Having walked the tragic and lonely path of a life of loyalty, hidden true love, silent protecting and sacrifice for others. And having erased every trace of it. Making sure nobody ever knew the true depths of your love, the true lenghts of your sacrifices and the true nature of your heart. In the name of your devoted selfless love you chose to die alone and you made preparations to be forgotten and misunderstood even if you deserve only the opposite. But you have no interest in ego, praise or admiration, no interest in harming the one you love with your memory and your death, you have no interest in looking like the good guy, you have no interest in making them feel like the owe you. No interest in demanding love. No interest in making them remember you for years and years. No interest in winning the heart of your loved one. No interest in competing for love. You have no interest in power, being a king or a legend. No interest in putting conditions to love. No interest in showing off, of proving your worth, no pretensions about being "the best one" or "deserving better". Never an ounce of selfishness in your love. In your plan there was only devotion to the man who saved you and the woman that cried for you. Your only interest was loyalty and pure love. You made the ultimate sacrifice, giving not one, but every single one of your lives for others. How grateful we should be that someone with that amount of power decides to use all his lives no for vanity and power but for service, loyalty and love. I feel deeply honored to have met and witness you. Even if you let no traces in that world, in this world we know the real you, and even if the memory of you hurts, we won't forget you. Ever. I don't care if someone doesn't understand you. For me, the only stains of your love were those of your own blood and sacrifice. Your heart remains the purest to me. Yes, I also deeply wish Xiaoyao will know everything you did for her. But that would go against everything you planned and wished for her. And for all you've done we owe you at least some respect for your decisions and even Nian understood that. So what's left to do is to share the burden you held in life, and if nobody in that world would remember you, in this world we will, we'll pay our respect, we'll honor your memory, and we'll try to live our lives better, even with an ounce of the selflessness you did. The other person I thought commendable is actually the King of Haoling. The peace and prosperity of the land came about because he worked behind the scenes for so many years to nurture the leaders. His love for Xiao Yao is also commendable because in spite of knowing she is the daughter of Chi Chen, he still loved and protected her. He is wise and saw Cang Xuan's attack coming earlier than most other people - the other person who would have sensed it is Cang Xuan's grandpa... possibly Xiang Liu too because after all... he has got 9 brains 😅😅😅... and Jing because to his credit he is smart and very perceptive particularly if it has anything to do with Xiao Yao. He even pathed the way to a surrender of power and in so saving Cang Xuan from being a corrupt and abusive ruler. He was not perfect in how he treated Ah Heng, but he learnt to be benevolent, gentle, kind and wise. Cang Xuan's grandpa also grown to be wiser and more benevolent with age, but he is nonetheless more power hungry and ruthless compared with King of Haoling. In the end, seeing the former kings of Haoling and Xiyan sitting together in harmony because of their connection through Cang Xuan and Xiao Yao is somewhat sweet to see.

I am sad. This was a very fulfilling drama. Great actors. Amazing story. Beautiful love. Moving songs. Normally, I dislike sad endings. The whole story was meaningful, so the sad ending was worthwhile. Xiangliu is always with Xiaoyao, even after his death. Congratulations, thanks, and love to all who made it happen. And love to all who watched along with me.

A Nian is Xiang Liu’s shadow character. When A Nian tells Xiao Yao, “Take this doll to travel the world. Make up for what I’m missing,” it’s as if Xiang Liu is saying this to Xiao Yao. Tong Hua was inspired by _A Dream of Red Mansions_ (《紅樓夢》), one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, to use shadow writing (影写). A shadow character shares many traits with the main character they shadow and often experiences similar situations. Shadow characters can subtly hint at a main character's intentions and motivations or foreshadow events the main character will encounter. Though A Nian and Xiang Liu seem like polar opposites, Tong Hua gives them many parallels in order to establish their shadow relationship. Here are a few examples: (1) Both possess ice-based spiritual powers. (2) Both are insecure about their backgrounds-Xiang Liu feels insecure about being a reviled nine-headed demon, while A Nian is insecure about her mother’s lowly status. (3) Both met Xiao Liu under similar circumstances. Xiao Liu poisoned Mao Qiu to defend the fei fei and attempted, but failed, to poison Xiang Liu. He was forced to give Xiang Liu the antidote for Mao Qiu. Similarly, Xiao Liu poisoned Hai Tang to defend Lao Mu and attempted, but failed, to poison A Nian, leading him to give A Nian the antidote for Hai Tang. (4) Both threatened to chop off Xiao Liu’s hands-Xiang Liu when Xiao Liu threw poison at him during their first meeting, and A Nian when Xiao Liu kidnapped her to help Xiang Liu obtain medicine for his men. (5) Xiao Yao gave both three choices. When discussing Chuan Zi’s marriage with Xiang Liu, Xiao Liu offered three options: “You can give me forty lashes, you can kick me out of here, or you can listen to something important I have to say. Important!” Similarly, after their fight, Xiao Yao gave A Nian three choices for the direction of their relationship: 1. Continue being hostile, 2. Stay out of each other’s way and coexist peacefully, or 3. Get along and become real sisters. (6) Xiao Yao warned both to stay out of the Central Plains. (7) Both made Xiao Yao swear an oath. Xiang Liu made Xiao Liu swear an oath to do one thing for him in the future before agreeing to accept the voodoo bug. A Nian made Xiao Liu swear not to let her father marry her off to him. These examples are just a small sampling of the many parallels between A Nian and Xiang Liu. Because A Nian is Xiang Liu's shadow, we can use what A Nian says and does to better understand Xiang Liu.
Xiang Liu died the way he chose as a General on the battlefield. But his last thoughts were of Xiaoyao and her tear merged with his as he passed from this world. I will forever love the character of Xiang Liu who showed us true love without ever wanting anything in return. Who gave up 3 of his lives to save the woman he loved. He didn't need to say he loved her because his actions showed us he did. Tan Jian Ci, you are the best actor I've ever seen next to Xiao Zhan. You express emotions through your eyes and we needed no words to know how Xiang Liu felt or thought. You are amazing and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving us this awesome portrayal of our Ice Snow Nine-Headed Demon who was more human than the humans. He had nine lives and one heart and all of them belonged to Xiaoyao. ❤
the last words for her were so full of love, just not meant to be together. It is a great series to watch. Do not miss it, from the first to the second season. A must watch!!!!

