Saw them live at the Royal Albert Hall in 94. The sun was out & hot, they had released Carnival of Light and you could still smoke in venues back then. Mildly drunk, very stoned, it will always be a memory I will always cherish.
It is a great album but Ride themselves don't seem to like it, probably because it was a low point for them in their time as a band. The album itself though is gold.
Critics were expecting this to be a follow-up to "Going Blank Again" and instead Ride made more of a departure from the more "Shoegaze" sound and made a straight up rock record instead. Sometimes disappointing the critics is the best way to go.
I read a review of this album in publication for marijuana enthusiasts when I was in high school, and went out an bought it the next day- Super track! I love the sitar, Hammond organ (played by John Lord, I believe) and the spacey, psychedelic feel on this track- "From Time to Time" and "Birdman" are also great tracks from this album.
Loz Colbert (The drummer) was getting so good that they had to find a way of calming him down. Because he was dominating the songs so much. That's the real reason RIDE changed style
For real!! He was a monster that I compare to Keith Moon of the WHO. But unfortunately this was a battle between Mark and Andy for more control of writing. I interviewed both of them when I was a DJ at KUCR in 95 and both of them eluded to the same thing. Especially when I was with Andy and Ida at the Stone Roses concert on May 25th at the Hollywood Palladium up on the balcony where we talked about it more. But nice try on the fake news!!!!!
i remember eagerly awaiting snippets of the new ride album on australian independent radio and struggling to make sense of it. looking back, i'm sure i was expecting GBA+, and couldn't handle such a massive shift, but years and years make the difference, and this whole album is close to perfect.
Ride were the nuts, still are, always will be. This track is genius, like most of their stuff. We could all write NME inspired Manchester scene borne reviews, but why? Don't compare them to anyone else, they were unique, and stood head and shoulders above the shoe-gazing try-hards. Just enjoy it! Saw them at a secret fan club gig at the ULU in '91 and they were brilliant, as always! Ride on ;)
This album has some great tracks, nowhere near as bad as I was expecting. Maybe because it wasn't another shoegazer record and has a more retro 60s sound
I always found it strange that this was often considered a lesser album by the band's standards, and also the musicians themselves apparently were not really happy with it. Looking back, to me this seems a very consistent, very listenable achievement that stylistically draws on eminent influences like the US Westcoast sound of the late 60s, (Byrds et al.), and still shows what merits the band has of its own right. I keep returning to it quite often and think it does not have to fear any comparisons to other albums Ride has come up with.
After 2 landmark Shoegaze albums (and boy, do they still stand up today) I remember enjoying the open windows, fresh air and Byrdsian jangle of "Carnival.." at the time. Still do, very much. Re the critics at the time...guess you can't win. Shoegaze was a critical punch bag as hacks were graduating from grunge to Britpop and then they have a pop at Ride for moving away from...Shoegaze. Go Figure.
I actually preferred this album to some of there previous work as I enjoyed more than 2 songs.I thought they matured, still shoegazing music just with a bit more attitude.I saw them with the charlatans at brighton daytripper gig and that was the only time as wasnt a great fan until this album.its a taste thing.
capristuntman man that's a bit worrying - only two songs from each of their previous albums matched your standard!? I'd say you'd be lucky if there were two songs not to like from their entire catalogue!
Dude, handle your own self, commenting repeatedly all over this video how much you hate the album… Good for you, the rest of us don’t! Get a better hobby
I excitedly bought this upon release and I remember being disappointed (just as I had been with the Stone Roses bloated second album). Perhaps I should be happy that The La's only released one album..

Can't understand the critisism of this album. This is pure genius.
Agree - totally underrated album
Eli Braden it my favorite by them
Best band of all time, Ride
It is a great album but Ride themselves don't seem to like it, probably because it was a low point for them in their time as a band. The album itself though is gold.
Seriously I love this album. Especially Mark’s “side”

moonlight medicine keeps me alive, dont let your senses be denied, best changes of any psychedelic jam
Love this track. So many memories. Glad the boys are back for one more go. One of my favorite albums from a great year in music.

yeah 'high' school
This is my favorite band to get high on weed to.
Thank you for sharing this album! ^_^
This is amazing despite what the "critics" claim.
I agree, amazing album. But I'd put GBA above it.
this song particularly was pure genius,
except they forgot to include that genius in the rest of the trash album
Loz Colbert (The drummer) was getting so good that they had to find a way of calming him down. Because he was dominating the songs so much. That's the real reason RIDE changed style
Is that why they put him at the front in the cover photo, too? 😛
@@RootoFrance That was to get away from the fact that they stifled his rising power 😆

It is very weird you said that. Loz is one of the best drummers ever.
And this album was panned by critics? Sounds great to me. I'm ordering one now!

your comment feels like a lost world
Just saw this. My ears are still ringing from the Ride / Heart Throbs concert in '88 or '89.
+Kai Ponte wow! two great bands. must have been a very cool gig!
It's a great album. The Gardiner stuff is the best. This and 1000 Miles
fucking beautiful , I don’t think anyone else has gone this far back emotionally speaking…
Great Alternative Indie British rock album of the nineties!
Great album! Very interesting,and eclectic.
Sitar is awesome at the start of the album.
Masterpiece
Yes sir. It is.
Agree ,i love it !!!!!❤

simon bradwell
word.
@@simonbradwell9506 and as you get older you realise how overrated and basic a particular Creation band really was: Oasis

Always so fucking cool, of course they took a right turn after GBA, as well they should have. Amazing band that can never be matched.
Critics panned this album, and so the band themselves. But I like this song and I don't give a damn to the critics for now.
Astounding guitar solo + THICK Hammond @ 4.10 >> (Listen at full pelt / break a sweat)

holy shit, an actual Jon Lord on organs here
Hipnotic!
Love

This Ride song is the bastard child of Stone Roses and Oasis if Oasis only ever listened to Velvet Underground
This one song was absolute genius. The entire rest of that album was horseshit. Handle yourself now
