Have hide a key now. But Schlage sent two new locks do to constant failure and still constant failure with new ones.

Great Video, thanks. I have found this condition happens over time and requires the same periodic maintenance procedure. This is caused by the drive motor that gets out of sync, favoring the UNLOCK rotation.
What i have found is that "compressing" the spring is the better solution. And the real solition that Schlage should consider is providing the owners of these locks with a slightly long pin to better engage the cog.

When watching this video, I immediately realized the solenoid spring was my problem based on the exact symptom I was having with our dead bolt. I'm betting that over time, the spring ROTATES/SPINS, and moves it's position during use and from closing/SLAMMING the door shut. As soon as I opened my bead bolt up and saw that the bottom of that spring was not visible, I knew the spring was no longer in it's correct positioning. The moment I pulled that plastic "C" shaped part out, the spring bounced down and became visible. The lock immediately became usable again. Thank you for providing such a detailed visual of the workings of this particular dead bolt.

Another issue that was on mine was the spring had come off the guiderails for the solenoid that spins, and was barely hanging on when the motor spun but not creating enough torque to move the pin. I put the spring back onto the guide rails and that fixed my problem. Thanks for the video.

I installed three of these style locks almost three years ago and one by one all three succumbed to the "weak spring" malady. Glad I found this video as now all three are working properly. Many Thanks! One has to wonder how long this "fix" will last before another "redo" is required? Hopefully the folks at Schlage will have corrected/improved on the quality of springs used in their newer models....or not, because planned obsolescence sells more locks.

Thanks so much! I have 3 of these (on all 3 doors including into the garage), because I have a fear of getting locked out accidentally 😂 They’ve been great for 5 years with only battery replacements once a year, but the most used one failed. Went ahead and took the other 2 off and found the spring/ solenoid issue on both of those, though they were still working. Easier to do once I practiced on the first one, maybe prevent future problems, hopefully?
I’m afraid of the WiFi ones, because our WiFi services hiccups often.

Great video, as others said, clear and to the point!! Mine started doing this after just two weeks, and these fixes are mechanical which seem more likely after some time/use?? I watched the video while on hold for Schlage tech support (I asked--pronounced SH-LAY-GH). The rep I got worked tech support for over 20 years and seemed knowledgable. She said this can also happen to due software issues, and usually a factory reset fixes the problem. However, my particular lock failed to factory reset! First time she saw that. So I'm exchanging for a new one, but not confident with this style lock. Prior to this, I tried two Quikset locks, and both had faulty motor/mechanisms out of the box so I got the Schlage. I do think this design is better, having the software activate a solenoid, vs turning the motor manually... we shall see...

Hi and thank you for the video. At 4:13 there is a good picture of the pin, in your model the pin is rectangular in shape. In my unit (12 yrs old) it just a round pin. The pin worked itself up making it shorter which then would slip over the spring coils. I was able to carefully push it back down. I put a drop of crazy glue with some baking soda sprinkled over the hole so the pin would not slide back up. Fixed!!!

Jon great video I service 4 bldg by a University with about 400 units your spring issue I find that the spring actually compresses and does not allow the motor to pull the clutch pin enough to engage fully in the gear cog so once I stretch the spring and reassemble the units work properly.

Thank you for this video. I was able to repair my lock. But I found I had three problems. First I reset the spring tang for the solenoid. After reassembly the lock was better, but didn't always work. After disassembly I found that old grease on the spring loaded pin was old and gummy and it didn't move easily. I cleaned and re-lubricated the pin and it worked fine. But on final assembly, the 9 volt battery leads shorted and burned up the battery clip wires. It was a struggle to get the contacts out of the quick connect plug, but once I got them out and a new 9 volt battery clip soldered in, all was well.