Watching the last episode .... it felt anti climax ...It was so intense until the minute 13..but the ending was like all of other simple story dramas. Oyherwise the story were so captivating until episode 23 to the minute 13.... Thank you to all for producing this drama. I am very thankful through this drama I found the bright actor such as Tan Jianci. All casting were fine, but Tan Jianci captivating me with his acting art.
This was an extremely good drama, the storyline and casting was perfect. Although, I watched the last 3 episodes back to back and feel like I need therapy 😅I think I'll be revisiting this drama again soon. Thank you Tencent as always for the fantastic Eng subtitles.
What an outstandingly beautiful drama. And they married at last ! I was emotionally exhausted waiting for that wedding. Cang Xuan grew up and accepted the boundaries he had chosen. Xiang Liu died in battle - a great warrior but that a piece of him always travels with Xiaoyao. All the characters were wonderful.
I'm sad poor Xiang Liu 😭😭😭😭 at the end he only wanted for Xiao Yao to be happy so he saved Jing so she could live a happy life 🥺❤ if that isn't love I don't know what it is 💔
41:06 - "Xiao Yao could be the lady selling flowers. She could be the woman buying sweet soy milk for her child. She could be the shop owner dozing off." This line illustrates what everyday life would be like for Xiao Yao with each of the male leads. The flower seller corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Cang Xuan, who gave her the red Ruomu flower. The woman buying sweet soy milk for a child corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Xiang Liu, who gave her the big-bellied laughing doll, a child's toy. The dozing male shop owner corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Jing, a merchant who slept for 37 years. The fact that the shop owner is male relates back to Xiao Yao's original and ideal relationship dynamic with Jing, as Wen Xiaoliu and Ye Shiqi. The fact that the shop owner is dozing could also imply that life with Jing is not very exciting for Xiao Yao since they have no interests in common.
The novel contains a similar excerpt: 小夭有可能是那当垆卖酒的小娘子，有可能是在药堂内打瞌睡的医师，有可能是那摇着扇子追孩子的妇人…… Xiao Yao could be the young lady selling wine, the doctor dozing off in the pharmacy, or the woman chasing the child with a fan... -- Vol 3 Ch 18 (Chapter 51) The young lady selling wine corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Cang Xuan, who was a wine merchant in Qingshui Town. The dozing doctor corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Jing, as she was the doctor who saved Ye Shiqi's life and revised medical texts while being engaged to Jing. The woman chasing the child corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Xiang Liu, who gave her the big-bellied laughing doll, a child's toy.
Here is this line from the leaked script for the drama: 阿念：（顺着跄玹的目光看向市井）姐姐也许是那卖花的娘子，也许是那布店打瞌睡的老板 (男)，也许是那给孩子买甜浆的妇人...... A Nian: (Following Cang Xuan's gaze towards the bustling market) Sister might be the lady selling flowers, or the shop owner (male) dozing off in the fabric store, or the woman buying sweet soy milk for her child... Notice that the order of the people mentioned is different: the script (and the novel) places the woman buying sweet soy milk last, while the drama reverses the order of the shop owner and the woman buying sweet soy milk. I'm not a fan of this reversal because I believe Tong Hua may have used the original order to subtly hint that Xiao Yao will end up with Xiang Liu. First, Xiao Yao accompanied Cang Xuan and helped him ascend the throne (as the lady selling flowers), then she married and accompanied Jing (as the dozing shop owner), and finally, she will reunite with and accompany Xiang Liu (as the woman with child). With the change in order to place the shop owner (Jing) last, the order doesn't seem to have any particular significance anymore.
Why did Tong Hua change the dozing doctor in the novel to the dozing merchant in the drama? This change was made because Ah Nian accidentally bumps into Wen Xiaoliu, who is a doctor, the first time she visits Qingshui Town. Coincidentally, she bumps into another doctor when she returns to Qingshui Town in the last episode. It was more appropriate for Ah Nian to mention people on the streets of Qingshui Town she had not interacted with to underscore the fact that Xiao Yao could have been any one of these people. In fact, if you look in Episode 1, all the same types of merchants were present the first time Ah Nian and Cang Xuan visited Qingshui Town: a merchant selling sweet soy milk, a merchant selling flowers, and a merchant selling cloth. The lady selling wine in the novel was changed to the lady selling flowers in the drama because it didn't make sense to have Xuan open a wine shop if there was already a wine merchant on the streets of Qingshui Town.
At 41:58, notice the mother and child we previously saw buying sweet soy milk walking out of the frame on the bottom left. Follow the direction they're walking. Then, at 42:14, in the bottom left of the frame, we see what appears to be a man in a white outfit sitting on a balcony. If the mother and child continue on their path, they might pass by this man. Given that the mother and child symbolize Xiao Yao and her everyday life with Xiang Liu, this shot could be hinting that a YaoLiu reunion is just around the corner.
Loved this drama, loved the actors, script, scenery. Thank you all for making this drama hard to forget. Tan Jianci did brilliantly in his role. ❤ Yang Zi also. Cried & laughed with them. The best character in this drama is Xinag Liu. He loved XaoYao very much. He deserved a happy ending. Xiang Liu was much better than Tushan Jing and deserved XaoYao. He loved her unconditionally, he did everything for the woman he loved. Undoubtedly the best character in this drama is Xinag Liu👏👏
There’s 3 versions of this story , one where Xiaoyao and Xiang liu are happily in love and safe exploring the earthly realms, the other is Cang Xuan marriage to Xiaoyao and having a family.
Xiang Liu is not gone forever; he will be reborn with a new identity, and YaoLiu will meet again in Qingshui Town. The ending, where Cang Xuan and A Nian return to Qingshui Town and encounter situations uncannily similar to those at the beginning of the drama, hints at the start of a new cycle in Qingshui Town. When Tong Hua released 长相思 (Lost You Forever) in 2013, she wrote in a letter introducing the novel to fans: 生命是一场又一场的相遇和别离，是一次又一次的遗忘和开始。 Life is a series of encounters and partings, a cycle of forgetting and beginning anew. Expand the replies to see evidence supporting the theory of a YaoLiu reunion in Qingshui Town.
There is a theory that the poem “First Encounter”(初相遇) by Xi Murong (席慕容) inspired the name of Qingshui Town (清水镇) and the title of the first volume of Lost You Forever, Like the First Meeting. The appreciation for the poem begins with: 每个人都有着一种初遇情结，真的就象一杯清水一样清纯透明。 Everyone has a first encounter complex, which really is like a glass of clear water, pure and transparent. Qingshui (清水), which means "clear water, " is a river in Classic of Mountains and Seas (山海经), a book that inspired a lot of the names in Lost You Forever. There are other river names in Classic of Mountains and Seas, so there must be a reason why Tong Hua selected Qingshui to be the name of the town. Perhaps the name Qingshui Town (清水镇), where YaoLiu first met, was inspired by the appreciation for Xi Murong's poem which likened a first encounter to a glass of clear water (清水 - qingshui). The appreciation for the poem goes on to say: 人生若只如初见，岂不是人生最好的写照吗？ If life were only like the first meeting, wouldn't that be the best portrayal of life? This line might have inspired the title of the first volume of Lost You Forever, Like the First Meeting (如初见). The poem itself is about two people reuniting in a dream and being able to start anew, as if meeting for the first time. This might hint that YaoLiu will meet again in Qingshui Town, and the reunion will feel like the first time they met. Perhaps YaoLiu can finally have a new beginning after all the trials and heartache they encountered in Lost You Forever.
