Honest to god, Every time I hear this song or see the ending orstart I start balling my eyes out. I just remember my childhood and everyone that is no longer with me, sitting down and watching it with me. RIP Dad, Mum, Sister, Aunt, Granda,Grandma and my 2 Brothers! Such an amazing film and in my opinion a cinematic master piece, There isn't a week that goes by when I don't watch this film. I never cry at anything, this just makes me so emotional and understand more about life.

I feel much the same way. I remember when my mother took my older brother and me to go see KH at the base theater on Fort Belvoir. I was 9 or 10 years old at the time. I came from a pretty strict military family (dad was a career naval aviator who had fought in WWII and Korea, but who had retired by the time the movie came out). I remember my mother's mouth hanging open in shock over Oddball's antics specifically and the whole of the movie's plot in general: the good guys going rouge and looking out for themselves for a change. Suffice to say, Mom did NOT like the movie. My brother and I, on the other hand, thought it was a hoot.

This is perhaps one of the most satisfying ending of a movie I have ever seen. Poor guys, thrown into the frontline, trying to make a fortune with a luckily found information and actually get away with it. And even willing to share it evenly, even with someone their country deems the enemy. Just phenomenal.

The exact lyrics of this song are:
Friends all try to warn me
But I held my head up high
All the time the warned me
but I only passed them by
They all tried to tell me
    but I guess I didn't care
    I turned my back
    Left them standing there.
All the burning bridges that have fallen after me
All the lonely feelings and burning memories
Everyone I left behind each time I closed the door
    burning bridges lost forever more.
Joey tried to help me find a job a while go
When I finally got it I didn't wanna go
The party Mary gave me when I just walked away
Now there's nothing left me for me to say
    All the burning bridges...
Years have passed and I keep thinking
    What fool I have been
I look back into the past and
    think of way back then
I know that I lost everything I thought I could win
I guess I should have listened to my friends.
    Burning bridges lost forever more.
    Burning bridges lost forever more.

Len Lesser... The only actor in history who was always capable to turn such small, almost insignificant characters like Bellamy in this movie or Gavin in Everybody Loves Raymond into beloved and memorable characters. Bellamy literally appears in just four short scenes in this movie (on phone with Oddball, verbal fight with Crapgame, on phone with Kelly and talking to the General), but that was more then enough for everybody to notice him. Of course, many years later, Lesser was immortalized for his legendary role of Uncle Leo on Seinfeld.

This movie was mostly shot in today Croatia, then-Yugoslavia, with portions of the movie shot in Italy. Scenes at General's headquarters were shot at Castle Fantast, now a hotel, in a town called Becej in today-Serbia.

I remember Don Rickles mailed a letter to Johnny Carson, telling him how the movie was going. Johnny read it on the air.

While the events shown in this movie are purely fictional, this movie is actually based on real event. In 1944, group of American renegade soldiers found a group of German deserters and found out about a huge stash of money and gold somewhere deep in Germany (not France, as it is in this movie) and they indeed made a push to get there. In the 60s, this robbery went into Guiness Book of Records as the biggest robbery of all time.. The true event is covered in the books "Nazi Gold: The Sensational Story of the World's Greatest Robbery - and the Greatest Criminal Cover-Up".

Hard to believe I used to hate this movie. I saw Kelly's Heroes four years ago, but skipped out before the last scene. I missed the best part.
The aestethics of a lone soldier walking away from the crowd to look through the ruins, and the imagery of the silhouetted truck driving away into a sunset, really make the movie a Western war heist movie. All the best elements of the best genres in one movie.

Every single actor that appeared in this movie, no matter how big or small his role is (this is one of not many movies in which no women appear or are credited), was immortalized in this movie. By the time of this movie, only Eastwood, Savallas, Rickles, O'Connor and Sutherland were well known actors (they are first four credited, appropriately). All others were TV and movie veterans, but until this movie they never had their big break.
