No, most people didn't care at all about Thor. It was Iron Man and RDJ that were carrying Marvel. The Thor movies were almost entirely to set up other movies (The first was to set up Thor for Avengers 1, Thor 2 was to introduce the reality stone for the Thanos conflict, and 3 acted as a precurser to Infinity War). Put storywriting aside to make sense of Thor's character writing and sympathize with him. Thor's character in the MCU was set to deform and be reborn anew. And yet everyone agreed that the hulks ability to handle gamma rays meant he should be the one to wield the infinity gauntlet since gamma rays are way more dangerous then lightning. This Thor could have handled it. But in Endgame he wasn't in his maximum form at least psychologically. The gauntlet needs mental strength as well as physical.