Xiao Yao’s clinic in Qingshui Town is named Huichun Tang (回春堂), which is translated in the drama as Rejuvenation Hall. However the words “回春 - huichun” can also mean "to bring back to life" or "return of spring." Season 2, Episode 22 showed Xiao Yao and Xiang Liu parting ways in the spring, when peach blossoms were in full bloom on the trees. The poem “First Encounter,” which may have inspired the name for Qingshui Town, appears as the first poem in volume two of Xi Murong’s poetry anthology Youth Without Regret (无怨的青春). The last poem in volume two is “Question” (疑问). Here is an excerpt from the poem: 年轻时 如羞涩的蓓蕾 In youth, like a shy bud 无法启口 Unable to speak 等花满枝丫 When flowers filled the branches 却又别离 We parted ways 而今夜相见 And now, meeting tonight 却又碍着你我的白发 We are hindered by our white hair The two people in the poem parted ways in their youth when the flowers were in bloom on the trees in the spring and met again many years later. This could be another hint at YaoLiu’s eventual reunion in Qingshui Town after Xiang Liu's revival (回春). Perhaps, when the flowers are again in full bloom in the spring, it will mark a "return of spring" (回春) for YaoLiu.
The last episode of the drama is not the true ending for the characters. Tong Hua alluded to the ending of the novel not being the final ending for the characters in several Q&As upon the release of the novel. 26度-晴: 虽然这里谈的是长相思，可是我还是忍不住要问，孟钰是真的死了吗？云中歌看了好多遍，真的好希望陵哥哥是假死或者孟钰只是掉进了河里，这样的话云歌就不是一个人了。 Reader: Although we are discussing “Lost You Forever” here, I can't help but ask: Did Meng Yu really die? I've read “Song in the Clouds” many times and truly hope that Brother Ling is only pretending to be dead or that Meng Yu just fell into the river. That way, Yun Ge wouldn't be alone. 桐华tonghua: 我不知道…我也希望他活着，能多年后，江湖再见。 Tong Hua: I don't know... I also hope that he is alive, and that they can meet again in the world years later. Although Tong Hua was talking about her hopes for a reunion for the characters in "Song in the Clouds," I would bet she feels the same way about a YaoLiu reunion--especially since she gave this response in a Q&A about "Lost You Forever." 一朵西柚精: 前两部有很多伏笔, 在第三部里也没有解释, 这, 是什么节奏?? Reader: The first two parts had many foreshadowings, which were not explained in the third part. What kind of rhythm is this?? 桐华tonghua: 这是......要长期奋斗的节奏! Tong Hua: This is... the rhythm of long-term struggle! "Long-term struggle" means the story continues after the end of the novel. 桐华tonghua: 用这个问题作为开场吧, 其实, 每个故事的结束都并不是那些人物的真正的结局, 在这个问题上, 我是个很不切实际的 人, 我总觉得故事只是他们生命的一个段落, 即使我的故事结束了, 他们的生活依旧在另外一个空间继续, 所以, 每个故事都不可能有真正的结局的。 Tong Hua: Let's start with this question. In fact, the conclusion of every story is not the real ending for those characters. On this matter, I am quite unrealistic. I always feel that the story is just a chapter in their lives. Even though my story has ended, their lives continue in another space, so, it’s not possible for every story to have a true ending. This is Tong Hua's most direct clue that the ending in the novel is not the true ending.
Xiang Liu is hinted to be the leader of the Guifang clan, who has the ability to bring people back to life. In Season 1, Episode 13, when Xiang Liu commissioned Xiao Yao's bow and arrows, he flashed the token of the leader of the Guifang clan. The emblem of the Guifang clan is a two-headed snake with an octopus on top. People naturally associate snakes with the nine-headed snake demon, Xiang Liu. Additionally, octopuses have nine brains, just like our beloved nine-headed demon, and three hearts, which represent the three lives Xiang Liu sacrificed to save Xiao Yao. Xiang Liu's association with the Guifang clan could set the context for his resurrection.
The drama production team released videos of each of the four male leads writing letters to Xiao Yao that hint at each of their eventual fates. You can find them by looking for the respective Chinese terms: Feng Long's Letter - 特辑回顾：丰隆写给小夭 Cang Xuan's Letter - 特辑回顾：玱玹写给小夭 Jing's Letter - 特辑回顾：璟写给小夭 Xiang Liu's letter - 特辑回顾：相柳写给小夭 Let's analyze the four letters to Xiao Yao that the drama production team released together. Cang Xuan and Xiang Liu’s clothing and settings are a mix of ancient and modern styles, hinting that they survived into modern times. In contrast, Feng Long and Jing wrote their letters while wearing ancient-style clothing, which does not bode well for their longevity. We all know that Feng Long died at Xiang Liu’s hand. Jing most likely significantly shortened his lifespan by using the Lamp of Time to find out the truth about the night he spent with Fangfeng Yiying. Feng Long’s letter contains a scene where Xiao Yao is smiling at Jing while playing the qin and wearing her Red Thread of Fate (姻緣紅線) robe, the YaoLiu couple’s outfit. Tushan Jing’s letter contains a scene where he says, “but you saw me,” flashing back to when Xiao Yao saw Fangfeng Bei for the first time. Cang Xuan’s letter includes a scene with Xiang Liu aiming his arrow at him and Xiao Yao protecting him. So, Feng Long, Cang Xuan, and Jing’s letters all contain scenes involving Xiang Liu. Meanwhile, Xiang Liu’s letter is the only one that doesn’t involve the other men in the drama. Even when he says he will give Xiao Yao someone to rely on, the scenes are only of him and Xiao Yao, with no Tushan Jing. The implication is that Xiang Liu is Xiao Yao’s true love, and he will eventually be the person Xiao Yao can rely on. Also, note the use of thunder and candles in the letters. Cang Xuan’s letter does not feature candles, but we hear thunder when he learns that his father died in battle. Feng Long blows out a cand1e in the middle of his letter, accompanied by ominous thunder, signifying his death in the drama. There is an unlit cand1e to Jing’s left on his desk, and thunder is heard right after Xiao Yao sees Fangfeng Bei for the first time. The unlit cand1e and thunder hint at Jing’s limited lifespan. Jing marries Xiao Yao at the end of the drama but will not be able to accompany her for the entirety of her life. Xiang Liu’s letter also features thunder because he dies in battle, but the cand1e on his desk remains burning at the end, hinting at a rebirth or revival of some sort. Near the end of Xiang Liu’s letter, Xiao Yao says, “It’s okay, take me out to play next time,” then calls out his name. At the end of Jing's letter, she casually calls "Shiqi," but notice she doesn't say "Jing," and her tone is not filled with heartfelt yearning as when she calls Xiang Liu's name. This suggests that Xiang Liu is the one Xiao Yao loves and yearns for most in her heart and that there will be a next time for YaoLiu. Taken as a whole, the implication of these letters is clear: Xiang Liu will be reborn and will eventually be able to be with Xiao Yao.
From the start to the end(ss1-2😭) I'm here because of Xiang liu. The character that make me fall in❤. Tanjianci make this character very special in my heart.
As much as I wish a different ending and wanted 相柳to have a happy ending with Xiao, the ending was handled beautifully and was consistently with the whole story (超怕爛尾), I’m praying for a 番外about 相柳and Xiao. 相柳and Xiao will be forever in my heart , thanks to everyone that contributed to filming this amazing tv productions and for bringing all the characters from the book to life (and the music are amazing as well ❤️), thank you 長相思❤️🥲💜🌸🩵🌙.
Im so sad for Xiang Liu 😢😢he has unselfish love for Xiayao but also a heart of a true general❤️❤️from season 1 until this very end he never do anything to push his feeling for Xiayao even though he can do it if he want😊😊 this is the true meaning of "if you love a person set him/her free"

