchemist before years, but literally it's more of a self help book. Love the videos! Keep them coming
I read the alchemist and I thought it was good but I was also a super angsty teen at the time so it probably struck something with me back then and I will never reread it lol. So I can just remember it fondly. I really liked little fires everywhere and actually fully loved it as a character driven reader over a plot driven reader. And so I liked the relationship building and character. I have been interested in dallergut store because of the beautiful cover. But I'm not sure it's entirely one for me...
I’ve found the best way to get rolling with the gym is to use a mix of audio books and music . As you set your work out routine the granted I mainly do cardio
One book I read recently that did not work for me was Your Shadow half remains by Sunny Moraine. Its a novella that has a similar feel to Bird Box and it follows this woman who isolates herself in a epidemic crisis where this virus is passed through Eyesight that causes people to go into Frenzied Rage. I could not get into the romance aspect of the book.
I hope you enjoy your foray into Nancy Drew! There’s also a series of PC video games made by HeR Interactive inspired by the books-the first game is based on Secrets Can Kill!
I'm early!!! 📖 I am currently reading The Lost Library by Rebecca Stead and Wendy Mass. It is so good. A book that I regret reading is Bluestar's Prophecy by Erin Hunter. It took me over a year to actually finish it and it was useless. At the time of reading it, I had already started the second series, so I already had most of the information of what was written in the main arc. The only new information that I got was that Bluestar is related to another character.
I wasn't sure if I should read “DallerGut Dream Department Store” but this video made me want to read it! I am so curious to see what I think of it! I'll give it a try sometime soon!💚 Also, I would love to read the Nancy Drew series someday too! Because her name appears often in several cozy mysteries!
I liked the second book of Dullergut Dream Department Store even more than the 1st (it's already out on my language), it has some new elements and we get to learn more about the characters
The Alchemist was probably a 2.5 for me. Neither bad nor good. Thank you so much for the info on DDS. I thought there would be an overall arching plot. And I’m still interested in reading Little Irritations Everywhere. Whilst I don’t regret it as such, I just read the complete Dark is Rising Sequence and this children’s fantasy series started in the 60’s and finished in 77. I am not the demographic and it was dated. I probably would have enjoyed other books more, even some kids books, but as for regret? Non really. I got 5 books off my TBR that had been there for many years.
I read The Alchemist before it became a worldwide success and to me the book is just a mix of all pieces of different religions texts and basic philosophy.
Ah! I see your GMDC copies! Im so nosey about other peoples' bookshelves! I was always sort of 'meh' on The Alchemist, although Senor Coelho is a very nice gentleman and a good writer, it just didn't speak to me the way it did some of my friends.
I feel The Alchemist is better listened to. It felt like a great story around a campfire. I love how colorful MHA volumes are 🥰 Staying consistent at the gym is hard but so rewarding. I love weight lifting ❤
Oh noooo I'm so sorry you read the Alchemist because of me 😅 you're so much kinder to it than I am. I could rant further, but I'll leave it where you left it haha. Also, hey I'm a floor reader too!
May I ask if you still plan on reading The City of Dreaming Books? I remember you briefly showing it in a haul and got really excited about it! It has the most lovingly created, cozy and unique fantasy world I've ever read! A snobby-dinosaur-protagonist that stumbles into an adventure way over his head and has to deal with it, in a city that is a dream come true for every booklover. Haven't been following you for long but I think you would really enjoy it, please give it a try!
I've never finished a book I didn't like, so I have no regrets in that respect. Perhaps you should try it. It's very freeing and gives you lots more time to enjoy life, the thing with the clock that is slowly ticking down every second of time you have left. Wow, I'm, like, so profound, or am I?
Leaving a second comment bc Maurice by EM Forster is on your shelf!! One of my favorites and was not expecting to see that! Have you seen the movie? (and more importantly the memes on youtube lol)
Hey Jesse, bro so my book I’m reading is called The Mary Shelly Club and I’m freakin loving it . When I finish my book I’ll let you know how I feel about it . If this book is a fail I will so upset lol but the books I regret reading are Kingdom Of The Wicked 1-3
The book is good though I read it after the show and it is very different but the book is good in its own way I just had a little difficulty with reading it (its been awhile so i am not entirely certain what it was)
I finally read and finished Laini Taylor’s “Daughter of Smoke and Bone” series and I’m sorry but I have to say it- I regret reading those three books. I read them because I LOVED Strange the Dreamer and Muse of Nightmares but man.. they really fell short for me. I felt so incredibly detached from all of the characters and the plot, I couldn’t care less about what happened. I had to force myself to finish them, which I really don’t usually do and for good reason. I felt it took everything that I loved about Stranger the Dreamer and made it… not great.
