Finally a demystifying video for all MP 5,1 enthusiasts. At some point, I'm sure we're all going to upgrade (may bite the bullet and go Mac Studio while we all wait for the silicon MP). Hey thanks Gregory, I’m waiting to see what the next Mac Pro has in store, My 5,1 is running great, Big Sur, Monterey and Windows 10 all thanks to Martin Lo’s Opencore Package. The Studio is tempting but I will hold off. Pro Tools is not natively running on M1 yet, it runs in Rosetta and while it seems to work well for folks I’m holding off for now anyway.
@@MacSoundSolutions I must be the odd man out as I had no idea something like that existed (still chugging away on Mojave). I’ll have to look into Martin Lo’s OpenCore package, test the degree of difficulty and go for it when there’s a lull in client in-flow.
@@gregoryvilfranc9306 Time to move from Mojave dude! I believe Apple just delivered the last security updates to Mojave and Catalina, so we're almost being forced to go to Big Sur as the minimum OS supported with updates and upgrades.
Great tutorial! Another thing you can do to make life easier when installing PCI cards is to take out all the drive sleds! Only takes a few seconds but that extra inch/2.3cm makes a big difference when you are fiddling around Slot 3 or 4.
Thanks! This is all great information about things that I have been wondering. BTW, someone may have advised you that .plist is not - as you already know, "play list" but it's also not "program list" it is "property list" as these files have been in OSX since it started and they contain all the properties or preferences of applications within the OS. I know it's a small thing, but I think over time you probably want to know what it's called. I actually thought it was call the preferences list - right up until I wrote this comment! According to several source online it is the property list. So many Ps!
I have been corrected that even though the jumper cable is in the correct position it's really pin 1 to pin 3 not 5 and 3 but again the jumper is in the correct place in the video.
My CMP with a Hex 3.46GB Xeon processor serving 3x 32GD DRAM is running at very high memory throughput speed which is exactly what a ProTools system needs. It is not slow by any means. 300 tracks at 24/48 is comfortable and I have added 270 high demand (half mono, half stereo) Waves and Sonnox plugins with no issues. I can do 64x64 via USB-C and simultaneously another 64x64 as AVB Audio thru one Ethernet port in PT 2023.6. I’m finally happy that I can cover my needs
@@gordonblank6845 I have seen that done, but honestly I never sleep my mac cause my last USB c card did not like sleep either ejecting hard drives. May give it a go, thanks
So an update on this with my Pro Tools issue. it tuns out I had two system drives mounted both called ‘Macintosh hd” Pro Tools doesn’t like this and crashes. Once I unmounted the second Macintosh hd all is good….
As always, this is awesome stuff. I always wanted to try this but never had really enough justification to spend the money to do so as my only Thunderbolt 3 things are a dock and a display and other Macs. Linked in the Thunderbolt 3 section of the Definitive Mac Pro Upgrade Guide as this gives nice high level view.
Thanks man, me too as far as buying one but they gave it to me based on my video on their Bluetooth Wi-Fi install. My first perk from my UA-cam efforts! I wish I had more thunderbolt things to test it out with and I know there is more to understand about firmware etc.
Suggestion to your audience: use a long shaft #1 Phillips screw driver when mounting and un-mounting the finicky brackets securing your PCIe cards. Also, Thunderbolt performance is not the reason one might add this to their 5,1 MacPro. The real reason is simply to use the TB protocol. Don’t expect newfound speed, just peripherals availability.
That is pretty covered in the video, as I talk about thunderbolt audio interfaces and monitors. The speeds are faster using a thunderbolt ssd over a usb 3.1 drive with a pcie usb card by about 500MBs. Yes the screwdriver makes it much easier to put the holding bar back in but you have to be careful as to not slip into one of your pcie cards, most likely would not happen but if your a klutz like me it might.
@@MacSoundSolutions I did watch your video. A speedy application or media drive is not important to most music users. But interfaces are few enough already without losing half of them to a protocol.
That was true but thanks to the opencore developers and flashed for Mac Titan Ridge cards they work! but it’s not plug and play, you have to boot and then restart but then your good to go.
@@MacSoundSolutions mine was working great I bought a flashed one from their eBay store but UAD rolled out an update recently and now I’m having issues with the Thunderbolt card Losing connection with my Apollo and crashing on UA-cam video streaming sites
@@DEADIKATEDbummer, not great. I have since pulled my Titan Ridge, I just don’t need thunderbolt I got the McFiver so faster internal drive speeds and USB C ports.
The Thunderbolt protocol is synthesized from PCIe 2.0 data but don’t expect TB3 speeds. This card will bring your CMP into the TB protocol but not the speed. To many the protocol is all-important, the speed is not. BTW, I did not have any of the sleep/wake issues at all with my install. If you have questions, fire away. I’d have to go into my notes and I’ll be happy to.