What a lovely serial it was!!!!! Not only the protagonist but other characters are also brilliant. I love Nian, Grandfather and father of Xiaoyao. How a brother sacrifices his life for the sake of his sister's eternal happiness. I randomly watched treasure of this serial featured Xiang lu and i started to watch this series.
Hmmm... interesting idea that Xiao Yao's mother won't like Tushan Jing as much as Xiang Liu... maybe she realised that a free spirit like Xiao Yao would be happier with Xiang Liu and because of how much he is like Chi Chen.

Xiao Yao responded, "He is the only one who will never abandon me no matter what happens." To this, A Heng could only laugh bitterly, knowing that Xiao Yao's abandonment issues stemmed from her own choice to go to war and leave her daughter behind. A Heng immediately knew that Xiao Yao didn't have romantic love for Jing. As a former witch doctor at Bai Li, she must have been familiar with the Poisonous Lovers' Bugs and could sense that Xiao Yao had a Poisonous Lovers' Bug in her body while Jing did not, just like the witch king could in the novel. Also, like you said, Xiao Yao's mother had observed Jing's subservient behavior and knew her daughter well enough to know that he couldn't possibly be the man she loved. Surprisingly the drama makes it even more clear that A Heng and Chi Chen both support Xiang Liu. In Season 2, Episode 15, Xiang Liu visits Chi Chen and A Heng’s former residence to find a way to break the lovers’ bug connection. During his visit, he sees the painting of Chi Chen and A Heng transform into a depiction of him and Xiao Yao holding hands. This transformation is not the result of Xiang Liu’s imagination or spiritual power. Instead, it is triggered by the peach branch in the painting, a manifestation of Chi Chen and A Heng’s wish to see Xiao Yao marry and have children. Note that the branch first appeared in the painting after a peach petal flew into the painting when A Heng's consciousness dispersed. Peach petals represent Chi Chen's spiritual power. The spiritual power sealed in the painting may have activated because it sensed the lovers’ bug inside Xiang Liu, recognizing him as Xiao Yao's true love. Just as the peach petals restoring the Rejuvenating Flower signifies Xiao Yao’s parents' support for her, the transformation of the painting signifies their blessing of YaoLiu's union and their recognition of Xiang Liu as their son-in-law. In turn, Xiang Liu lights incense and bows to honor A Heng and Chi Chen, because he is their true son in law. We had previously seen Jing standing to the side while Xiao Yao and Cang Xuan honored Xiao Yao's parents. Obviously, the peach branch didn't activate at that time.

