    I have come across a book that provided an amazing shortcut for these questions. It suggested that we imagine creating a square with the given perimeter (2500 yd). Therefore, the side length of the square would be 625. Subsequently, we just need to calculate the area of this square, which is straightforwardly obtained by squaring 625, yielding the identical solution of 390625.

    You can also use your a(w) equation to find when the derivative is equal to 0, because that will be the vertex, and then use that as your width value.

    thats a most complicated way of doing it.
    lets say i have a fence 900m long. I divide the length of the fence by 4 which gives me 225m per side. the area inside if joined up into a paddock will be 225 x 225m which gives me a area of 50,625m2 or 5.06ha. Im a metric boy!!!

    I thought the vertex form was f(x)= a(x-h)2 + k where the vertex is h,k. Where does the -b/2a part come from??

    • @MathandStatsHelp
      @MathandStatsHelp  4 роки тому +2

      That is the vertex form of a quadratic function. If you are in standard form, but just want the coordinates of the vertex, you can find x by doing -b/(2a). If you convert from standard form to vertex form, you have to complete the square and that's where it comes from. To find the y coordinate, you just plug in your x value into the equation.

    If the length and width are the same it's a square not a rectangle. 626L x 624w would be the max rectangle and area

    • @MathandStatsHelp
      @MathandStatsHelp  4 роки тому +1

      A square is a rectangle with sides of equal length. Definition of a rectangle is a quadrilateral with 4 right angles. A square is just a special case of a rectangle.

    • @kevinrogers2686
      @kevinrogers2686 4 роки тому +2

      Im not disputing the literal definition but most people when they hear rectangle think other than 4 equal sides. The question and drawing certainly leads to imply this.

    • @MathandStatsHelp
      @MathandStatsHelp  4 роки тому +3

      Most times when drawing a figure from the given information when there is an unknown, the picture is not drawn to scale. To maximize the area of a rectangle, it will always be a square. It's important sometimes to see this from using the formula and solving a system with two unknowns to realize that this is the case. It is done to demonstrate that it works this way, rather than just explicitly stating it.

  • @mizaelgarcia9134
    @mizaelgarcia9134 3 роки тому

    What if its the same question but it specifies it needs to be a rectangle, not a square?

    • @MathandStatsHelp
      @MathandStatsHelp  3 роки тому

      All squares are rectangles by definition. A rectangle is a quadrilateral with 4 right angles. A square meets that definition. It just happens to be a rectangle with 4 equal sides.

      We typically don't look at that, because technically, you could put something really small where no one could even get into it. We tend to look at the maximum, because we want the most out of it.