Congratulations on the video! Do you think it's possible for "Titan Ride" to work on a MacPro 1.1 with flash for 2.1? It still does amazing things with audio I'm just wanting to improve the latency since I have a thunderbolh interface here...
I had mine working with a Alpine Ridge. The titan ridge didn’t work. What I did was installed the Alpine Ridge. I then used a apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adaptor. I plugged my display into the adaptor and the adaptor into the alpine ridge and it worked plug and play. Now for whatever reason after I haven’t booted it up in a while it no longer works.
Strange, are you using Opencore? I have to edit the config.plist set false to true under thunderbolt near the top every time I update to Martin Lo’s latest OC package, currently running 0.8.0 and the updated config.plist for Monterey 12.5.1
@@MacSoundSolutions never used Opencore because I hadn't updated my GPU yet so I could upgrade to Monterey. Hi. I have a mac pro tower but no gpu that has a thunderbolt port. My question is why is it after I've installed my nvidia gtx 1060 graphic card to the cpu, connect hdmi from the cpu directly to tv, but there's no display on? I've turned on the cpu, there was a boot up sound, meaning the cpu is ok, right?
What version of Mac OS are you running, are you using opencore? Some GPUs don’t display anything out the hdmi until fully booted the OC boot screen might be showing up on one of the display ports not hdmi. Check this out for more info on Nvidia GPUs and opencore Legacy patcher here on your tube at Mr Macintosh channel.
@Mac Sound Solutions inc. thanks for sharing the extra info. I have to wait 2 more weeks before I can go to my sister's. no I have not tried it but others have had success, you still need to boot and reboot I believe to get the display to be recognized if its connected over thunderbolt.
200mbps bump? Not bad... I use the inateck 3.2 pcie 16x card and also get about 650mbps with an external nvme drive. I dunno if 200mbps is worth the money or the tinker time, but its not insignificant.

