Allan Holdsworth was shear genius on guitar. His phrasing and sound were incredible. A true virtuoso. Holdsworth and Ponty playing together was Godlike.

In a month (4/15), it would be 5 years since Allan left us and joined his next band this time in heaven! I met his twice at Yoshi', Oakland, CA. He was setting up his gears before the show. When I said hello to the master shyly, he replied kindly 'oh hello!' with BIG SMILE AND HIS BIG EYES! I saw Mr. Ponty too at the same place. Wonderful show! My favorite collaboration of them is Nostalgia (Individual Choice). Thank you masters for wonderful music and sweet memories!

JLP helped introduce Allan to the world in 1977 with 'Enigmatic Ocean', still a jazz fusion masterpiece. That was after Allan's 'Velvet Darkness' album which went largely un-noticed but before he played with UK or Bill Bruford. As Steve Vai once said, people will still be talking about Allan Holdsworth 100 years from now, he was that good. Rest in peace.

I think he'd already been well introduced to the world by 1977. By then he'd played with Nucleus, Soft Machine, Tony William's Lifetime and Pierre Moerlen's Gong. His contribution to all them was exemplary, particularly Soft Machine's Bundles. Most, if not all of them, are on UA-cam.

It's certainly a GREAT Allan solo! I love the entire track so much.
It's very pop, but check out Allan's two solos here... not a well known track I think.. I love hearing Allan out of his normal context: ua-cam.com/video/27kYosWNs-8/v-deo.html

I saw both Jean-Luc and Allan live many, many times, and was fortunate to have met both in person. Wish I could have seen them play together! I actually got to ask Jean-Luc if he would ever again collaborate with Allan, and he wasn't sure it would ever happen since he was living back in France by then. Allan passed away in my city, not far from where I live, so it hit even harder for us locally. Both provided sound tracks to my life...some of the greatest music in my world.

Mr Pastman - you yourself are a musical genius! Capable of catching lightning in a bottle - I've seen it! As for Allan - this may be one of his best solo's. There are at least 8-9 that make me listen 12 times each time listen - this is one of those. Honestly - this makes me sob. How could any human assemble this fluidity? It is true wizardry. So grateful JLP utilized him - as he sounds at his best with him - imho.

That's just your taste. I used to work with a hard-rock/goth guitar player that called John Abercrombie's great track "Timeless" from the early 1970's exactly that: 'elevator music' & all Pat Metheny Group recordings 'the worst kind of elevator muzak.'
Ben Monder's "Oceana" album is a great one but very few people who don't appreciate the Allan Holdsworth of "Enigmatic Ocean" or "I.O.U." at the very least, are likely to even last for 10 minutes listening to something as adventurous as Monder.
