    This is a beast of a lens. I use it for shooting skateboarding videos so for me the IS was a lot more important than the maximum aperture.

    It is a nice lens for travelers. I have used a classic cheap 50mm f/1.8 for my full frame camera and it was too narrow for travel photography. With the 50mm the buildings or general sightseeings doesn't always fit on the frame. With the 50mm the background of portraits in front of sightseeings is very small. I like the portraits I shoot during my travels to have a recognizable background. So the classic 24-70mm lens isn't useful with all it's focal lengths for travel photography. The 16-35mm is much better. The 35mm is good and permits a little shallow depth of field even at f/4. Most lenses of smartphones have equivalent focal lengths between 28-35mm. So the 35mm is a very versatile focal length. However the 35mm brings some restrictions to architectural and landscape photography. Rarely everything fits completely in the frame. The 16mm focal length is ideal for that. Wide enough for everything and doesn't cause very unflattering barrel distortion like wider focal lengths mostly do.
    By the way the 16-35 permits filters but the polarized filters at 16mm don't always work good. The angle of field is two wide and the polarization effect isn't smooth from corner to corner.

    A rather late post. I must have read different reviews of this lens a few years ago.
    I thought, but stand to be corrected, that this was not one of Canon's best lens.
    Recently, I purchased a barely used mint used example and am very happy with it.
    The 16 -35 2.8, for the type of wide angle and landscpape shooting I do, f4 is all I need; generally use f8 etc for landscape work.

    Wonderfully detailed review Dustin! Just bought this and sold the 17-40. A little pricey, but the newer technology, sharpness, IS, and extra mm in width, should be a bonus in landscape and architectural captures.

    Thank you for the awesome review! I wasn't sure if I should get the 16-35 f4 or the 2.8. I knew that the 2.8 version had some really soft edges, but it seems like the new 16-35 f4 has much better sharpness in the corners. This will for sure be my next landscape lens, especially since the price dropped to $999 on B&H

    Thanks for an excellent informative review. I want go to full frame and I am going buy a 6D. I wanted a wide angle lens to use in conjunction with my 24-105mm L a 100-400mm II L, and a few primes. I have a EF-S 10-22mm which I bought to use on my 60D but I couldn't use it on a 6D. I did look at the 16-35mm f/2.8 but it was a lot more expensive for a couple of extra 'f 'stops. As I want to stick with Canon Lens I will go ahead and buy the 16-35 f/4.

      Dustin Abbott I know it's not the same quality, but for the size of this lens would the 10-18 not be a better option for a cropped sensor? I've heard some very good things about it and sounds by far the best of this size of EF-S lens. I'm thinking of getting both the 10-18 for the 7II and the 16-35 for the 5DIII to give me other options and no need to change lenses in the field.

    Back when I shot film and pushing color to ASA 800 produced golf-ball grain, I was really insistent on lenses no slower than f/2.8. These days, ISO 3200 cleans up pretty well. I'm not so worried about losing a stop of lens speed.

    Dustin, I have this lens and it's probably my favorite for landscapes. But I also enjoy the 24-105 F4 L for landscapes and as a good walk around lens, but it's an older lens, and the image quality isn't on the same level as the 16-35 F4. Do you have any suggestions for an alternative to the canon 24-105 F4, that would match the image quality of this 16-35?... Would the sigma 24-105 be a better option?Thanks.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому

      The Sigma 24-105 is the one recent Sigma that I haven't reviewed. I like the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC, though it obviously won't have as much reach as the 24-105. Having both the f/2.8 aperture and stabilization is nice, though.

    Dustin, I was considering this lens for doing handheld video because it has OIS. Does that lens noise get picked up on video even with a shotgun mic? UPDATE: I should've watched the whole video before I posted my question. You do mention that the lens is noisy and could be picked up during video recording. Do you still recommend Tamron for video instead?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  7 років тому

      I don't know that the Tamron is a lot quieter for video. I would consider them about the same. You should be fine with a shotgun mic with either lens unless you are in a completely quiet environment with a lot of focus changes.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому +1

      +Manuel Amaral That's a good question. I don't for certain, but my guess is yes. This lens has only a 77mm front element, so you should have plenty of room to avoid vignette with your LEE filter.

      +Manuel Amaral , there are two different types of 77 mm rings to your Lee filters. You have the get the ring 77 mm W.A version (wide angle version), if not you will have some vignettes using your normal 77 mm ring. I had the same prob.