@@ScottWozniakhi! I’m having the problems with my RME Fireface 800 FireWire audio Interface, similar as yours. So you 1. Turn ON your Mac Pro. Then it boots into the OS. Then you restart it, and everything is OK? Are you on Monterey?
Mac Pro 5,1 keeps soldiering on! Can you get TB3 on HP Z840 / Z820?? I have several Hackintosh Z840 / Z820 with the official HP TB2 card. I'm still happy with the performance of TB2 peripherals - just curious.
Couldn't one just take a razor and cut that trace that leads to pin #11? That would be easier than desoldering the jumper. Also, I was thinking about the issue of getting into a bind with PCI slots. I have a 2.0 USB card in my 5,1 for all the USB devices. But with that Thunderbolt card, I imagine I could connect an external 3.0 USB hub, thus freeing up that PCI port and probably having better data throughput.
You can connect a usb 3.0 hub to the Titan ridge, that’s what I have also. The Titan ridge doesn’t support usb 2 without it being connected to the logic board. But seeing the Mac Pro has plenty of usb 2.0 it’s not necessary.
Thank you for this. I was wondering about getting one of those for my macpro. Before, I only saw people saying it works and I was not aware of the cons... So very informative... And I find very cool that you included a comparison with the Sonnet cards. I have an Allegro USB-C, which I think must be the same as yours as it is also rated for USB3 gen 2 10Gbps, except the one I have has USB-C connectors. So I also found it interesting to know what I could gain with such card. So, thanks
Thanks Pierre, it is nice to get the speed bump over the USB 3.1 gen 2 card and yes I would guess my card although USB A connectors should be the same speed as it was Sonnets higher end card. One thing to note that I meant to put in the video is that USB 2.0 devices don’t work connected to the Titan Ridge only usb 3.0 and up but seeing the Mac Pro has several usb 2.0 ports it’s not an issue.
@@MacSoundSolutions interesting. I have the 2 port Sonnet USB 3.1 gen 2 card, need usb 3 to connect the BlackMagic speed editor. What cards are available for the raid 0 NVMe setup? Any speed difference depending on what slot I put my one NVMe adapter card, single NVMe card, into? Mostly I got this to run Resolve.
@@larryvaughn5843 sonnet makes one www.sonnettech.com/product/legacyproducts/m2-4x4-pcie-card.html and so does OWC, Squid is another. A single NVME will only reach 1500MBs in any slot as far as I know it’s these 4XNVME in the 16X slot that have a switch so each NVME gets its own 4x channel. So you get close to 6000MBs if you raid 0 all four of them. I think raiding 3 and using 1 for your OS is the way to go. So a single card will only get a single 4X bandwidth. And I’m sure I’m not technically saying this exactly the way it works but you get the idea.
@@MacSoundSolutions I get the same speed with my 970 evo not plus with an $11 pcie heatsync adapter card. Tiny card not much bigger than the 970 compared to the other adapters.
It was pretty easy, you have to turn off SIP install opencore I use Martin Los package for 5,1 and install Catalina or later. I did not do any power mods but the gigabyte version has less power consumption than some other 5700xts. You have to do the installs before putting the rx5700xt in the Mac Pro. So that means using a Mac GPU to do the installs first. One thing to know is when the Opencore boot loader is visible it only gets displayed out of one of the 5700xts ports so if your using only hdmi you may not see the bootpicker, I have three monitors and the boot loader shows up on one of my monitors connected via DisplayPort.
Nice job Lance! What are you using to effectively create a bootable backup? I'm using Carbon Copy 6 (Big Sur 11.6.2, OC 0.7.5) and it's not copying over the main OS files. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Hey Bart, I cloned it once using ccc and it did the same thing you are talking about it didn’t seem to work as a bootable disk, then I reformatted the drive in APFS, the main drive not the sub and then Corbin copy cloner said this time around that it needed to format the drive to make it bootable and it it reported that it was bootable after cloning, I also named it Macintosh HD TB so I would know that I was booting off it. And I swear I did boot off it. I have been told by TSIAlex on macrumours it’s not possible who I totally respect, but I would swear that I was able to. I’ve since returned that drive so can’t try it again. Another guy said he has also booted from a external thunderbolt drive. You do have to make sure by looking insystem profiler that the disk is always showing up under the thunderbolt connected items, because if it switches to usb it will read it as an external, but when it sees it as thunderbolt it sees it as an internal pcie drive.
@@MacSoundSolutions Which version of CCC are you using? According to their help documentation they are no longer creating bootable copies by default and recommend using "legacy bootable backup assistant" in the dropdown.

Not that I’m aware of but maybe a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter might work. The Sonnet McFiver supports AVB but you need to use opencore to fix the 10gigabit issue. And it does not have Thunderbolt.
you need to get a dsiplay port cable to go from your gpu into the titan ridge, that should do it. May take boot and reboot and a hot plug for it to show up the first time.

