Forest in the life of peasants

Forest and river resources were a good help in the economy of Siberian peasants. Russian development of the region began with active hunting for fur-bearing animals, which almost led to their extermination. Gradually, as the Eastern Slavs moved to the region, they mastered local fishing, collecting mushrooms and berries, and pine nuts. The Old Believers set up apiaries and began trading honey.
Narrated by Anna Yurievna Mainicheva, Doctor of Historical Sciences, leading researcher at the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Novosibirsk. The video was prepared as part of the project “Important Things: Traditions and Life of Russian Migrants in Siberia,” implemented with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives in 2023-2024.