The Alchemist is one of my favorite books and if you’re not in the right head space or stage in your life to read it, I could see why someone wouldn’t enjoy it. I was kind of hoping to see Piranesi on here. Read it, should have DNF’ed it, and donated it as soon as I got the chance lol
I want a refund for my time spent reading if he had been with me… perhaps I would’ve enjoyed it if I had read it earlier in life, but unfortunately I didn’t and I regret reading it and even more so that I spent money on it!
I read "The alchemist" round my 20's and I really did not like it. I can't really say why. Maybe it was that esotherical vibe-ish thing that wasn't made for me. And at the end I thought "for this end I spent 4 hours reading?" It was really frustrating and up to now I thing a short essay would have been enough. Never picked up a Coelho book again
All* the books I really regret reading were assigned reading. If you want to subject yourself to Ethan Frome or A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, go ahead. Or The Catcher in the Rye. Or The Sorrows of Young Werther. (No points for guessing my opinion of whiny protagonists.) *Okay, not technically true, but the others that spring to mind are mostly "the point where this series jumped the shark", so it would take awhile to get there.
One book that I don’t necessarily regret reading, but somehow I can’t find myself finishing it🤷♀️, it’s called The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry. This book called my attention cause is like sort of a mix of self discovery, magical realism, and time travel. It is a YA book and maybe I will give it another chance to read it again. Another book that somehow couldn’t continue reading was The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs by Nick Trout. I thought I was gonna like it cause is about dogs and a veterinarian clinic ambience but I found in the time the main character a little annoying. If someone reads it let me know your thoughts
I was very meh about the alchemist when I read it - I felt it was too preachy and beat its message to a pulp. I picked up on the misogyny but thought the same it’s kind of in its time - but then I read The Spy by the same author and it’s supposed to be about Mata Hari’s life (fictionalized) and I’m convinced this man hates women.
I regret reading Empire of The Vampire by Jay Kristoff. I went into it thinking it was just going to be more like Dracula and just be some what spooky. And it was just straight up gore and gross things that people shouldn't have to read. I couldn't get past the first few chapters.
I don't like Coelho either but it's possible the writing style is weird bc it's a translation. The archer by him was even more self-helpy than the alchemist it was awwwfulll also pushing back on your privilege commentary a little bit bc underprivileged kids/people deserve to be told to chase their dreams too! imho people know already if it'll be a harder road for them than most. they don't need a reminder.
I didn't love the alchemist. I had to read it in high school as a part of our required reading that year. It was different from what I normally read, and I just didn't end up liking it too much.
I hated how much Ng was pushing Mia good, other mom bad in Little Fires Everywhere. It’s way more complicated than that, and Mia is kind of a shitty mom actually. I didn’t enjoy a second of that book, which was really disappointing after liking Everything I Never Told You.
I regret reading throne of glass series and city of bones. They were just brining and I didn’t like them at all. Throne of glass had too much spice and an annoying FMC who thought she could do it all but then would melt when a “hot” MMC came in. Also city of bones what just cheesy and boring. I did not like it at all. Probably because I read it at 18 when it’s more for ages 13-15.
Haunting of Hill House is one of my all-time favorite shows! The show is definitely inspired by Hill House and not really a true adaptation of the book. I read the book after watching the show and I honestly prefer the show
I'm sorry you feel that way! I'm definitely open to feedback. To clarify, I don't go off the length of the books for these videos, but I do try to prioritize the books on my physical tbr and these books are ones I just so happened to own.
The book is good though I read it after the show and it is very different but the book is good in its own way I just had a little difficulty with reading it (its been awhile so i am not entirely certain what it was)
Jesse: "I am going to start decorating for Halloween the first day of September!"
Also Jesse: *literally already has a ghost pillow next to him* 👻
The Alchemist is such a divisive book and I think it's because its a "right book right time" novel, you know what I mean? "very simple, very to the point" is "Very demure, very mindful"'s cousin
hahahaha
Alchemist being "A self book that distinguishes itself as fiction" is very true
"Nip this in the butt" ---- actually dying 🤣
I didn't know the expression "nip it in the bud" needed improvement, but here it is, being improved upon😂
As always, loved the vlog and glad you didn't have any regrets reading other people's regrettable reads!
I've always said it 'nip this in the butt' too maybe because I grew up with dogs. Lol
The my hero academia shelf is so cute! The little Tokoyami on top of the mangas and then the Shoto bear 😭.