I cried so hard Xiangliu's heroic death. Even his final moments he still holds to that last drop of tears. N still think of Xiaoyao. Indeed Tan jianci's acting skills is top notch. His chemistry with Yangzi is always intense. Very good drama albeitly ending is alittle disappointed n in disarray though. ❤👍👍

This author likes to write sad ending novels. I have read several of them. She created the characters that we grew to love, and then killed them. I can’t argue much about this particular ending because the development makes sense.

The other person I thought commendable is actually the King of Haoling. The peace and prosperity of the land came about because he worked behind the scenes for so many years to nurture the leaders. His love for Xiao Yao is also commendable because in spite of knowing she is the daughter of Chi Chen, he still loved and protected her. He is wise and saw Cang Xuan's attack coming earlier than most other people - the other person who would have sensed it is Cang Xuan's grandpa... possibly Xiang Liu too because after all... he has got 9 brains 😅😅😅... and Jing because to his credit he is smart and very perceptive particularly if it has anything to do with Xiao Yao. He even pathed the way to a surrender of power and in so saving Cang Xuan from being a corrupt and abusive ruler. He was not perfect in how he treated Ah Heng, but he learnt to be benevolent, gentle, kind and wise. Cang Xuan's grandpa also grown to be wiser and more benevolent with age, but he is nonetheless more power hungry and ruthless compared with King of Haoling. In the end, seeing the former kings of Haoling and Xiyan sitting together in harmony because of their connection through Cang Xuan and Xiao Yao is somewhat sweet to see.