Was it pre flashed for Mac?
It really is silly that they dropped support for these computers. They are still perfectly tenable computers for so many people even in 2022.
True and why I’m still using mine in 2022 and beyond. The new 2019 Mac pros are nice but still too pricey.
I was thinking about getting this card myself but I don't want to deal with the restart hassles.. Thanks Lance, Very informative video!
Hey 🎊 🎉!
Isn’t something better than nothing.
Thank you for the update.
The sleep mod can be accomplished by covering up the pin with tape without removing the resistor. Easier a lot easier.

So an update on this with my Pro Tools issue. it tuns out I had two system drives mounted both called ‘Macintosh hd” Pro Tools doesn’t like this and crashes. Once I unmounted the second Macintosh hd all is good….
Thanks for this. I will stick w/ what I have in my Mac Pro 5,1 for the time being. But this is good info.
Wow this is great! I was always told that thunderbolt does not work on 5,1 Macs due to the motherboard not supporting thunderbolt.

Hello, I use Apollo Twin on a mac pro 5.1 with opencore Mojave. Based on your experience, I would like to know if Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3.0 is compatible in opencore, Monterrey or Ventura with Apollo Twin?
I would say yes it should work with Martin Lo’s Opencore package and Monterey. I don’t know about Ventura and Opencore Lefacy Patcher.

Do you have a tutorial or guide, software to install Gigabyte Thunderbold 4 for Mac Pro 2019 Intel version?
Thank you very much in advance.
I would think it will work but limited by PCIe 3.0 speeds. I emailed you as well.

I have to edit the config.plist set false to true under thunderbolt near the top every time I update to Martin Lo’s latest OC package, currently running 0.8.0 and the updated config.plist for Monterey 12.5.1

no I have not tried it but others have had success, you still need to boot and reboot I believe to get the display to be recognized if its connected over thunderbolt.
200mbps bump? Not bad...
I use the inateck 3.2 pcie 16x card and also get about 650mbps with an external nvme drive. I dunno if 200mbps is worth the money or the tinker time, but its not insignificant.
I would say its not worth it unless you need thunderbolt.

What cards are available for the raid 0 NVMe

Can you please link a video to how you got a rx5700 xt to work
It was pretty easy, you have to turn off SIP install opencore I use Martin Los package for 5,1 and install Catalina or later.

