  • When you’re caught up in the day-to-day challenge of earning a living, it’s easy to let time get away from you. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months, months into years. It becomes all too easy to get up in the morning and do things the way you’ve always done them, isn’t it?
Over that time, things around you - things that impact you - are changing. If you don’t change with them, you’ll find your income slowly dropping. As a technician, that means taking the time to keep with the technology and repair techniques you must continuously master to stay at the top of your profession. As a shop owner, it means taking the time to review your business model and compare its fit to the current market.
Let’s take a look at the big picture. Today, vehicle owners are keeping their cars longer than ever. And with good reason. The overall quality of cars being sold is higher than it’s ever been. Failures are few and far between, with cars lasting 2-3 times longer than they did when I first started driving. The technology and system designs are advancing, as you know, at a remarkable pace. That technology requires investments in the tools and equipment needed to properly service and diagnose them.
And your customers are changing, too. Millenials, Generations X, Y and Z, Baby Boomers - the tags are numerous and the information you need to successfully earn and keep their business can be overwhelming. But there is one customer segment that has been around a while, and is typically close to half your existing customer base. Understanding their needs and expectations can give you an edge over your competition you may not already enjoy.
Who is represented in this customer base? You’ll have to watch this edition of The Trainer to find out!