A Nian is Xiang Liu’s shadow character. When A Nian tells Xiao Yao, “Take this doll to travel the world. Make up for what I’m missing,” it’s as if Xiang Liu is saying this to Xiao Yao.
Tong Hua was inspired by _A Dream of Red Mansions_ (《紅樓夢》), one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature, to use shadow writing (影写). A shadow character shares many traits with the main character they shadow and often experiences similar situations. Shadow characters can subtly hint at a main character's intentions and motivations or foreshadow events the main character will encounter.
Though A Nian and Xiang Liu seem like polar opposites, Tong Hua gives them many parallels in order to establish their shadow relationship. Here are a few examples:
(1) Both possess ice-based spiritual powers.
(2) Both are insecure about their backgrounds-Xiang Liu feels insecure about being a reviled nine-headed demon, while A Nian is insecure about her mother’s lowly status.
(3) Both met Xiao Liu under similar circumstances. Xiao Liu poisoned Mao Qiu to defend the fei fei and attempted, but failed, to poison Xiang Liu. He was forced to give Xiang Liu the antidote for Mao Qiu. Similarly, Xiao Liu poisoned Hai Tang to defend Lao Mu and attempted, but failed, to poison A Nian, leading him to give A Nian the antidote for Hai Tang.
(4) Both threatened to chop off Xiao Liu’s hands-Xiang Liu when Xiao Liu threw poison at him during their first meeting, and A Nian when Xiao Liu kidnapped her to help Xiang Liu obtain medicine for his men.
(5) Xiao Yao gave both three choices. When discussing Chuan Zi’s marriage with Xiang Liu, Xiao Liu offered three options: “You can give me forty lashes, you can kick me out of here, or you can listen to something important I have to say. Important!” Similarly, after their fight, Xiao Yao gave A Nian three choices for the direction of their relationship: 1. Continue being hostile, 2. Stay out of each other’s way and coexist peacefully, or 3. Get along and become real sisters.
(6) Xiao Yao warned both to stay out of the Central Plains.
(7) Both made Xiao Yao swear an oath. Xiang Liu made Xiao Liu swear an oath to do one thing for him in the future before agreeing to accept the voodoo bug. A Nian made Xiao Liu swear not to let her father marry her off to him.
These examples are just a small sampling of the many parallels between A Nian and Xiang Liu. Because A Nian is Xiang Liu's shadow, we can use what A Nian says and does to better understand Xiang Liu.

I will forever love the character of Xiang Liu who showed us true love without ever wanting anything in return. Who gave up 3 of his lives to save the woman he loved. He didn't need to say he loved her because his actions showed us he did. Tan Jian Ci, you are the best actor I've ever seen next to Xiao Zhan. You express emotions through your eyes and we needed no words to know how Xiang Liu felt or thought. You are amazing and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving us this awesome portrayal of our Ice Snow Nine-Headed Demon who was more human than the humans. He had nine lives and one heart and all of them belonged to Xiaoyao. ❤

Watching the last episode .... it felt anti climax ...It was so intense until the minute 13..but the ending was like all of other simple story dramas. Oyherwise the story were so captivating until episode 23 to the minute 13.... Thank you to all for producing this drama. I am very thankful through this drama I found the bright actor such as Tan Jianci. All casting were fine, but Tan Jianci captivating me with his acting art.
This was an extremely good drama, the storyline and casting was perfect. Although, I watched the last 3 episodes back to back and feel like I need therapy 😅I think I'll be revisiting this drama again soon. Thank you Tencent as always for the fantastic Eng subtitles.
What an outstandingly beautiful drama. And they married at last ! I was emotionally exhausted waiting for that wedding. Cang Xuan grew up and accepted the boundaries he had chosen. Xiang Liu died in battle - a great warrior but that a piece of him always travels with Xiaoyao. All the characters were wonderful.
Oh, Liang Liu, you are so perfect on this character. I hope you and Xiayao will have your own story to tell in the future.

This line illustrates what everyday life would be like for Xiao Yao with each of the male leads. The flower seller corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Cang Xuan, who gave her the red Ruomu flower. The woman buying sweet soy milk for a child corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Xiang Liu, who gave her the big-bellied laughing doll, a child's toy. The dozing male shop owner corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Jing, a merchant who slept for 37 years. The fact that the shop owner is male relates back to Xiao Yao's original and ideal relationship dynamic with Jing, as Wen Xiaoliu and Ye Shiqi. The fact that the shop owner is dozing could also imply that life with Jing is not very exciting for Xiao Yao since they have no interests in common.
The novel contains a similar excerpt:

The young lady selling wine corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Cang Xuan, who was a wine merchant in Qingshui Town. The dozing doctor corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Jing, as she was the doctor who saved Ye Shiqi's life and revised medical texts while being engaged to Jing. The woman chasing the child corresponds to Xiao Yao being with Xiang Liu, who gave her the big-bellied laughing doll, a child's toy.
Here is this line from the leaked script for the drama:
阿念：（顺着跄玹的目光看向市井）姐姐也许是那卖花的娘子，也许是那布店打瞌睡的老板 (男)，也许是那给孩子买甜浆的妇人......
A Nian: (Following Cang Xuan's gaze towards the bustling market) Sister might be the lady selling flowers, or the shop owner (male) dozing off in the fabric store, or the woman buying sweet soy milk for her child...
Notice that the order of the people mentioned is different: the script (and the novel) places the woman buying sweet soy milk last, while the drama reverses the order of the shop owner and the woman buying sweet soy milk. I'm not a fan of this reversal because I believe Tong Hua may have used the original order to subtly hint that Xiao Yao will end up with Xiang Liu. First, Xiao Yao accompanied Cang Xuan and helped him ascend the throne (as the lady selling flowers), then she married and accompanied Jing (as the dozing shop owner), and finally, she will reunite with and accompany Xiang Liu (as the woman with child). With the change in order to place the shop owner (Jing) last, the order doesn't seem to have any particular significance anymore.
Why did Tong Hua change the dozing doctor in the novel to the dozing merchant in the drama? This change was made because Ah Nian accidentally bumps into Wen Xiaoliu, who is a doctor, the first time she visits Qingshui Town. Coincidentally, she bumps into another doctor when she returns to Qingshui Town in the last episode. It was more appropriate for Ah Nian to mention people on the streets of Qingshui Town she had not interacted with to underscore the fact that Xiao Yao could have been any one of these people. In fact, if you look in Episode 1, all the same types of merchants were present the first time Ah Nian and Cang Xuan visited Qingshui Town: a merchant selling sweet soy milk, a merchant selling flowers, and a merchant selling cloth. The lady selling wine in the novel was changed to the lady selling flowers in the drama because it didn't make sense to have Xuan open a wine shop if there was already a wine merchant on the streets of Qingshui Town.
At 41:58, notice the mother and child we previously saw buying sweet soy milk walking out of the frame on the bottom left. Follow the direction they're walking. Then, at 42:14, in the bottom left of the frame, we see what appears to be a man in a white outfit sitting on a balcony. If the mother and child continue on their path, they might pass by this man. Given that the mother and child symbolize Xiao Yao and her everyday life with Xiang Liu, this shot could be hinting that a YaoLiu reunion is just around the corner.