    I am currently trying to decide between this lens and the 2.8. I shoot a lot of functions, so I am indoors a lot and light is obviously sometimes hard to come by. But I am a bit concerned about paying a $1500 price tag for 10yr old lens that is not as sharp as the newer F/4 version which is highly regarded. Do you have any advice to aid in my decision? Yes I want the extra stop down, but it's also 10yrs old, more expensive and not as sharp. What do you suggest? Fork out the money? Or will the F/4 do?

    i was looking for a wide angle lens for a canon 1dx mark ii and i know i want a 16-35 for video. the f/4 offers image stabilization as well as a lower price point but the f/2.8 offers better low light which may be a deal breaker for me and the f/4. Do you see it a big enough issue to spend the extra $1,000 or would the f/4 suffice?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому

      I personally would probably go for the f/4 version. The f/2.8 is better (in some areas), but not by a major margin, and it falls a bit behind in other areas (like vignette).

    Does the 16-35mm f/4 IS deliver better/same Sunstars than the f/2.8 variant considering its 9 blade Diaphragm over the f/2.8's 7 blade Diaphragm?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому

      Nachiket Kulkarni - That is a matter of taste. You can see them compared in this video here: ua-cam.com/video/ZLUwULtvR1o/v-deo.html . I personally like the 16-35mm f/2.8's sunstar a bit better, but the tradeoff is that it has much poorer flare resistance and is a weaker lens overall compared to this one.

      Jeff - I do have a written review on the 70-300L that can be found here: dustinabbott.net/2013/04/canon-70-300mm-f4-5-6l-is-review-the-ultimate-zoo-lens/. I've got two other reviews to publish right now, but I might be able to do a 70-300L video review at some point. I've certainly got a TON of great images with it to make the point.

    Thx for the review Dustin. I need something in the 18-21mm range for my 5d2 that has decent coma control, CA control (which Canon are great for), and doesn't weigh a ton as I also carry a 4x5 kit. Only very occasionally I'd need something slightly wider than my Canon 24mm f2.8, that I'm happy with IQ wise, and use for about 80 percent of my landscapeshots. On weight and reported good performance in the 20-24mm range I had shortlisted the 16-35F4L, but it seems a lot of range just for a 20mm occasional use. Would the IQ of the 16-35mm match my 1990's 24mm allowing me to leave that at home, and would it give similar performance around 20mm? Otherwise would you suggest anything else to fill this 18-21mm gap in my current lenses please? May I ask what was your one-click distortion correction method around 11:45- in the vid ? Many thanks! Jim

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому

      +jimioutback The IQ at 20 or 24mm should definitely surpass your old prime lens. The distortion correction can be found in either Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw

      +LeeMei The lens will work fine as a general purpose, walkaround lens. Just know that the equivalent 25.6mm on the wide end with a crop sensor body isn't as intriguing, although the 56mm equivalent on the long end is more so. I would recommend that you look at a lens made for crop sensors if you really want a wide angle option.

      I've used the EF-S 10-22mm in the past and think it is a nice lens. If you don't mind a manual focus prime, I really like some of the wide angle Samyang/Rokinon lenses. I've got a 12mm Rokinon f/2 for mirrorless that I just love!

    • @smith507
      @smith507 8 років тому

      I also use a 60D and if you don't really need the weather sealing or the 10fps of the mark II the extra 2 megapixels aren't that much of an upgrade.
      However, the lens you buy is gonna last forever, regardless of which bodies you buy in the future. Far better investment.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  8 років тому

      This lens is an excellent one and would serve you well should you make the move to full frame in the future. The new 80D actually has better image quality than the 7DII and might be another alternative.

    • @smith507
      @smith507 8 років тому +1

      My thoughts exactly, the 80D has significantly better Dynamic Range (because of the on-chip ADC), higher megapixel count and around 85% of its features in a cheaper package. Although I would aim for the 6D Mk II whenever that is announced in 2017.

      Just take the Rokin out of the picture. The bigger question is whether or not you need the 2.8 aperture. If you do, I recommend the Tamron 15-30 VC. If you don't, then go with the 16-35mm f/4L IS. I don't really recommend the 16-35mm f/2.8 - it has been surpassed by better lenses.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  6 років тому

      It does, but just know that on a 700D the focal range isn't as exciting due to the crop factor. A good alternative for APS-C (like your 700D) is the Tamron 10-24mm VC lens. You can find a review of it on my channel.

    • @jonrolfson1686
      @jonrolfson1686 6 років тому +1

      For the 700D you might want to look at Canon's EF-S 10 -18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM. This lens was designed the same effective width for APS-C cameras. Though it is slower than the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM it has very effective IS. I have had good results with the EF-S 10 -18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM on both a T6S (760D) and an 80D.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  9 років тому +1

      +Dirty South You can put it on any Canon camera with an EF mount. Just know that on a 7DII the camera's crop factor (1.6x) will affect the focal length, giving you a full frame equivalent of 25.6-56mm. If that's fine with you, then the lens will perform wonderfully. It just won't be as wide as lenses designed for a crop sensor camera (like the 10-22mm)
