I used de natured alcohol and a Qtip. Took longer to get all the stuff out that to do it. After I took some saddle soap on a qtip and scrubbed the lettered area. Then I carefully treated the whole cover to a thin layer of leather milk and WOW that was the ticket. I love your videos. It has encouraged me to get into Bible rebinding.
The book cover I needed the gold embossing removed on was synthetic, so I was afraid to use wd-40 😰. I tried acetone first and it worked within seconds! Just thought I'd share!
Beau, this is the most valuable and helpful set of instructions that is on the internet. Thanks for demonstrating how this looks and works...I very much appreciate it as I have far too many names on my Bibles.
I have a Bible I ordered for some one as a gift but I got the last name wrong so I'm going to attempt to remove the name re-gift the Bible. I ordered another one for the person I was gifting one to.
I wonder if good old Tandy Leather's 'Leather Sheen' in whatever gloss one desires would bring things back to life as far as the little bit of gloss that is removed. WD40 and duct tape. What would we do without either? Great video.
The previous owner of our house painted the walls very messy. Getting drops of paint on the crown molding and base boards. We used oven cleaner to remove the paint from the wood and it worked perfect. I wonder if oven cleaner would work just as good for this?
I like this idea, but the WD40 made me nervous due to its chemical components absorbing into the leather, and then later transferring back into the skin. I substituted it with clear, unscented HAND SANTIZER GEL gel which is 62% denatured alcohol. It worked extremely well with a soft toothbrush, and the gel was very easy to control from dripping over onto the sides. Also, letting the gel sit on the leather, it actually liquified some of the leather dye, which made it really easy to blend the color in with the toothbrush over the name. Summary: Same method as this video, but with an effective, NON-TOXIC solvent!
Not sure what "white spirit" is so I am not much help there. I chose WD40 because we have used it to clean tons of things all my life, from the floor, counter tops, boots and glass to even removing chewing gum out of hair... So, it is a natural selection to help remove the gold foil and lubricate the leather. Check out a google search for ways you can clean with WD40
Hi Beau. May be a UK thing...but borrowed this from Wiki... "White spirit or mineral spirits, also known as mineral turpentine, turpentine substitute, petroleum spirits, solvent naphtha, Varsol, Stoddard solvent, or, generically, "paint thinner", is a petroleum-derived clear liquid used as a common organic solvent in painting." I saw someone else use this on UA-cam with a Bible name, but don't know if it's ok for goatskin...
Thanks! I bought a used Bible and was disappointed that they didn't put that in the description online, but found this and I'm glad!

Couldn't believe I found a video on how to do this! Thanks for sharing! So helpful :) God Bless!
You can find basically anything on UA-cam

This was such a great help. I tried this and it took the name right off. Highly recommend this.
Thanks Bro, I see these half priced in stores, was always timid to buy one, but now I will buy. Thanks again.

If I do this on cowhide, will it leave a dark blotch?
Rubbing alcohol will take about 1 minute to remove name. apply withe q-tip then use old toothbrush to scrub.

Worked perfectly!
Thank you so much for this great help!
Could I use this on leather touch
Can this work on shoes?
Do you also know how to keep the gold imprints in leather covers from fading or rubbing off? Thanks for this video.
Sorry brother, wish I knew that answer
you sound like dr. phil 😂 thanks for making this.
This is very helpful! Thank you
Will this work on gold leafed hardware?

Awesome! Thanks for this very informative video.
Iwas told a thin layer lf clear nail polish
So this is for personalised note books too??
How is the removal different on genuine leather?
Love your videos. One tip...WD40 displaces water. Water Displacement 40.
Thanks for this. Does white spirit damage goatskin? Is there a reason why you use WD40?

Use throttle body cleaner. Takes 5 seconds
“Non acetone” nail polish remover will take it off in seconds.
I used nail polis remover cotton buds ant cotton ball that's it and no more stick that can also damage the leather surface😊
Good Tip, thanks!
Nice!
GOOF OFF WORKS IMMEDIATELY, WITH ALMOST NO SCRATCHING AT ALL!!!
Be very very careful on leathers that are not black because goof off will also remove the color and leave faded and discolored spots.
Use an earbud!