Xiang Liu is not gone forever; he will be reborn with a new identity, and YaoLiu will meet again in Qingshui Town. The ending, where Cang Xuan and A Nian return to Qingshui Town and encounter situations uncannily similar to those at the beginning of the drama, hints at the start of a new cycle in Qingshui Town. When Tong Hua released 长相思 (Lost You Forever) in 2013, she wrote in a letter introducing the novel to fans:

There is a theory that the poem “First Encounter”(初相遇) by Xi Murong (席慕容) inspired the name of Qingshui Town (清水镇) and the title of the first volume of Lost You Forever, Like the First Meeting. The appreciation for the poem begins with:
每个人都有着一种初遇情结，真的就象一杯清水一样清纯透明。
Everyone has a first encounter complex, which really is like a glass of clear water, pure and transparent.
Qingshui (清水), which means "clear water, " is a river in Classic of Mountains and Seas (山海经), a book that inspired a lot of the names in Lost You Forever. There are other river names in Classic of Mountains and Seas, so there must be a reason why Tong Hua selected Qingshui to be the name of the town. Perhaps the name Qingshui Town (清水镇), where YaoLiu first met, was inspired by the appreciation for Xi Murong's poem which likened a first encounter to a glass of clear water (清水 - qingshui).
The appreciation for the poem goes on to say:
人生若只如初见，岂不是人生最好的写照吗？
If life were only like the first meeting, wouldn't that be the best portrayal of life?
This line might have inspired the title of the first volume of Lost You Forever, Like the First Meeting (如初见).
The poem itself is about two people reuniting in a dream and being able to start anew, as if meeting for the first time. This might hint that YaoLiu will meet again in Qingshui Town, and the reunion will feel like the first time they met. Perhaps YaoLiu can finally have a new beginning after all the trials and heartache they encountered in Lost You Forever.
Xiao Yao’s clinic in Qingshui Town is named Huichun Tang (回春堂), which is translated in the drama as Rejuvenation Hall. However the words “回春 - huichun” can also mean "to bring back to life" or "return of spring." Season 2, Episode 22 showed Xiao Yao and Xiang Liu parting ways in the spring, when peach blossoms were in full bloom on the trees.
The poem “First Encounter,” which may have inspired the name for Qingshui Town, appears as the first poem in volume two of Xi Murong’s poetry anthology Youth Without Regret (无怨的青春). The last poem in volume two is “Question” (疑问). Here is an excerpt from the poem:
年轻时 如羞涩的蓓蕾
In youth, like a shy bud
无法启口
Unable to speak
等花满枝丫
When flowers filled the branches
却又别离
We parted ways
而今夜相见
And now, meeting tonight
却又碍着你我的白发
We are hindered by our white hair
The two people in the poem parted ways in their youth when the flowers were in bloom on the trees in the spring and met again many years later. This could be another hint at YaoLiu’s eventual reunion in Qingshui Town after Xiang Liu's revival (回春). Perhaps, when the flowers are again in full bloom in the spring, it will mark a "return of spring" (回春) for YaoLiu.
The last episode of the drama is not the true ending for the characters. Tong Hua alluded to the ending of the novel not being the final ending for the characters in several Q&As upon the release of the novel.

Tong Hua: I don't know... I also hope that he is alive, and that they can meet again in the world years later.
Although Tong Hua was talking about her hopes for a reunion for the characters in "Song in the Clouds," I would bet she feels the same way about a YaoLiu reunion--especially since she gave this response in a Q&A about "Lost You Forever."

