Miyoko Ito (April 27, 1918-August 18, 1983) was an American artist known for her watercolor and abstract oil paintings and prints. Ito was part of an informal group of like-minded, but visually diverse Chicago painters, self-named the "Allusive Abstractionists" and formed in 1981. The group, which also included William Conger, Richard Loving and Frank Piatek, was formed to spark dialogue and make space for a wider conception of abstraction that included more subjective, metaphorical work. Though tangentially involved with the Chicago Imagists, Ito's own style diverged and synthesized cubism and surrealism. Giorgio Morandi (July 20, 1890 - June 18, 1964) was an Italian painter and printmaker who specialized in still lifes. His paintings are noted for their tonal subtlety in depicting simple subjects, mainly vases, bottles, bowls, flowers, and landscapes. Something about these pictures reminds me of Moebius landscapes. Great show! Thank you Kate & JK
I like these works. It's always a shame that so many artists are not recognized until long after they have passed, but at least they stuck with it. I wonder how many potentially great artists today are giving up because they are not receiving immediate feedback.
So glad you covered this artist, James. A close friend was sharing her work with me a few weeks ago. Really solid, masterful works. Inviting spaces, hints at subjects - both done with great poise. I was reminded of Matthias Weischer's later work - tho o/c she predates him by a generation. The same gradients, exuberantly thick paint, and esp. the edges b/t color areas. But also the glowing, inviting interior quality of it. A deep bow for this artist and for your video, sensei. ありがとうございます、ジェームズとケート!
Fantastic video James. Miyoko's work is so Beautiful, what a great show and sad that she seemed ignored during her life. I Love her colour sense and I Love her little hints of depth in her work, the odd shadow here and there! Thank you James and thank you Kate.
I was able to swing by this gallery earlier this month while visiting NYC, during my mad rush to see how many Chelsea galleries I could see in one afternoon. ...Her bio brought me to tears. The delicate sense of color and contrast in person is really moving. Thanks!
wonderful works. love that you reveal artists i would never hear of except through your videos. it's interesting how this artist didnt hit the heights. the luck of the game or who you know, i guess. tks J&K
Wow...I think the best word to describe her work is "graceful." Beautiful, beautiful stuff. And it's interesting...the later works seem to have very little underpainting and re-working...like she could already see where she needed to go before she started. That's experience, that's vision. As always, thanks for this and thank you Kate.
The longer I watched this, the better they seemed and the more I liked them! The colours remind me of fifties and sixties comics where the paper is discoloured and the colour breaking down. Thank you Kate.
This is the best exhibition I have seen from you James in a while. The fifties paintings from the fifties in the back room were particulalry attractive. Thanks to you and Kate.
5:45 those tacks are mighty odd, and look as though they are there to distract from the canvas being premade, hence the aluminium staples also being present....
her color palette is so refreshing and seemingly futuristic even though it was in the 70s. maybe I am nostalgic for the 70s future we never experienced.
Are both July & August terrible times to visit NYC galleries? Coming out to see family & can't recall if it is just August that has summer shows only/galleries closed. Any help appreciated!
Hey @jlarrabeeify, I'd just say that July and August might be a bit slow, but since the "reset," the galleries are pretty desperate, so they seem to stay opening more often during the summer when they used to close. I'd make some inquiries just to make sure...JK
Thanks again, again JK & K
Thanks great unknown artist

Another wonderful painter that I never heard of before. Thank you so much for this!
Studying art in Chicago in the 70’s, I was always attracted to her subtle color gradations and very dry brushwork. Thanks for sharing this video.

Hello…. Beautiful execution Theater Abstraction.
Very illustrative. Lacks spontaneity . Every inch is controlled.
