    This is Part 3 of a 7 part video series documenting the replacement of cylinder heads on the Toyota 3.4 L V6 5VZ-FE Engine. There’s many reasons why you might find yourself needing to remove the heads. You could have a suspected bad head gasket or cracked head. You could have a suspected issue with the head, like a burnt valve, and you need to rebuild the head. It could be because you’re rebuilding the entire engine. Whatever your reason to pull the cylinder heads, this video series will walk you through all the steps necessary to get the job done successfully.
    In Part 3, we continue with the engine tear down, doing everything necessary to finally pull the heads off the block. We start with getting things disconnected from the heads like the alternator & bracket, power steering pump & bracket, transmission dip stick tube, intake manifold, wiring harness, and exhaust manifolds. We next show the proper sequence to get the exhaust and intake cams off the heads. Finally, we show the proper loosening sequence to get the heads off the block.

    Dear Timmy and Sean:
    As a South African now living “Down Under”, thank you for taking much time and putting the effort into making this tutorial video set - to help others rebuild of their beloved Toyota 5vz-fe engine. This was a truly professional job! Without your dedication, I would have failed at saving my Landcruiser Prado. I am so grateful and wish you both all the best as you selflessly inspire others to do the same!

    It's worth repeating: You guys are hands down the VERY BEST channel for working on classic Toyota's. Best teachers on youtube. Your lesson in a previous video about servicing rear axle ( outer bearing/components replacement ) for a 2000 Tacoma, and how you discovered the best method for installing the new bearing retainer BACKWARDS for a better inner seal in that particular model, along with firsthand proof via a test you came up with using axle grease to see a witness mark, proved invaluable.

    Nice video, very informative as usual.
    When I did the work on my engine I forgot to secure the power steering pump, I came back the next day and it had slipped and dumped all of the power steering fluid all over the drive way. I felt quite foolish as I was cleaning up the mess, because securing that was something that should have been obvious.
    Also I too had a rough time with getting the exhaust manifolds free of the crossover pipe, I ended up taking them loose from the heads, taking the heads off, then taking the manifolds and crossover as a unit off. After I got it free from the vehicle, I was able to dismantle the crossover pipe from the manifolds on my bench.

      @TimmyTheToolman  Рік тому

      Things happen and we all make mistakes. At least it wasn't a super costly mistake. Yeah, those exhaust manifold studs and nuts can be a serious pain in the butt. It was a frustrating day but we finished strong.

  • @brucewayne2773
    @brucewayne2773 Рік тому +2

    For me , after having removed the cross over pipe, removing both heads with the headers still attached ( down pipe disconnected) was the easiest way to remove them. Re installation was the same, install the exhaust manifolds to both heads and then re-install. Did my entire job using my Bendpak lift made the job much easier. Reinstalling that cross over pipe was a big pain in the butt though.

    Yes yes great to see the cylinder heads come off! And the diag on the coolant loss, so quick after all the work you guys did. One question, I've read elsewhere that cracks can be repaired. In this case is it just not worth it, or does the location of the crack not allow a repair?

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Рік тому +1

      Yes, they can be repaired. The experienced machined at Yota1, this guy Allen, says he does repair cracks. But, once the cracks extend into a coolant jacket, he doesn't attempt to repair them.

    Timmy I need your help. I had a bolt strip the other day while I was cracking the bolts off the bearing caps. I have tried two different bolt extractors, the first being a hammer in, which took forever to hit in, then I had to file a metal flange off the head of the extractor to get a socket on, which when it got on immediately just turned out of the hole. The second of which a twist on, snapped In the hole, which unfortunately means I now have a hardened bit preventing me from drilling the bolt out. I tried hammering on a 3/8 socket, and as a last resort vice grips. After the bolt extractor snapped in the hole I tried redrilling the hole with bigger titanium drill bits, then when that didn't work I tried starting small to incrementally increase the hole size. I then tried that all again except with hardened cobalt bits instead of titanium. I am running out of ideas, all I can think of is cutting off the head of the bolt with a cut off disk. I am not stoked with that idea. Thanks so much if you spent the time to read this.
