It was a beautiful culture back then. Poverty erases an awful lot of the silliness of society we see today. And you're right Mr Donnie, color didnt matter back in the mountains. We were all just as poor as the next family up the holler scrapping for something to put on the table. Thank you sir for preserving yet another part of our nations bygone history.

I consider it one of my greatest blessings to be raised in the Bible Belt. Growing up in a little country church made me the person I am today. Sometimes I sit and think about all the members of that church that have passed on. I know they prayed for me from the time I was small until they left us. I am so very thankful for each prayer they said for me. I am thankful for the example they set...the things they taught me...but most of all for the love shown to me. Thanks for sharing this Donnie. It has touched my heart more than you could know. God bless.

I grew up in such a church as these. It was built in the 1850’s and torn down in the early 2000’s to make room for a new bigger brick church. I still have pictures and great memories of this church building.

Hi Celebrating Appalachia , Hi Donnie Laws
Both of y’all great channels, a great blessing to many. I am from Texas. I am 44 years old, single, and don’t have family in East TN. A few years ago, before Covid, I was struggling bigtime and decided to take a couple journeys driving to TN. I ended up near Newport TN and couldn’t believe the beauty on I40 between Hartford, TN and Asheville, NC. This may sound like a ridiculous question but I really would like to move out there, but the Appalachian area seems so hard to break into socially unless you have an already built in place family living in that area. People are so nice but family is everything. Is there any tips to recommend where might be the best place to try to move anywhere Knoxville or East of Knoxville. If you were in my position, what would you do?

My son was baptized in the river near an old Methodist church in 2004 I believe it was. Right before he went in the Marines and went to Afghanistan. The whole congregation came down to the river even though most of them didn’t even know him.

Donnie: when I was a teen in the 60s my parents used to farm me out to my Grandad's ranch in Central Texas. While there I took a opportunity to make a little money bucking hay with a team in our county for the local ranchers.. All the rest of the team were black. We worked together, ate together, and one Sunday, I went to a Black Baptist church with the guys. That was an EXPERIENCE as a kid I will tell you. They were far more outgoing then what I was used to and all seemed to sing and dance. I was accepted and had some fine fine cooking after Church too. Hard hard work, but I made some good friends. Our society now is scared and shamed to even speak of baptism. Its Gods own words and instructions all we got too do is obey is commands and do what he tells us to do and have faith. Baptism is a burial cleansing of one’s sins. My God bless you for being a brave solider in Christ.

Oh if the walls could talk, people got saved, they raised their hands in praise of our God and Jesus our Savior. There were happy tears and sad ones, babies born, funerals. Where I live there is a small old church where people have moved on, but memories are gently placed throughout and when we get to Glory we'll have some wonderful conversations.

Oh, Donnie, this one really speaks to the heart. I loved going to church and was baptized in the cold free-flowing waters of the Holston River. I'd like to return to those days when we loved our neighbors no matter what color they were; we respected other people's property, obeyed our parents; practiced our Christian faith and loved our country. God made America great. Bless you for this message.

This one sure hit home Donnie! I was 8 years old when they baptized my Mom and Dad together about two miles from where I live here in southern WV. There's a color picture of it somewhere. You can't count the crowd in that picture! My Mom's dad had been under conviction but was fighting it. You can see him squatted on the creek bank like the old men used to do. He was in a car hit by a train a few months later! There were three of them killed. We never know! Great video!

What a lovely and loving video! Brought back so many memories. My paternal grandparents' church near Duffield VA didn't have a regular preacher, one came about every six weeks and would always eat Sunday dinner with us afterwards. Other Sundays they just had Sunday School. My Aunt June always taught the kids. At the end all would sing hymns together and one by one stand and recite a bible verse. Little ones would each say "Jesus wept" - the Bible's shortest verse.
My maternal Grandfather donated land across the road for their church and helped buIld it.
Both of these churches still stand today.

The singers were the likes of The Statler Brothers., The Oak Ridge Boys, The Jordanaires and Gold City. All of the best would come and sing all day. The food galore outside under the big trees. Man what a time. I miss that so very much. Where did that go? What happened to those kind if fellowships?

Loved this very special video, and wept, especially at the end. I belong to an old country church that had 2 front doors until 1947, and nobody seems to remember why, but you have shed the light on this old tradition! We are Cumberland Presbyterian and sit in families nowadays. And we had a cross that said Jesus Saves on one side, and Get Right with God on the other, and a big tent revival. But it went the way of everything, as well as our 170 year old pine trees that were threatening to fall on the church house that is almost that old. I was a pall bearer for a neighbor from Speedwell, and had to help fill in his grave out there. The graves were all aligned to face east, which made them off-angle to the roadways. I thought that was strange until I asked the preacher. As a child I watched my Daddy and Grampa baptize people in the river, and also watched years later as their caskets were carried to the cemetery, not too many years apart. I was saved when I was 8 but they made me wait until I was 12 to be baptized. I wish that more people would realize how important that the Lord and the Church are to the very fabric of our beloved country. I am sending this video to my family members. It may be the best of all of your videos.