"Long-term struggle" means the story continues after the end of the novel.
桐华tonghua: 用这个问题作为开场吧, 其实, 每个故事的结束都并不是那些人物的真正的结局, 在这个问题上, 我是个很不切实际的 人, 我总觉得故事只是他们生命的一个段落, 即使我的故事结束了, 他们的生活依旧在另外一个空间继续, 所以, 每个故事都不可能有真正的结局的。
Tong Hua: Let's start with this question. In fact, the conclusion of every story is not the real ending for those characters. On this matter, I am quite unrealistic. I always feel that the story is just a chapter in their lives. Even though my story has ended, their lives continue in another space, so, it’s not possible for every story to have a true ending.
This is Tong Hua's most direct clue that the ending in the novel is not the true ending.
Xiang Liu is hinted to be the leader of the Guifang clan, who has the ability to bring people back to life. In Season 1, Episode 13, when Xiang Liu commissioned Xiao Yao's bow and arrows, he flashed the token of the leader of the Guifang clan. The emblem of the Guifang clan is a two-headed snake with an octopus on top. People naturally associate snakes with the nine-headed snake demon, Xiang Liu. Additionally, octopuses have nine brains, just like our beloved nine-headed demon, and three hearts, which represent the three lives Xiang Liu sacrificed to save Xiao Yao. Xiang Liu's association with the Guifang clan could set the context for his resurrection.
The drama production team released videos of each of the four male leads writing letters to Xiao Yao that hint at each of their eventual fates. You can find them by looking for the respective Chinese terms:
Feng Long's Letter - 特辑回顾：丰隆写给小夭
Cang Xuan's Letter - 特辑回顾：玱玹写给小夭
Jing's Letter - 特辑回顾：璟写给小夭
Xiang Liu's letter - 特辑回顾：相柳写给小夭
Let's analyze the four letters to Xiao Yao that the drama production team released together. Cang Xuan and Xiang Liu’s clothing and settings are a mix of ancient and modern styles, hinting that they survived into modern times. In contrast, Feng Long and Jing wrote their letters while wearing ancient-style clothing, which does not bode well for their longevity. We all know that Feng Long died at Xiang Liu’s hand. Jing most likely significantly shortened his lifespan by using the Lamp of Time to find out the truth about the night he spent with Fangfeng Yiying.
Feng Long’s letter contains a scene where Xiao Yao is smiling at Jing while playing the qin and wearing her Red Thread of Fate (姻緣紅線) robe, the YaoLiu couple’s outfit. Tushan Jing’s letter contains a scene where he says, “but you saw me,” flashing back to when Xiao Yao saw Fangfeng Bei for the first time. Cang Xuan’s letter includes a scene with Xiang Liu aiming his arrow at him and Xiao Yao protecting him. So, Feng Long, Cang Xuan, and Jing’s letters all contain scenes involving Xiang Liu. Meanwhile, Xiang Liu’s letter is the only one that doesn’t involve the other men in the drama. Even when he says he will give Xiao Yao someone to rely on, the scenes are only of him and Xiao Yao, with no Tushan Jing. The implication is that Xiang Liu is Xiao Yao’s true love, and he will eventually be the person Xiao Yao can rely on.
Also, note the use of thunder and candles in the letters. Cang Xuan’s letter does not feature candles, but we hear thunder when he learns that his father died in battle. Feng Long blows out a cand1e in the middle of his letter, accompanied by ominous thunder, signifying his death in the drama. There is an unlit cand1e to Jing’s left on his desk, and thunder is heard right after Xiao Yao sees Fangfeng Bei for the first time. The unlit cand1e and thunder hint at Jing’s limited lifespan. Jing marries Xiao Yao at the end of the drama but will not be able to accompany her for the entirety of her life. Xiang Liu’s letter also features thunder because he dies in battle, but the cand1e on his desk remains burning at the end, hinting at a rebirth or revival of some sort.
Near the end of Xiang Liu’s letter, Xiao Yao says, “It’s okay, take me out to play next time,” then calls out his name. At the end of Jing's letter, she casually calls "Shiqi," but notice she doesn't say "Jing," and her tone is not filled with heartfelt yearning as when she calls Xiang Liu's name. This suggests that Xiang Liu is the one Xiao Yao loves and yearns for most in her heart and that there will be a next time for YaoLiu. Taken as a whole, the implication of these letters is clear: Xiang Liu will be reborn and will eventually be able to be with Xiao Yao.

Hmmm... interesting idea that Xiao Yao's mother won't like Tushan Jing as much as Xiang Liu... maybe she realised that a free spirit like Xiao Yao would be happier with Xiang Liu and because of how much he is like Chi Chen.

Xiao Yao responded, "He is the only one who will never abandon me no matter what happens." To this, A Heng could only laugh bitterly, knowing that Xiao Yao's abandonment issues stemmed from her own choice to go to war and leave her daughter behind. A Heng immediately knew that Xiao Yao didn't have romantic love for Jing. As a former witch doctor at Bai Li, she must have been familiar with the Poisonous Lovers' Bugs and could sense that Xiao Yao had a Poisonous Lovers' Bug in her body while Jing did not, just like the witch king could in the novel. Also, like you said, Xiao Yao's mother had observed Jing's subservient behavior and knew her daughter well enough to know that he couldn't possibly be the man she loved.
Surprisingly the drama makes it even more clear that A Heng and Chi Chen both support Xiang Liu. In Season 2, Episode 15, Xiang Liu visits Chi Chen and A Heng’s former residence to find a way to break the lovers’ bug connection. During his visit, he sees the painting of Chi Chen and A Heng transform into a depiction of him and Xiao Yao holding hands. This transformation is not the result of Xiang Liu’s imagination or spiritual power. Instead, it is triggered by the peach branch in the painting, a manifestation of Chi Chen and A Heng’s wish to see Xiao Yao marry and have children. Note that the branch first appeared in the painting after a peach petal flew into the painting when A Heng's consciousness dispersed. Peach petals represent Chi Chen's spiritual power. The spiritual power sealed in the painting may have activated because it sensed the lovers’ bug inside Xiang Liu, recognizing him as Xiao Yao's true love. Just as the peach petals restoring the Rejuvenating Flower signifies Xiao Yao’s parents' support for her, the transformation of the painting signifies their blessing of YaoLiu's union and their recognition of Xiang Liu as their son-in-law.
In turn, Xiang Liu lights incense and bows to honor A Heng and Chi Chen, because he is their true son in law. We had previously seen Jing standing to the side while Xiao Yao and Cang Xuan honored Xiao Yao's parents. Obviously, the peach branch didn't activate at that time.
