Photography of Rebecca Keyes: Mongolian Kazakh Eagle Hunters - a way of life

These Kazakh eagle hunters, who live in the far western Bayan-Ulgii Province in the remote Altai mountain range of Mongolia today, are some of the last people who still truly deserve the title, “eagle hunters.” It is not merely a title to them, but a way of life. These hunters, who preserve an old tradition that’s been passed on from generation to generation, tame eagles and use them to hunt smaller animals, such as foxes and marmots. The families of these eagle hunters-originally from Kazakhstan, Russia and other parts of Mongolia-have migrated to this area for centuries. Today, many Kazakhs in Bayan-Ulgii maintain traditional semi-nomadic herding by moving with their animals several times a year, and living in a Kazakh style ger camp during the summer.
“Mongolian Kazakh Eagle Hunters - a way of life” by San Francisco-based photographer Rebecca Keyes, captures the every lives of these extraordinary people.

The exhibition is open for complimentary viewing Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM and during World Affairs programs.