The keypad at my house is having a similar issue. This video gives me a great insight as to what's going on. However, I do want to add/correct some stuff when I was trying to fix mine and hopefully that can help someone!
First of all, the motor is actually spinning the spring to bring the plastic bracket up and down, instead of pulling it up and down directly. The method mentioned in the video of clipping the bracket to the spring at resting position does not seem to work for me. Since the motor spins the spring, no matter where I clip the bracket, they would only work once and the spring will return to the original position when u lock/unlock the second time.
So my solution is to first clean the inside (spring, bracket, housing, etc.), remove old grease. Then, apply thin layer of lubricant (I use Sil-Glyde) on the moving pin, little sliding channel of the moving bracket, the surface where the pin slides on the bracket, and a very thin layer on the channel of the bracket where it slides on the spring.
Warning: be careful using lubricant. Only use small amount, especially for that spring area! Any excessive lubricant can clog up the spring and prevent the motor from spinning, and make it worse!

    • @mindus500
      @mindus500 6 місяців тому

Relaxing the spring was only a temp fix for me too. After several successful tests, it was back to infinite spinning about the time I got it back on the door.
Fwiw I noticed that no matter where I positioned the gray piece on the spring, there’s enough vertical give that it’d slip where it wanted after a turn or two - thus, the recurrence. So, I took the tiny spring off the screw just as a test. Fully engaged every time! So I don’t think the large spring is the culprit. I decided to go bold and trim the bottom ring on the screw spring to decrease resistance a touch. So far, so good! I’ve had one slight slip in tests but no endless spinning.
I have 4 of these and this is the only one to leave me unable to get into my house but I’m in a climate with extreme hots and colds and this one is on the north side of the house, so I suspect the cold altered the spring’s springiness :)

I bought a brand new unit and sometimes it would work and sometimes not. Finally quit working all together and I took it apart and re adjusted that piece that goes on top of that long spring and now it works 100% just makes me think this was a factory error.
I would have taken it back and exchanged it but the store is 2 hours away and didn't feel like wasting half a day.

Our issue is the inside button will correctly push in and unlock with the key, but with the key out and using the keypad (you can hear the keypad is working with the spring inside), the middle button where the key would fit doesn’t stay engaged down so the knob spins. Hi, I’m wondering if the new code is working? Can you hear the sound of the motor turning when you type in the code? Sounds like the engagement mechanism works if you’re able to lock it with the top button. I’m trying to think what it might be. My only guess is to try and enter a new code into the system and go from there but perhaps you have done that a few times.

Thx so much for your response, Jon - Yes - I have done that several times. With new codes and a factory reset, I took the entire lock apart per your wonderful video tutorial. Spring looks good - that little screw is in the right place. I may work better - but it still takes several times for it to engage the deadbolt - I hear the mechanism inside every time - but that damn deadbolt just doesn't engage regularly. I may have a lemon-lock.@@RightOnJonCrane

@@bhamwow I would call the company. They have sent me a couple replacement locks. One lock I had the battery would go bad in a week and the other the keypad stopped working. They mailed out a new one. It’s worth a shot. Sorry we couldn’t get it up and running.

So what do you do when you get locked out with out the key…

First fox was exactly what happened. Be careful as spring and nail will fall out and you may spend a minute tracking them down.

I followed all your steps, but it still didn’t work. Just spins. I don’t have a key, so the rectangle on the other side of the key didn’t go into the slot, and that assembly, the rectangle bulging part and the sort-of oval, fit together just one way. I think that might be the problem, but it seemed to me you said the key wasn’t needed. The three issues you described are all fine, and the battery works. Is it necessary to have the key, and if I don’t have one, how can I get one? Thanks.

I couldn’t get it to seat properly on reassembly without the key in it…weird quirk

Just a heads up that opening this lock voids the warranty.

I tried these. My Schlage deadbolt still doesn't work. No matter what postion in the spring I put it, it seems to self adjust to a non-working position. Not just a simple solenoid; the spring rotates, forcing the tang up or down. All parts appear ok, just doesn't end up in the correct position.