OMG I had that exact box set of Nancy Drew books when I was a kid!! I loved those!!! What a great find!
I read the Alchemist in high school and hated it. I read it again as part of a book club with friends about a decade later and enjoyed it. I think it was mainly my mind state at the time.
I feel like when you read books in school they are a lot less enjoyable than when you read them on your own.
I’ve read the Haunting of Hill House and watched the show, I like them both but they are nothing alike
Neither will spoil the other in any way so now worries about which you choose to do first!

thank you! sorry for the hiatus

I actually have one planned for october! I have so many fun spooky halloween esque graphic novels that I want to read soon.
@@jessethereaderoh yay 😊😊 I’m planning to read some spooky ones In October too 😊

When I worked at Barnes and Noble twenty years ago, we shelved The Alchemist in the self-improvement section of the store.
that’s so interesting to me!

Love the Nancy drew box set, love the covers too! So jealous of your find.
They're so fun! Excited to get around to them.
I was so happy to see Case Closed its my favorite, also love the necklace♥
the Nancy Drew Files were my fav. I have most all of them still. Book 5 is one of my favorites. I loved those covers.
The adoption scandle story with the baby was so dated in Little Fires Everywhere. It went on and on, and was so dull.
I’m low key jealous if those Nancy Drew books
Secrets Can Kill is the first book that started the Nancy Drew games by HeR Interactive. I highly recommend games 1-32 except #20 and 30.
I'll definitely be reading Dallergut Dream Department Store, I've been waiting for a vibes book like that! Love the vid😊💓
I was excited to get dalluegut but haven't. I remember reading the Alchemist before years, but literally it's more of a self help book. Love the videos! Keep them coming
Just wanted to say- your outfit game is always on point 😊
Slay! 😎🫶🏻

this has me so excited you have no idea!!
Wow I didn't realize so many didn't vibe with the Alchemist! I enjoyed it😅
The Alchemist was probably a 2.5 for me. Neither bad nor good. Thank you so much for the info on DDS. I thought there would be an overall arching plot. Happy to see that you enjoyed my pick, even though I really disliked it 🙈 and sorry for having an impossible to pronouns swedish name hehe
I read The Alchemist before it became a worldwide success and to me the book is just a mix of all pieces of different religions texts and basic philosophy.
exactly this!
😢😢😢😢😢 I loved the alchemist. It was a wonderful book.
you're valid in those feelings!! it just wasn't for me.
I love how colorful MHA volumes are 🥰
Staying consistent at the gym is hard but so rewarding.
I really want to read "Dallergut Dream Department Store!"
this format really suits me
i'm glad you feel that waaay!
Little Fires Everywhere was fine. I read it after watching the TV show (with Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington). I much preferred the show
Hey Jesse, bro so my book I’m reading is called The Mary Shelly Club and I’m freakin loving it . When I finish my book I’ll let you know how I feel about it . If this book is a fail I will so upset lol but the books I regret reading are Kingdom Of The Wicked 1-3
Ahh I loved that book! I'm so glad you're having a good time with it.
You didn’t read the Alchemist before this? 😮
I also thought it was like the little prince…
I missed you, now I will watch all I missed
I organize my bookshelf to destress 🤣
Those are the Nancy Drew's that I read in the late 80's. 😆
Books I regret reading: Hamnet, Daughter of Smoke & Bone, The Death of All Things Seen, Devil's Day, The Familiars, The Catch.
I really regret reading the duology All of us villans. Why did I even read the second book??? Guess I wanted to know how it ended.
The Alchemist is one of my favorite books and if you’re not in the right head space or stage in your life to read it, I could see why someone wouldn’t enjoy it.
I was kind of hoping to see Piranesi on here. Read it, should have DNF’ed it, and donated it as soon as I got the chance lol
really liked this video
If you ever pick up Haunting of Hill House, the closest movie adaptation is A Haunting with Liam Neeson, Owen Wilson & Catherine Zeta Jones .
I want a refund for my time spent reading if he had been with me… perhaps I would’ve enjoyed it if I had read it earlier in life, but unfortunately I didn’t and I regret reading it and even more so that I spent money on it!
I've read The Alchemist 3TIMES for book club and hated it every time. So preachy.

Ugh the alchemist. Hated it. Glad to see here that I’m not the only one because I was very confused by its classic status while reading lol

awesome
jesse i'm not even kidding when i say that i had a dream about you reading dallergut dream department store.. what does that mean? 😮😂
and i was so confused when you brought it up because i was thinking hasn't he read that already?
Little fires took me forever to read. I was so bored.
Alchemist couldn't decide it's genre😂
LOL
I read the book after watching the show and I honestly prefer the show
How lame to read 3 short books.
Shows how little effort you're willing to put into your videos.
They've been going downhill for months.
Whatever dude
I'm sorry you feel that way! I'm definitely open to feedback. To clarify, I don't go off the length of the books for these videos, but I do try to prioritize the books on my physical tbr and these books are ones I just so happened to own.
The book is good though I read it after the show and it is very different but the book is good in its own way I just had a little difficulty with reading it (its been awhile so i am not entirely certain what it was)