The Titan Ridge does not work with all of the following:
Drobo (storage)
Promise Pegasus R6
Presonus Quantum (other Presonus should be fine)
Antelope Audio (see details above)
Slate VRS8 (will not work on a Mac Pro, works on a Hackintosh)
Lynx Aurora 16 (Original, not N) with LT-TB
shame apple wont support legacy products.
Someone tryed Protools HD Native with this ?
It works but you still have to do the boot and reboot to get it to be seen.
Use the Syba Dual M.2 M-Key NVMe Ports to PCIe 3.0 x16 Bifurcation Riser Controller (SI-PEX40129) along with a single Samsung 970 Pro to get around 2,500 MB... note that it needs to be able to go into slot 2 to achieve x8 instead of x4. (My graphics card in slot 1 is a Radeon 5700 XT and the Syba just fits snugly into slot 2.)
I'm surprised you can fit that card next tto the rx5700XT, mine totally eats into slot 2. I would love to see a photo. And what about heat?
Can I plug a Apollo audio interface with thunderbolt 3 cable
You should be able to but it takes a cold boot and a hot plug then reboot with the correct driver and compatible OS version for it to work. Pretty sure folks are using Apollo’s with their 5,1 and Titan ridge.
Looking to do the same thing did this work for you?
@@MacSoundSolutions can you elaborate on the process for the cold boot and hot plug
@@WillMonotoneOfficial cold boot, then plug in the thunderbolt device to the card and reboot. Then it will show up as a Thunderbolt device. This is what I have to do for my OWC thunderbolt drive to show up.
@@WillMonotoneOfficial I don’t have an Apollo but I do know folks have gotten them working.
OPCL duoc ko a
Yes OCLP works but you have to do some mods tot eh config.plist
@@phucnguyenduc5264 Here are the instructions inject the Titan Ridge Card: 1. Place the SSDT-TBOLT3.aml in the ACPI folder of your EFI 2. In Open Configurator under the ACPI tab, hit the Scan/Browse button in the lower left corner. The .aml file should now show up in the list. 3. Optional: Give a comment in the comment field i.e. “Thunderbolt 3” 4. Make sure the tick box is “enabled” 5. Hit save and reboot If you also use a Sonnet USB 3.0 card, including the McFiver you should also install a second .aml file as the Titan Ridge and Sonnet USB 3.0 cards don’t play well together (known issue). The Sonnet card will prevent the 5,1 from loading the Titan Ridge card when in slot 3. This aml fixes that by forcing the Sonnet card to load first. 1. Place the SSDT-SLOT3.aml in the ACPI folder of your EFI 2. In Open Configurator under the ACPI tab, hit the Scan/Browse button in the lower left corner. The .aml file should show now up in the list. 3. Optional: Give a comment in the comment field i.e. “Sonnet USB 3. 0 Slot 3” 4. Rearrange the .aml files so that the SSDT-SLOT3.aml is listed first and the SSDT-TBOLT3.aml is listed second. 5. Make sure the tick boxes are both “enabled” 6. Hit save and reboot.
For the Aquantia 10GB patch your need to download the patches here… github.com/CaseySJ/Aquantia-macOS-Patches
the site has a very easy step-by-step guide for Open Configurator. Be sure not to enable both sets and make sure the ForceAquantiaEthernet quirk is checked. I enabled set “1” and it worked perfectly.
If you use Martin Lo’s package instead of OCLP it’s built into it as I show in the video. Download it to get the files needed regardless, Martins only goes up to Monterey.
The god forsaken bracket is a lot easier to move in and out by using a screwdriver!
you are correct.
the bridge is between 1 and 3 (NOT 3 and 5)
Not according to the directions that came with my card they say 5 and 3 but the way its written is a bit odd, but either way the jumper is where it should be position wise.
@@MacSoundSolutions when you look at the numbers on the board you will see - but your bridge is on the right pins ; -)
this misinformation has unfortunately persisted for more than 2 years!
@@IndioA thanks for the clarification, my photo of the board with the cover off doesn’t show any numbers just “J1” but it makes sense the top pin would be 1 and the bottom 5.
Turn off the HDR
Been experimenting with it. Looks good on my iPad Pro, not so good on a regular monitor.
Nah!! Im planing to install Titan ridge to
So with all of the quirk is not worthed installing TB Card on this mac pro.
Damm i just wanna use my firewire interface on Big Sur using tb3 to tb2 converter and firewire to tb2 cable so i can use my saffire 40 in Big Sur
@@gassanovfuad not sure about that, FireWire 800 still works as far as I know can’t you just use a 800 to 400 adapter?, usb 3.1 always works on my Titan ridge without the quirks of thunderbolt so maybe there is a usb 3 to FireWire adapter not sure.
@@MacSoundSolutions thanks for this helpful video! I too was thinking about installing a Thunderbolt card in my 5,1 and your insights make it clear that it’s just not worth it given the quirks. In terms of whether or not a FireWire adaptor will work, I am successfully using a FW 400 to FW 800 adaptor for connecting my old FireWire audio interface to my 5,1.
Thanks again! 🙏
@@MacSoundSolutions Just like i mention before in your other video "FW 400 to 800" not work on big sur. its working fine on catalina, mojave and above
I was using a Flashed Titan Ridge on my 5,1 with an Apollo twin Interface for the past year or so but recently started having issues connecting with the interface the errors I’m getting are audio related.
Audio related, the kext that is crashing is com.uaudio.driver.UAD2System.
I have heard the latest driver is causing issues
@@MacSoundSolutions I went back to UAD version 9.13.0 it’s working but will stop after a while any ideas? Once it stops working my Mac no longer recognizes the Titan Ridge. Only solution is to turn off and unplug a few times
