  • My good friend Joel, KC4WZB, loaned me his brand new Yaesu FTdx10. When I say loaned, I mean he picked it up at Ham Radio Outlet and brought it straight to me, so I could unbox it and shoot a series of videos, exploring the capabilities of this latest offering from Yaesu.
    This is the fifteenth video in a series of videos I will be producing to show the capabilities of the Yaesu FTdx10. In this video I put the FTdx10 and the IC-7300 through the paces receiving CW signals.

    Thank you for the notch filter trick, it's made all the difference in contesting with the IC-7300! And thanks for the rig comparison. I plan to replace my IC-7300 with an FTdx10 but for now your notch filter trick has given some breathing room.

      I’m so glad you found it helpful. The IC-7300 has its merits for sure. Yaesu just struck gold by mixing superheterodyne, roofing filters, and SDR together. And the Yaesu DSP is a bit more advanced.

    That notch trick for the 7300 is a game changer for me. I never had considered this. Thanks!

      You can set the Notch filter to wide and use it as a type of Contour control, like the Yaesu radios have. You can sweep it across the audio spectrum while trying to pull out a weak SSB signal and it can help knock the noise down next to where their voice is most intelligible in the audio spectrum.
      The only downside is when you actually need your Notch filter to knock out heterodyne while also trying to pull a weak signal out of the noise floor. I guess you have to choose between the heterodyne or the noise at that point.

    In 12 days I will hve had my ftdx10 one year.. I get more comfortable with it each day., It truly is a great rcvr.. I had been considering adding ft991, for vhf/uhf in addition to hf.. I seldom use vhf/uhf but that radio Interests me .. new toy syndrome I suppose..

      The FT-991A is a fine transceiver. It’s the one radio to own if you will only own one radio. It is a great VHF/UHF primary transceiver and backup HF, if you have an FTdx10, FTdx101, etc. as a primary HF rig. I shot a video comparing the FT-991A to the FTdx10 on HF receive. The FT-991A held its own. It didn’t get trounced.

    When we will see a shotout betwween FTdx10 and FTdx-101? I want to change my IC-7300. great rig...easy to use, A lot of TRX for that money...but, I want more, I need more...(I think that I will make a support group for people that have this problem with TRX's...allways need more). I hunt for DX and sota stations (QRP's)...and I need something better on week signals (CW)...And I just want to know if is worth to buy 101d instead of FTdx10 (101d is cost double the money of the dx10).

      FTdx10 is a single receive version of FTdx101D, without VC Tune. If it had VC Tune, it would most likely be tied with the FTdx101D at number 1 on Sherwood Engineering’s list for receiver dynamic range. Technically it is number 2. The production model Flex radios don’t currently exceed 99dB, which puts them down below 15 in the list. The Flex 6700 in Sherwood’s list was especially modified for Sherwood’s test. He covers that in footnote “y”, at the bottom of his list.
      But, even if the FTdx10 was third in the world, that is quite an achievement for $1,700 radio.

    Hi, I have been going thru your series on the FTdx10. I know this videos are 2 years old and wanted to know if this was still the top contender or has something else come out that you would recommend above this? Thanks. Love you videos.

      @n4hnhradio  Рік тому +1

      Still a top contender. Only the FTdx101D or MP can top it.

      You’re very welcome! It’s a beast of a transceiver. None are perfect but the dx10 is mighty close where it counts.

    The Icom 7300 Full Break-in Relay is Loud and obnoxious. The Semi-Breakin is ok, but sending is less noisy. The FTDX10 I would like to hear the relay with Full Break-In.

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio  2 роки тому +2

      I answered this for someone else. You can definitely hear the relay. I run semi so it doesn’t bother me. But yes, you can hear the relay. That’s another thing I like about the FTdx5000MP. I trigger my amplifier using the solid-state output from the radio and there is no relay chatter, even driving an amp.

    APF is great and not unique to Yaesu. The IC7610 has it as do other brands.

      @@n4hnhradio the most life threatening situation I’m facing currently is actually CW. (CW = Crabby Wife) We’re planning the kitchen renovation that I will be working on shortly, She will make heavy use of APF (Adult Pi$$¥ Face) and she will definitely Zero In on me... she can Spot radio use, an I will end up with a significant new Notch as a result.

      Learning CW...you don't need to stay at TRX. I have learn CW by apps on the phone and making mp3's with articles in CW. So, even that I have a lot of qrm ("go to shop", "trow the garbage", "you didn't bring me any flowers" etc...). Short story: what you do in SSB with 100W...you will do in CW with 10W. And more...the music of CW is just fantastic...and also...one huge benefit: when you go to bed to sleep...put at low volume CW...you will fall asleep in 30 seconds. My gear for sota/portable use...is with 3W QRP and three recycled elements from laptop batteries...
